I'm holding off on playing the Beta to keep things new for me.
I'm trying to decide my main class, and I'm interested in the Necromancer. Of coarse I've read up on every class but I would like to see what players think about them.
Under / Over powered ?
Fun ?
Complicated ?
My back up may be a Thief, as I played a Rogue class in many mmo's. In what I'm seeing in some Youtube videos, streaming web sites and what people are saying they are underpowered, at least for now,........What do you think ?
Comments
All classes are overpowered in the hands of a great player
All classes are fun to play
All classes are easy to access but complicated under the hood
If you like the necro theme, play it, only downside is that the story will probably never give you that feeling of being an evil basterd.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Necromancer was my 4th option so I chose it for the betas so it wouldn't ruin anything for me when the game is released. But now, I fell in love with it so much I'll probably make it my main.
Necros were a bit overpowered in the 1st beta, the life force bar filled up too fast, axes were too bad ass and minions had 60% more HP than they have now. Now some stuff has been nerfed and the weapons have been readjusted, they all feel equally powerful now (except for daggers). Which is good, it gives you a lot of variety, makes you feel like playing all weapon types.
Also, I don't see thieves as underpowered. Ok, they're squishy as ----, but man, do they crit. Definitely the highest damage per hit on the game, I have no idea why people are complaining. As a thief you just have to have a different mentality, they don't have that much variety in playstyle like the elementalist does, for example. Eles can tank or heal or support or whatever, depending on what you wanna do, and thieves are more one dimensional, people need to get used to that. But in the end, they're just as good.
Anyways, necros are great for soloing because you can let the pets tank, great in dungeons because you can play around with conditions (stuns, dazes, poisons, cripples) and they have one of the best class mechanics, the death shroud.
Warrior greatsword is the only is OP right now. dont bother with class are UP or OP because arenanet will correct that, just pick the class you like most.
IMO Necro is very fun to play
If you play a staff minion master it's safe to say that it's going to be kind of boring.
In PvE you simply focus on keeping your minion wall up, doing whatever meager damage you can do, and applying weakness. If you sacrifice damage for support you can offer amazing healing to top it all off. The cookie cutter build for most PvE Necros.
Necro is absolutely fun class to play with forget the overpowered or underpowered thing.
Already at level 7 I was able to unlock well of healing and traits to raise minions
I found the PVE content hard to play but that has nothing to do with Necro I had tought time with every other class
If I dont roll a warrior it will be definetly a necro .....
agree...Minion Master build is boring.
in mi first beta yeh ican say necro was OP but it fix already but in while i get boring doing the same ,for me the best combination was Axe + staff , DS is good tho but it feel kinda meh some skill need changes in DS ,in mi 2 i play ele and i love it it have lot of options and combination to make and basically he can use all weap in game by conjure it ,the ele GS elite is ob do ton of dmg and really was fun.
Great everyone,
I was beginning to think Necros are not much fun, as I was not seeing any player reports about them.
So Thanks
No class is complicated. Necromancer is pretty versatile and in regards to PvE/PvP I would say high ranked among many.
Although their burst damage isn't anywhere close to the Thief's or the Elementalist's, Necromancers more than make up for this through their high Vitality and support and control skills. Things such as the Staff's AoE Chills and Fears are really powerful in both PvE and PvP and the Death Shroud provides amazing survability, potentially high damage output and other very useful tools.
Minions are a little on the weak side and having remarkably low health they aren't really long term pets, maybe useful for a regular mob fight or two before being sacrificed (Well of Healing, Mark of Blood and the traited Life Transfer can work wonders to improve their lifespan though). They do have some useful tools such as blinds, snares and aoe damage but nothing remarkably strong. Applying Vulnerability to foes as a Minion Master will really improve your damage output as well.
Another great thing about the Necro is how versatile it is, although this shouldn't be a surprise considering we are talking about GW2. You can be an offensive, defensive, supportive, long ranged or even short range character.
I'd say Necromancer is a good choice. They can reliably perform a variety of roles and offer a great soloing experience. I personally enjoyed using the staff and daggers the most. Of course having minions is fun, but I really enjoyed playing them in a support capacity.
With regards to their power, I've always believed necromancers were a dev favorite. You can tell a lot of thought went into their design and the utility exhibited reflects that dedication. They can solo wonderfully, they can support the group and they otherwise decimate foes.
In terms of fun - absolutely a blast. The death shroud mechanic is really fun when you are in a heated battle against multiple opponents and also assists in getting out of tight spots.
In terms of complexity - I can answer that in a few ways. Are they accessible? Yes. I didn't find them having a large learning curve and could easily pick one up without much thought. Of course you learn a class as you play it, this being no exception. Is the class deep? I absolutely believe so. They are flexible enough to adapt to many situations but cohesive enough that their theme/feel is not compromised.
I found Necros a bit underwhelming in the last BWE.
Axes are still the best overall choice, due to Vulnerability stacking and decent cooldowns. I have yet to play extensively Staff in PVP, but I feel it's not bad, but hardly great.
My bigest pet peeve was the absolute inviability and unsatisfying feeling of Dagger builds. The damage is too low for such a close range weapong, life taps provide negligible healing (even with 30 points in Blood), and the lack of the fun effect. I was trying to build a Life Tapping build, and all my attempts failed miserably. The difference between Dagger and any other main weapon is unbelievable.
The Necro Blood Pit Heal is amazing. One of the best healing powers for PVP and PVE.
Support skills are also largely underwhelming. Wells are interesting in paper, but not so much in practice. Minions is a playstyle that doesn't attract me, so I skipped them, mostly. I did use the Worm in PvP, and it is quite useful, if you use it correctly. The single greatest Support power is the Grasping Hand pull. Pulling defenders from battlements right into an aggressive mob is priceless, and also quite useful. It is also one of the few interrupts the Necro has.
Elites: Flesh Golem underperforms. It is easily killed, and it tends to act stupidly, even when directed to attack someone in particular. Lich is ok, and Poison Cloud is amazing. Easily the best Elite skill for the Necro, and disastrous for the enemy team is used in the right spot.
Summing up, the class has potential, but it is in a strange spot, right now. It is highly dependent on a few Conditions (Bleeding, Vulnerability), provides VERY little hard CC/Interrupts, but has a few great powers. I just wish we had more viable options to choose from, because the class as a whole seems very biased towards some 4 different skill and trait sets.
I trust Anet will make some QoL changes to make the class 'feel' better. Let's see what happens.
we have Putrid Mark, one of best skill on game for support and have low CD.
agree wells arent so good, well of power is amazing but the rest is just mehh
I'd say Necro is either balanced or slightly overpowered. That's a good Necro though. I've seen a lot of terrible players try to play the class.
I know a lot of people will tell you every class is overpowered in the right hands, which is partially true, but those people don't really understand the concept of Tier lists and balance from a competitive gaming standpoint. Sure anyone can win with underpowered characters like Dan (Street Fighter) or Evelynn (League of Legends), but when doing comparisons via things like tier lists or whether X class is underpowered or overpowered you want to assume everyone is playing at the maximum possible effectiveness with the character. Right now Mesmer and Thief are clearly underpowered (in terms of competitive PvP), while Ranger and Guardian are clearly above the rest in terms of an effective kit. Necro is somewhere below those two, though I'm not quite sure where to put them yet when you compare them to the Warrior and Elementalist. They have one of the most essential skill sets (boon removal) along with very high survivability and CC which is great for competitive PvP.
I tried both necro and sorc, i admit till lvl 30 because i didn't get to powerlevel that much. Out of the two, based on skills, i personally felt more "connected" to the necro....even tho the sorc has very big "in your face" damage output.
Why should it force you onto an evil path? Necromancer is a mage who specializes in death, as much as a monk specializes in light, there is nothing inherently evil in that.
I dont see this working since the minions get breathed on and fall over then you have to wait to resummon. That said I hope they fix minions and ranger pets but the becro is fun. I played one to 17 to get an understanding of the prof to help my mom. I LOVED dual daggers.. so friggin fun and coupled with the staff I handled most PVE situations including some pretty hairy invasion events.
I have yet found a class I didnt like. Necro was the last one I tryed out, and they will be the 6th class I make (I will have all 8 classes eventualy!).
As for the Thief.. I love playing rogues, and once you get the hang of it, the thief is hella fun. It also helps that I have a video of my fighting a boss and at the end I get a 2030 crit. Loves me some big numbers!
I was going to answer, but then I realized I am talking to someone with no reading skills who lunges at people online for little reason.
All I know is if you want to turn into a badass lich, this is class is for you
Pretty fun class from my experience in BWE2, though it might not be the best class for me personally.
Every build sort of revolves around an indirect way to damage your enemies, by which I mean that you don't just cast a big nuke like an elementalist would do.
I used a bleed build for example, where you could stack massive amounts of debuffs on your enemies and watch a huge number of small numbers pop up on your screen. This was very useful in PvP as you could apply your DoT's and then go out of LoS until your enemy died. The problem was that it took a while for you to apply your initial effects. Weapons for this were the scepter and warhorn.
In PvE, I mostly used a dagger build, this revolved around certain debuffs as well as leeching health from your enemy, making you pretty damn hard to kill.
There are also possibilities for support builds, with the conditions you spread healing your allies or dispelling all kinds of debuffs on allies.
The class also heavily depended on the use of Death Shroud: you build up life force through certain attacks, which adds up in a green bar above your healthbar. Triggering it gives you a new set of abilities and the "green bar" effectively serves as a second healthbar, this form is very powerful. Certain builds depend more heavily upon the use of Death Shroud and aid you in gathering life force as quickly as personally.
I personally didn't like the necromancer pet builds, necro pets in general seemed weak and uninteresting (you have no direct control over them).
So basically, if debuffs and dots are your thing, this is most definitely something for you.

Just try it next Beta. How can you think it isnt much fun? from a few answers? Everyone have favorites and dont like professions. Good Luck
I tried it the BWE 2 as my last build and I was most intrigued. At first it was a bit difficult to get a hold of but once I understood the Death Shroud, bleeds and such I began to look at this class in a whole new light, darkness.
I always like ranged hunter/ranger type buils in MMO's but this one has me thinking hard. The fact that you can be bad as in PvP and very good at support with being hard to kill, its a win, win, win!
When they have another BWE I would take your time in understanding each build for this profession. It may at first seem like you are dying in PVE but its all about understand how each of the skills work wtih one another. So don't just play for 3-4 levels to decide.
I'm really like the Necro!
