Now that release date is announced, do we know when they will reserve the GW1 names?

    From that FAQ:

Will I be able to reserve character and guild names during the Headstart Access?

Yes, players who have Headstart Access will be able to claim character and guild names that will carry over when Guild Wars 2 goes live. Players who pre-purchase and receive three-day Headstart Access will have an advantage in choosing character and guild names over players who pre-order and receive one-day Headstart Access.
I'm an original Guild Wars player--will I be able to reserve my character name in Guild Wars 2?

Guild Wars players will have an opportunity to secure their character names in Guild Wars 2. We'll have more information about this feature in the future.

This is also interesting for me because I played the original GW, but didn't preorder or purchase.

    The jist of it:

Thus our policy will simply be as follows: to preserve your character name from Guild Wars into Guild Wars 2, you must be an active Guild Wars player (more on that below), and you must create a Guild Wars 2 character with the same name as your Guild Wars character during the Headstart Access period or on launch day.

After launch day (and after we work through support tickets filed on launch day), we’ll free up the millions of unclaimed names for new Guild Wars 2 players to use.

To implement this name reservation system, we need to build a list of the character names of active Guild Wars players that we’ll reserve through launch day. We actually need to build that list a few weeks prior to the launch of Guild Wars 2.
So we’ll use the following very generous definition of active: Guild Wars players will be considered active—thus having their Guild Wars names reserved and available to claim during Headstart Access and on launch day—if they have logged into the game at least once between January 1, 2012 and the day we build the name reservation list.

We’ll warn the community before we build the list, but that’s irrelevant, because there’s no reason for anyone to wait. If you want to reserve character names from Guild Wars into Guild Wars 2, log in to the original game now so we know you’re active!

What Zenon posted, but its already live.  If you have a Guild Wars account, you can log in with your curent characters or make new ones and claim your name now, however that only applies to names with 2 or more words.   Seeing as Guild Wars 2 allows single word names, if one has a character name of John Smith from GW, then that name is already claimed across every GW2 world, but someone can still claim the name John or John Johnson, or John the Destroyer, or you should get the point by now.

If a Guild Wars character name that was claimed is not created as a charcter in GW2 during the head start period, once the worlds go live for everyone Tues, then all names become unclaimed and available!

Indeed. I fail at cut'n'paste. Fixed.
