Originally posted by fansede IF GW is so bad, why is the number #1 MMORPG on this web site for so long?
Because it was the flavor of the month. After people played it for a couple of weeks they realized what the game is and no longer play it. It's like a FPS...super fun for the first couple of weeks then the lack of depth and content gets the better of you then boredom sets in.
But back on topic.
My vote is for EQ1. Why you grouped EQ1 and 2 together is beyond me. they are completely different games...and why do ppl that make these lists always make the same 2 mistakes:
1. They put games on the list that aren't even out yet.
2. They always forget the grandpappy of modern MMORPGs, Ultima Online!

Doesn't the top 7 already make this "poll" null and void...not to mentioned the OP posted games that are still in early beta.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
Best purely for crafting: Horizons. Overall best: Asheron's Call 1.
The things that are available in these two games that others don't even attempt put them vastly above those others -- aka, Horizons lets you build physically in the gameworld things like houses and bridges and such and encourages cooperation with others in that things get built quicker and with more variety with players working together. Item creation isn't just one or two materials plus the needed place to combine -- there are a wide variety of materials, plus the ability to dye/color items, plus the use of "techniques" that can be as simply as adding bonuses to something or more complicated. AC1 had actual world events that changed the game world - burned down villages, changed geography, deep story/lore that unfold and are affected by player actions, etc. AC1 had the ability to scavenge, breaking down items for their component materials and then applying those materials to items to improve them.
Games like WoW don't even attempt things like these -- and are lesser because of that. Those "things" listed above are the ingredients of story, immersion, and a non-static gameworld. "Things" that should be the first thing considered when building an MMORPG.

No, World of Warcraft is the most played. followed by Lineage 2 and 1.
Best does not necessarly mean total number of players to everyone.
Quite honestly while L2 and WoW may have alot of player's, from a best game overall perspective I rate them at the very bottom of my list.
To me the overall best was UO, simply because it was the original "BiG" mmorpg..sure meridian 59 was the first but it was not big. UO allowed players a freedom never before seen, and really honestly still to this day Rarly seen in a game. It had its faults, but I challenge anyone to name a perfect game.

Saying that WoW or Guild Wars is the best mmo ever only shows one thing to me. That whoever says such complete garbage is nothing but a sheep who mindlessly follows others ranting about things they don't even know anything about. It's actually quite hilarious really.
Guild Wars, WoW, and EQ2 may have the graphical edge, but they don't even come anywhere close to the depth of Ultima Online, Asherons Call (1), and EQ1. If all you want it friggin pretty graphics in your mmos then forget EQ2, WoW and especially the total piece of garbage, Guild Wars. If seeing pretty graphics is all you care about, and you dont care about a complete lack of quality and immersive gameplay then hell I got a great answer for you... Instead, rent any of the Lord of the Rings movies (which blows WoW, EQ2, and GW outta the war as far as picture quality goes) and play with yourself (your "natural" gamestick) instead. You'll get 10 times the excitement level (atleast), a lot better "picture" to look at while you play, and the fun will end in about the same amount of time as playing these pathetic excuses for mmos.
How could anyone ever play Utima Online (especially pre-Trammel) or Asherons Call and then rate these newer crap games better? It would be about like saying that The Spice girls are more talented and better then Elvis and George Strait. Insanity, stupidity, and/or simply talking out your ass when you dont even know what you are talking about (as in all the tons of losers acting like they've actually played EQ1, UO, or AC and they haven't ever even logged into any of them for 5 minutes)
But as long as people keep mindlessly logging to these mainstream catch-all mmos, the sad thing is the game companies will keep producing this uninspired garbage.
I challenge anyone who says WoW, Guild Wars, Lineage 2, or EQ2 as the best mmo ever to... 1) Stop mindlessly following sheep for just a moment and think for yourself. 2) Actually try playing Asherons Call or Ultima Online (yes even though they are old) 3) Realize that there is a good reason The Spice Girls and Guild Wars come like a flash of light and disappear at about the same speed they rose to the top. And that there is a reason old music like Elvis, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles will still sell albums 100 years from now... and just the same there is a reason that mmo classics still exist today almost a decade after release regardless of their inferior graphics by todays standards. 4) Did I mention stop following the #1 popularity ranking like a mindless sheep and play and think for yourself?
I realize that this post is only "my" opinion. But atleast my opinion comes from many years experience playing and testing many mmos, therefore its based off of actual wisdom and knowledge and not just some lame 8.4 rating by 300,000 mindless sheep who are only rating a game based on how "cool" they think it looks or because others are also giving it a high rating so I better do it too!! Ugh.
My opinion here is worth atleast 100,000 of anyone who rates "Guild Wars" anywhere close to an 8.4 as an mmo. Hehe.
It's sad, but there is much more truth here then blind sheep flocking.
I for one of the masses have a brain and my own personal choice. And I tend to use it... wisely. And that means realizing without much thought and playime in a game like Guild Wars that there is no way in hell this game deserves anywhere close to the 8.4 rating it has or that the money its greedy little company is hoarding in off making "a simple game for simple minds". I guess I can say one thing for NCSoft who made Guild Wars. "KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid" has worked a wonder for them as far as quick profits. Too bad that it will be short lived however, and that long after it's gone and an easily forgettable memory... EQ1, AC1, and UO will all still be burning up many a players nighttime hours.

i havnt tryed WoW recently but i played GW and its worth the mony u read neck racicst cousin bagin trailer trash
I understand oldschool MMO players defending their first loves (UO, EQ, Asheron's Call or what not). And most likely they're right in saying that the older games had more depth and heart. I do think that high graphical standards limit the flexibility of game systems. When devs have to spend 3 hours as opposed to 10 minutes creating a model for an item, chances are they won't be making too many item options, as an example.
That said, I'm not inquisitive enough to pay and play games like AC or EQ that, to me, look like polygons on a stick. I'd rather just accept my place in gaming history and take old-timer's words for it that 'back in the day, things were different'.
I've played a huge number of MMOs but admittedly they're all second-gen MMOs. And that's the basis from which my judgement comes from. It doesn't make me a sheep, it just makes me a second-gen MMO player.
(In conclusion, my vote still goes for Anarchy Online.)
EQ1. Rallos Zek server (open PK) back in the day. When you could loot any worn or carried item. Before PvP spell nerfs. Before equipment stat inflation that came with all the expansions. And ESPECIALLY before all the *&@^! no-drop equipment.
