Disturbing increase in usage of "mate"

I have noticed a sharp increase by non Australians, referring to everyone as "mate", especially on these forums.

Why the need to hijack this term from the Aussies?

After listening to Geraldo use the term "mate" over and over again while reporting on Katrina, I can say with certainty, that it is no longer cool to speak this way if you are non Australian.
