Looking for a decent mmorpg

i love mmorpgs but nowadays i just get bombarded with pay per month games. Im looking for a quality mmorpg thats either free, or a one off payment.
I was also wondering if theres a mmorpg (if thats what it is) where you build a city, and cities fight each other across the world map (mmorpg style, though, all cities in sync). my friend told me about something like this but i couldnt remember it.

Have you tried Anarchy Online yet? Doesn't cost a penny for the original game and for being free...it's a good game

Yes anarchy online is the game your friend is talking about. But being limited to the classic game, the most you get to reach is until level 70++ and also the limited of going into battle with aliens in city.
but IMO, anarcy online is a good start for you. Try it, you wont feel regret.

But to the original poster; if you havent played it before give it a try. You have 70 plus levels to obtain, about 4 races to choose from, around 8 or so professions and the quality of the game is very good for being 3 years old. If you like sci-fi you may like it. If you want something other than the traditional mmorpg you may like it. You have nothing to loose. If you hate it, just delete it

true it is free but its definatly not quality. just my call on it fell free to try it and not like it though
jees, so many replies in about 5 minutes.
Ive tried anarchy online, it was really my cup of tea tbh. ive got guild wars but the level 20 cap just ruined it for me. I really wanted star wars galaxies but thats paying per month as well, which i dont like. Has anyone else got any good mmorpgs they could recommend?

Have you tried the free mmorpg sticky yet? There's quite a few on that list. I dont know how good they are though.
