average age of mmo player is in early/mid 30s. been this way forever.
just saved you a lot of calculations once your poll is done. no need to thank me.
Well just looking at games like Grand Fantasia and Flyff.. Using cupcakes to heal? I mean how many people in early/mid 30s are gonna be caught dead healing with a cupcake. Just made me wonder if i was getting too "old" for mmorpgs at 22.

Isn't that the truth! I've stopped counting birthdays when I was about 25.
There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own. -- Herman Melville
Seems basically aligned with the studies I've read and maturity I've experienced in WOW; thus far this poll doesn't surprise me.
What does surprise me is that so many people seem surprised by the results. (Well not really...these are the same demographic of gamers who insists WOW is just a bunch of kids, despite so much evidence indicating otherwise.)

Apparently the average age of this forum is 40+ and 20-somethings...
I never realized old people had so much angst!
When you assign 7 age categories with almost half the population in only 2 of those categories you are going to get results that look like they are skewed. As is usual with age polls created by many people in their 20's they don't have a clue.
People my age created these games. Why the fuck would we not play them?

Interesting.. I thought there would be more teens.
kids today want instant gratification and don't want to work to get rewards. MMOs are the anti gratification/reward game. They like FPS, RTS, and MOBAs since games last really no more than 30 min and you get rewarded instantly.

This is a lot like saying "how many people in their 30s are gonna be caught dead watching Toy Story 3." Implying that titties and guns define mature entertainment is perhaps the surest sign of immaturity.

Wrong forum.
Go to mmosite or onrpg and you will have more teens there.
That would not change fact that average age of mmorpg gamer is well above teens and is rising.
I would not be surprised if it is over 30 atm and will be close to 40 in 10 years or so in western societes.
There are many people who started gaming in 90's or even earlier + western societes are GETTING OLD. Like overally. Less and less kids and more people at retirement and this tendency is just getting stronger in most western countries ( also including countries like Japan & SK).

It's common knowledge that most gamers are NES generation (or earlier) at this point. Everyone else is still on an allowance, and that's if they are lucky. Otherwise, they only have b-days and christmas to look forward to new games.
So... why the F**K is everything these days (especially MMOs) aimed at selling to the kid demographic?
Especially seeing as how how the major selling franchises out there are rated M... and it's prolly why TSW has such a rabid calling. It's just about the only one catering to a developed palate.

They aren't bittervets yet. I don't know much about marketting theory, but it was my understanding that it's almost always easier to market a product to a younger, more naive person and if you hook them on your product their loyalty will last longer.

True that.
There is one thing though game companies will have to start to make SOME % of games aimed at diffrent crowd and those 'bittervets'.
Why?
Cause western (+ Japan, Korea, Australia, etc) populations are getting older. Demographic. It is that simple.
There will be less and less young gamers, more 'bittervets' and vet gamers and there is more and more games. Math just don't add up.
Heck even China population is getting older.
Of course on the other hand there is part of Africa, most of middle-east and central Asia + India that have big population growth and young population, and those markets will get more important as time passes.
As those societes will become more 'computerized', internet more spread and more consumers there - there will be game companies and publishers gaining strenght there as well. So that won't really replace all of very widely considered 'west' playerbase getting older.
Games for 'mature audiences' will not be bigger revenue wise overally over games made that can be digested by teenagers as older gamers also play 'silly, kiddie, teenagers, etc' games. I do myself sometimes (althrough more rarely as time pass).
Demand is growing bigger though and those who won't find a way to tap it - will lose big chunk of possible income and market shares.
Change is coming. Those that won't see it - will lose.

Maybe just the average age of forum users?
I read that the average age of a gamer is 36 which also happens to be the average age of the US population.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Yeah i'm 38 this year UO was my 1st mmo.....how time flies and who are all these kids in my house.
This is pretty much right.
Most MMO players might be teens, but those type of casual players aren't as likely to use the forums.
I don't know the statistics, so I could easily be wrong, but I think this poll will likely give an average age higher then reality.

"Grumpy old man waving a cane" is not a stereotype that suddenly switches on at 75.
