I can appreciate what ANet is trying to do but the whole "everyone wins cause we're all having fun" mentality sounds like something from Nintendo.
Reminds me of a line from the movie The Incredibles:
"when everyone's super... no one will be." - Syndrome
So when everyone is having fun... no one is having fun? Yea... that totally makes sense.
More like "If I'm not having fun, no one else should be allowed to have fun either!"
It's the pretty standard/basic "someone pissed in MY Cheerios" argument.
People who don't have a game that they enjoy as much as GW2 fans enjoy GW2 are jealous and wishing that a game that fit their ideals was made and just as close to release and popular. Then they too could "win" the internets.
It's sad, and I wish all of them success in finding "their" game but the whole lashing out against GW2 fans thing is getting pretty old... vote with your wallet, shut your mouth, provide positive feedback/suggestion to the games you actually like and support the sub-genre you want to see "your" game created for.
Yet again ArenaNet shows why it is superior to other MMO developers and why GW2 will be the best MMO on market once it goes live, be happy ppl the new age of MMOs is coming, no more EQ/WoW clones !!!!
Bookmarked your post for future reference about how fanatic posters can be.
Be sure to qoute it once GW2 becomes best and most played MMO on the market.

Oh, most certainly not.
As I told the hoard in /r/GuildWars2, get back to me in 6 months. If NCSoft doesn't progressively widen the things available on the cash shop to the point of it being a major issue with the fan base, I'll eat my hat.
With Anet sticking to its philosophies rigidly and the way Anet listens to complaints, I highly doubt they will put up something that will enrage the fan base. Just look what happened to megaphone? It wasn't even a p2w issue and yet it got removed even before the start of the first BWE lols.
You really think Anet will actually put items up that may be the cause of huge controversy only to be removed later which would undoubtedly enrage more people?
Oh and finally, take a look at the items offered in the first game. It was actually kinda worse there because you could buy skill sets from the first game and from its the expansions. With the way skills are operated in GW2, there will not be a need for something like that.
And finally, I hope you won't die eating your hat . I suggest a leather hat just to be on the safer side .
It's a lot of fun watching the hardcore GW2 fans stick their fingers in their ears and scream, "LALALALALALALA!" whenever anyone has something negative to say about this game. It's really okay guys, the game can still be great and have negative aspects (e.g. cash shop).
It's great that GW2 is being developed around what's 'fun', but I agree with a few other posters that it's a subjective concept. I really hope they get it right for a majority of us.
The game is far over hyped and a long way from launch before we can even say it is a great MMO. I think it has a long ways just to be classified as a MMO yet. Right now it is pretty much a advanced GW1 not much of a MMO. Great PvP and the WvW is awesome but there is a lot more to a MMO than that.
What the hell are you talking about now? I soloed 99% of the time in WoW/RIFT/instert bad "MMO" here. I group and participate with other players non-stop in GW2. There seems to be way more interaction in GW2 than most recent MMO's. Then you have PvP and Dungeons which are all about grouping up.
You apparently need to look up what MMO stands for and stop throwing the term around for which you don't understand in the slightest. Massive Multiplayer Online, you are saying a game where you are playing with thousands of others players at the same time, with more player interaction than most other "MMOs", isn't an MMO?

I'm curious how we will know this to be the case? What metric will we use to judge whether or not it is the "most played" mmo on the market?

While you did imply that you believe it will become the best and most played MMO in the market, you also explicitely said that EQ/WOW clones will stop being made and/or cease to exist.
Which is kind of funny as many games that are considered "wow clones" are at least as different as GW2. It's themepark nature (what most people on these boards call wow-clones) are what I like the most.
I think alot of people think the game must be easy in difficulty when they read "everyones having fun", no...its still quite difficult, alone, and with groups, and theres still plenty of things to work for. Rewards are scaled wonderfully, and the more effort you put in the more you receive. Not sure the problem people are seeing here, maybe they're angry because their game couldn't do things right?
I always like the one that goes "GW2 isn't an MMO". You mean it's not a multiplayer gear grind where people avoid each other but instead play with one another? Yeah, doesn't sound like it fits the typical definition, just the actual one.

Now I'm actually curious what it is you're specifically referring to.
Before the launch of every MMO we get an article from the developers about what makes a game successful and how theirs will be different. Then 6 months after launch their game goes F2P because they really had no clue what gamers really want. Sadly I dont really think that most developers actually play MMO's as a hobby. If they did, we would not have all these fricken WoW clones and every game would not be the same thing different day.
Take a look at ToR, 150 million dollars and 6 years to develope and they give us a WoW clone with spoken text. This is the best that the developers at Bioware could come up with spending that much money and having that kind of time. Go back and look at their preview articles and they made all the same statements that everyone else did. "We know what players want", "We are making a dynamic game world", "PvP and end-game content will be a big focus". I honestly do not feel that modern day game developers have a clue. They think logically in code and lack the creativity that developers from 15 years ago had.
I'm looking forward to GW2 and have pre-ordered but I dont buy into all this hype.

So you are predicting that they will allow their cash shop to become so intrusive that it will alienate the fan base, thereby negatively impacting the amount of revenue generated by yearly box sales of expansion content? Or are you predicting that people will be angry about it but continue to fund the game by buying the expansions anyway? And what kind of hat are you referring to?
"Loading screens" are not "instances". Your personal efforts to troll any game will not, in fact, impact the success or failure of said game.
The hype for GW2 is deserved, having played the game in beta twice and trying different areas of it - this game is awesome fun.
I really do think Anet have a great outlook on the way they are making this game and its going to pay off, with bought games BUT more importantly with people actually having a lot of fun playing it - I have already.

its a shame that when you will eat your hat (if ever...) none of us will be here to see it,
we will all be deep in with our necks with gw2 that none of us will bother coming back here anymore...
but hey.... have fun with that hat of yours.

lol I get this image of Colin being the guy at the office that everyone wants to punch in the face.
"Hey guys, howsit goin!" "Oh. Hey, Colin." "Watcha guys workin on, huh?" "Um, just some ncp scripting in one of the Norn villages." "Well guys, just to reiterate; If its not fun, we don't want it in there. So, is it fun?" "Dude, its just some scrip-" "I SAID IS IT FUN!"
*click* boom
I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

I love how people just keep on going that GW2 will revolutionize the MMO genre...
a) we all heard the same "with B2P games P2P will become obsolete!" lines when GW1 was making its "impact"...
and yet, B2P is pretty much non-existant in the MMO field!
b) GW2 is so many games all rolled into one, it's bundles of fun... yeah... if the quality were there to back up the quantity.
Of course, quality (like beauty) rests in the eye of the beholder. This beholder found the offerings rather bleak...
c) fun is all that matters... if that were true, why make people pay for the game? I know, because it's still a business... and that's just where it all falls apart: you can't really measure "fun" in business terms. There is no "well, we spent $50 Mio on that convention trip to Hawaii, but we had tons of fun!", at least not when you want to find yourself in rather shark infested waters.

Fun of one person is not normally relative to fun of another, so your sarcasm's spot on.
But that quote is pretty awesome, lol
Yes, i think i'll quote you.

Looking forward to EQL and EQN.
I never liked that quote, for me it never really made much sense.
This is not a game.
And character bound dyes are ANTI-FUN. So much for that philosophy anet.

Nice work.
From all the discussion on the official forums last BWE, I believe they will be changed to account bound, but don't quote me .
I'm curious how we will know this to be the case? What metric will we use to judge whether or not it is the "most played" mmo on the market?
Then your only source of funding will be Kickstarter.
No. Investors need something more tangible as measure of success than "fun", and since it's their money, they decide.
