Hey,
Alright first off, I'm a person who generally dislikes all instancing in MMO's. But I have learnt to accept and enjoy instanced PvE as long as the game doesn't completely revolve around it.
Anyway, I've got a few questions about TERA.
- Is/will their be seperate "PvE" and "PvP" gear? - And can/will this PvP gear only be obtained by farming PvP instances? - I hate MMOG's set up like this. I know the PvP instances aren't in-game yet, but is this what they have planned?
- Will their be some form of OWPvP with a point? Something to the extent of the fortresses in L2 for guilds to battle to control?
- I've heared about some sort of planned Server vs Server PvP, can anyone elaborate on this?
- As far as the current end-game PvE, I'd like it if the gearing up was sort of a 50/50 mixture of instanced encounters and Open World encounters. Is/will this be the case? Or will TERA be all out instanced?
Basically, I played WoW from release, and in my eyes when they added BGs, it completely ruined the game for me. The world became practically dead, more so every day.
This is the only reason I haven't already bought and playing TERA. I don't want to see an MMO I really enjoy get wrecked by the careless addition of instanced PvP grinds.
If someone could tell me what's what in TERA, that'd be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Battlegrounds usually ruin open world pvp, I think Warhammer showed that.
I want to say I saw a part of an interview indicating that they wanted to tie open world pvp into the vanarch system but I'm not fully clear if that was "ope world" or just "pvp".
time will tell.

Well Tera has a 7 day trial you can play Tera for free for 7 days, lvl up to 23 so you can try it and see how you like it ^_^ I'm on Vally of Titan server hit me up if you ever play =D IGN: Zets or Xen.Zet
Yeah I played in closed beta so I know how the game plays more or less, and I really liked it. But that's the reason I didn't buy it you see... I'm aware it's quite an incomplete game in terms of "end-game" content, and I don't want to be dreaming about how great the game can be only to see them flood it with instanced grinds and watch all the life get sucked right out of the world.
I might take the trial with my buddy and have fun for 7 days, but I won't dare buy the game in fear of what might happen to it later down the line.
Western developers don't understand MMO's at all...
I suppose only time will tell, eh?
EDIT: Is their a trial for the European version?

Errr its made by Eastern developers XD And idk if there is one for European verison. I say wait few month for battle ground to hit and see how it goes from there. There be better PvE content as well so ya wait a few month and see i guess ^_^
Battlegrounds will ruin it tbh, there's really not that much OWPvP to begin with unless you try your best to make it, we get 2-3 large battles a week that go down in my guild and lots of random fights with gankers and whatnot, otherwise there's not really that much.
In my opinion I think the battlegrounds would hold more people than the OWPvP will, it's just too hard to set it up at the moment because gamers just don't want to do anything unless they get shiny rewards for it. People don't play to have fun, they play for rewards now.
The only way we get PvP to happen is by declaring GvG on other guilds and then calling them out about being scrubs and not coming out to fight.
I definitely concur. By the time BGs hit, hopefully enchantment RNG and crafting will also be changed positively. This game will be worth purchasing and subbing for, just not atm.
"As you read these words, a release is seven days or less away or has just happened within the last seven days those are now the only two states youll find the world of Tyria."...Guild Wars 2
Yeah I guess I'll wait till the BGs hit and see what direction they take the game by then.
And no, you have obviously not played a decant MMO. [mod edit]
I mean meaningful PvP that has impact on the entire server, something along the lines of guild territory control, battles consisting of hundreds of players all fighting for something that matters to them. Not grinding instances for crappy rewards in a boring never-ending system of linear progression. This is what todays MMOs have become.
If I wanted instanced PvP I'd play an FPS.
Ugh, I hate MMOs of today, and players with your mentality. Don't know any different I suppose.
Also, rexzshadow.
I heared it was half eastern and half western? I doubt eastern developers would create an MMO with an easy to each "endgame", which consists mainly of instances and release it without any meaningful PvP.
The linear minds of western developers have definitely had some influence here!

Lol, not this again. Of course it will, when doesn t it ever. If anyone says it won t effect OwPvP, they re crazy. The simple fact of the matter is, most people want easy, and instant gratification. Well when BGs come, you can sit and wait for pvp, not look for it. As much as I would rather have big OwPvP battles, most people don t, hence why we have most MMOs the way they are now.
TERA seems to have a lot of likeminded players when it comes to PvP, as in - Prefer OWPvP over instanced crap, probably old UO or Lineage players I assume.
Why aren't they catering to these? Do you think if enough people petitioned for a single server where instanced PvP was completely inaccessable, they'd listen? Do you think enough people would play a server like this? Back when Blizzard first released their instanced PvP and destroyed the world, the forums were flooded with requests like this. They didn't listen though.

You won't find anything more than ganking here. Mhhh Tera was developed by Bluehole.... a korean Studio. I guess you are overestimating eastern developers.
In Korea you even had to give a 5 second warning to a player before you can attack him. The american publisher EME got rid of that limitation and allowed pvp from level 11 (in Korea you can only pvp at cap).
The truth is Tera was developed as PVE focused game.
Because they are catering to the PVErs.
Just because few players were under the (false) impression that Tera would have been a good owpvp game it doesn't mean they have to refocus their game.
No petition will change that.
Battlegrounds will come out at the end of summer and kill the already dying and scarce owpvp.
Oh, this is a real shame. Thanks for the reply though, mate. Appreciate it.
I'll look elsewhere.

There is seperate pve and pvp gear. The pvp gear currently is gotten by running the Nexus at endgame, although I imagine it or something like it will be available by running battegrounds once they're put in.
There is no mention I've ever heard of of server vs. server. This is no OWPVP with a point. The only open world pvp is either ganking or deathmatches set up by groups of players that you can bet on.
If you're hoping for anything like Darkfall (in your avatar) or warhammer's RVR, it's not to be found here. TERA is primarily a PVE themepark, just like WoW and rift and most AAA MMOs.
HOWEVER, the combat is truly unique and there is a free trial running, so there's no harm in giving it a try.
The game itself was created by Eastern developers and yes its really awakard for a Korean mmorpgs but the thing they were headed for when they were making it game is to make it more acceptable to the west. So the game was built very mix if you put would put it. West side also did have input as well but more minor things, EME, the host for NA Tera has have their own small dev team and rights so they do get lot more chances in than most host company.
Maybe there is still hope for opvp with the new planned changes to political system
who would even care if it did kill open world pvp.... TERA open world pvp is a shallow joke. ganking and griefting for little else than to stir up area chat. what a snore.
actuallly the game is so boring that i even started ganking lol... seriously, this game really is shallow and boring. a beautiful looking shallow puddle, especially at endgame. i got it for 50% off in AMazon and had a giftcard for 20$. so TERA cost me 5$ and i still wish i could get back the one month i played lol. people kept telling me it got better as you level up... but no, instances are copy paste boring and crafting is a bottomless pit of pointless.. and the Vanarch system? zero meaning and full of time sink.
i could go into detail but its all been said before. just refer to the 2000 other posts about TERA's mehness.... even the combat isnt that great. freaking awesome animations though... but thats about it.
Like most games, it is what you make of it. Lots of people do GvG and have tons of fun. The combat is a blast in PvP, and I have very little doubt that the battlegrounds will be fun as well.
Definitely won't hurt. The high level zones should be highly contested.
I think the thing Tera needs most is battlegrounds. GvG is fine and all, but with no real reward structure, open world PVP will never attract large crowds the way simple battlegrounds will.
Someone mentioned nexuxes, are these OW or Instanced? Can we PK other players inside there?
Also, I do really like the sound of the upcoming political system changes, but from what I hear the political system is a rather useless time-sink at the minute? And when the BGs are implemented, will the political system revolve around those?
From the sounds of what other members are saying, it probably wouldn't.
Also... Why did a mod edit out my presumption that you were introduced to the genre by WoW based on your interpretation of Open World PvP?
Hmmmm....
