I don't know how you guys can think this will happen. WoW has proven to be invincible to high-potential games TWICE. Everquest 2 and Guild Wars, both games with ALOT more hype than Vanguard. Vanguard may be better, I dont know, but it definitly will not have the appeal that WoW has grabbed. This will be the 2nd time the MMORPG community will feel disappointment.
Think: Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft were thought to be tied and grab the same amount of hype back in November. Guess which game ended up leaving with fastest selling game of the year award? Rated higher by PC gamer and almost every single other magazine? Not EQ2. Everquest 2 hasnt even had 2 legs to stand on since WoW came out. Guild Wars was a little more successful, but WoW still has more players and WoW is gaining players ALOT faster than Guild Wars.
Considering both Guild Wars and Everquest 2 had ALOT more hype than Vanguard, I dont think Vanguard will even be considered competition. Quit trying to find a game that can beat the unstoppeable game of WoW. Whether it sucks or not, that's your own opinion and has no value to anyone except yourself. However, if you think it sucks, know that 3.5 million subscribers worldwide think that your opinion is wrong too.
i play on australian servers because racism is acceptable there

Dont worry about mmorpgs taking subscribers from WoW.
There are so many subscribers there if some leave you wont really notice the difference. While Vanguard will be new you will still have the loyalists.
And lets say 100,000 people leave....you still have like half a billion left to play with
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
Fanboy starting to feel the pressure?
What does it matter if another game comes out? You play the game that you like. For example, I play EVE Online. I used to play EQ2 and SWG. I tried EQ2 and SWG and I liked it, but I like EVE Online more, so I'm playing that game. Am I going to come on these forums and say how EVE Online rocks and all other games suck and everything? No, that's just stupid and I'd be trolling and whining.
Vanguard will obviously take subscribers away from ALL current MMORPGs, not just WoW. Saying that WoW is 'invincible' with its 3.5 million subscribers is just being an ignorant fanboy. People will play what they like and if they get bored or find something better, they will switch over to that. Currently WoW subscribers find WoW fun but that's no guarantee that it will stay that way.
lol WoW will not be "owned " by any single game but i assure u this the day the 4th gen mmorpgs start being released V:SoH , Hero's Journey , Darkfall , Tabula Rasa and Imperator the days of WoW will be numbered
there is no comparison to WoW and these games listed above
the games listed above are far "better" games , these games begin to break away from the "eq clone" design that so many games including WoW were based on
granted other earlier games have pioneered the way for the 4th gen mmorpgs , notably AC , EvE and SoR
When these games begin to be released the "glory days" of WoW are over and the game will with time die out. WoW is the pinnacle of the 3rd gen of mmorpg no other game of this specific generation holds contention with WoW , well maybe L2
but for now WoW is "living its 15min of fame" but all things come to an end , i for one shall not be sad when this game dies out i would go so far as i "want" this game to die , with good reason this game instead of broadening and expanding the limits of mmorpgs the game designers "sold out" to line their pockets and basically remade EQ
if the following was too long to read , then here is the point to this rant
----------> GAME DESIGNERS WHO MAKE GAMES SPECIFICALLY TO MAKE MONEY ARE THE BLIGHT OF THIS GENRE , IF U CHOOSE TO BUY SUCH RUBBISH THEY CHURN OUT THATS YOUR CHOICE BUT UNDERSTAND THIS , THEY don't CARE , ABOUT YOU THE SUBSCRIBER , THE COMMUNITY OR MOST IMPORTANTLY THE GAME <-----------
so in conclusion if your content to plunk down 12-15$ / month to play a game with the same tired ideas and concepts that previous games had and do little to nothing to add to or improve the genre in general then continue to play the "eq clone" of your choice whether it be WoW , GW (altho it isn't really an mmorpg) , L2, DAoC , or EQ2
however if you actually want to play a unique and different game that doesn't follow the same formulaic concepts of previous games go play AC , EvE or SoR (also darkspace is pretty good aswell but thats just my opinion)
How will it get owned?
WOW is Warcraft and made by Blizzard :S That's why it's popular for the name and brought people in that don't even like game sliek Vangaurd!
People who will play Vangaurd do not like WOW in general so they wont take subs of eachother!
Plus Vangaurd will not be advertised like WOW and none of my RL mates don't even know about it!
Also the EQ devs havn't learnt that them kinda games don't attract many people, and arnt fun.

Don't click here...no2
Was WoW even advertised at all? I see TV ads for FFXI and Everquest 2 banners all over Warcry.
Corse it was : Saw lots over the net!
All in shops over here in the UK!
Everyone talks about the latest Warcraft game!
Peers will advertise it!
All over the news and that
It got advertised without Blizzard having to do much!

Dont forget that probably at least half of WoW subscribers of 3.5 million are new to MMOGs. Alot of them are kiddies, who definitely never played an online game before. Being that vanguard isnt even out yet, you cant really say that WoW is vanguard competition.
Another point, if Vanguard was released tomorrow. It doesnt matter if Vanguard will never "own" WoW. If they are able to get 100,000 or so subscribers from EQ2, WoW and other games that its fine. You also have to remember that WoW is providing a good service for MMOG industry all together. Some of the subscribers, who are mature adults, are new two MMOG and will be looking for other games to play once they get burned out. Vanguard maybe be a place where these people will go. So in a way Vanguard could be nothing more then a lifeboat for people from WoW wanting to leave.
Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online
Why do you even feels the needs to write this?
The best MMORPG is CoH, and it didnt even equal EQ2 subscribtions wise...for now.
WoW will lose it throne eventually, it is inevitable, just like defeating Diablo for good is impossible, he emerge when the body of the last guy who defeat him cede...and then he seem more powerful then ever.
Vanguard prolly has a 2% chance of beating WoW subscribtion wise, most of it depend on choices they didnt make yet or commit to openly.
Will WoW even have 1 million subscribers when Vanguard come out? I doubt it, but maybe, I was sure WoW would already be dead by now. I was wrong. But the point is, bashing the competition doesnt make a product better.
Strong franchises have more potential then a new franchise. And Vanguard is a new franchise.

Competition's a great thing for the market.
While I don't think Vanguard will do much to the subscriber base of WoW, perhaps it will introduce some new ideas. From what I've read, it looks to be a very cool game.
Does anyone know if it's all PvE?
Ico
Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
By the time Vanguard comes out it'll be realistically around 2 years from now. Seriously, by then, BLizzard would've made almost more money on WOW alone then every single MMORPG combined since UO, not including all the Asian market cyber cafe L and L2 accounts. You really think Blizzard is quaking in their boots?
Besides, Vangaurd seems to be a VERY traditional RPG in look and concept. No matter what new features it might bring to the genre, working or not, the vanilla look won't attract those on the fence. Its just simply too early to even judge Vangaurd, because by those standards, ShadowBane should've blown away everyone according to its FAQ. The FAQ is just a marketing tool. Lets see what actually gets created. They're trying to do too much all at once and like previous efforts, that just gets you in trouble.
Most concerning is their idea that you can bring back challenge without the tedium. Sorry, but according to the FAQ, they're NOT straying from the tradition MMOG battle formula, so they can't avoid the tedium. Challenge only comes by making things take longer to kill in a MMORPG. Since twitching won't be used, so more skill won't be needed to win, whats more FUN about taking longer to kill everything? The tedium is caused by slowing it down and it seems EVERYTHING is being slowed down in the game. But, according to them, it'll still be "fun". Eveything thats deemed more challenging in EVERY MMORPG to date is only challenging because of more time needed to do it and more people needed to accomplish a goal. We'll see what fun is to how many people when Vangaurd brings back slower, more time consuming battles, travel times and LONGER dungeon romps. That travel system will become the most tedious of all if they stick to their guns. How many times will "adventuring" on the way to your goal just become more of an annoyance? This is just human behavior after 8 years talking. A new game will NOT magically change player perception or how they treat "time commitment."
Once someone can explain how challenge in a turn based MMORPG can come from anything else besides time, bugger groups and organization, I'll give you a cookie=) Isn't one of the MAJOR complaints about WOW, the fact that the most challengin parts take "too long" or take "too many people"? How will Vanguard change this?
WoW managed to gain many subscribers because it's a Blizzard game and has Warcraft in the title.
Vanguard has.... nothing. Thousands of people don't have a reason why they would play that game just because forum users say it's good.
Guild Wars was a success cause they allowed everyone to beta test the game FOR FREE! And the no-monthly fee definatly attracted thousands of people too!
Vanguard has a monthly fee. There's barely any marketting or publicity about it. So wether the game is bugless at launch, is actually a good game, unless they actually get a name for themselves, it'll never beat World of Warcraft.
The only games that I see actually winning over some WoW addicts is Middle Earth Online. It's based on LotR, it's well known, and if the game gets a good review and people don't complain about it, i'm sure it could steal a good amount of WoW subscribers.

R O F L !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WoW WILL die down in time as ALL games will. people want fresh meat in the MMOmarket and Vanguard will send WoW into Oblivion!!
The part where you said our opinions has no value exept ourselves?..You might want to take your own opinion into consideration.
What makes yours better than anyone else's here?
Anyway....People are getting bored of leveling to 60 in 10 days REAL days time. WoW is for REAL MMO Newbies to get their feet wet before they move on to REAL MMOs in times to come...Nuff Said!!
Nobody is perfect...My name is Nobody
That makes me doubt that Blizzard will do anything about it since those sweatshops ARE income to them!
Very Sad!!
Sorry for double post.
Nobody is perfect...My name is Nobody
WoW will be around for many years I think, theres alot of dedicated guilds / players and theres a new content patch every month or two, not to mention the new expantion thats going to be announced at blizzcon. Also with the 100 or so servers with all medium population and up WoW can realisticly afford to lose half of its subscribers and still be a successful since they would just merg 1/2 of there servers and still end up with 50 or so, and look at old blizzard games theres still people playing diablo2 and starcraft.

Delivered in true spastic fanboi fashion.
Seriously, I'm not WoW's biggest supporter by any means, but Vanguard won't touch it; mark my words.
Vanguard doesn't want WoW's players. Frankly an MMORPG is better off without a bunch of 13 yr old CS players.
Simple reason just like EQ ,vanguard is popular amongst the long time mmorpg crowd .It has no name outside this circle unlike warcraft.
So even if its the best ever mmorpg made it is hard to think it will pass 500k subs
Hmm not entirely true im player who looks and study a mmorpg first when its fun or have good pvp system good exploring world and all things that a good mmorpg needs ill go play it.
Becouse at moment i dont see any mmorpg i like that much and ive lay alot them and try alot betas , play wow.
But if vanguard will be what they clame to become ill concider playing it but what also a very big importends is the peeps who will play it and you learn best by go over to the forums of games you maybe wanne play and you will see and learn most about game and the peeps who gonne play it.
WoW i like alot but for community sucks major its to young and to many carebears who dont know how to play:(

Johnark, i agree with you completely. The warcraft name sold itself. Minimum advertising was needed, because Warcraft 3 already developed a huge fan base.
As for Vanguard, what the hell is a Vanguard. I had to look it up to see what you guys were talking about. And i am into MMORPGs. I dont live and breathe them, but i tend to think i stay up on the happenings in the MMORPG world. Vanguard doesnt stand a chance to overpower WoW. Im sure it will take some people away, but in the end they will come back to the game they love. WoW.
and the person that said CoH is the best MMORPG...are you crazy? they have good customization, but thats about it. the game seriously lacks content. Maybe CoV will be better, but i'm not putting any money on the table.
By the way- most of the people playing World of Warcraft are from MMORPGs. My old GM played UO, FFXI, and EQ2 and I have run into numerous people from Ultima Online and Everquest (the original). I don't see where other gamers get off thinking that World of Warcraft is the "kiddie" MMORPG just because of it's simple interface. The only people that act immature arent the "12 year old" kind, the biggest problem seems to be all of the Maddox wannabes that flood the channels trying to be narcistic, negative and sarcastic to every question someone throws into the channel.

At least for UK pick up the last 12 editions of pcgamer uk and there is at least 3 full page spread of WoW ads.But other games do ads too.EQ2 had one in the last edition.
Well i think it did bring in a large number of first timers to the genre as most of my guild are first timers(most from diablo which i think does not count as a mmorpg) but its a good thing as it expands the market and will make less companies drop their project because of over saturation the market.
wow was advertised heaps :P and still is
The only thing that can "own" WoW is the game itself. If people play it for another year and continue to be excited by it then it can still grow and grow (an expansion wouldn't hurt).
Vanguard isn't trying to be all games to all people, it will be very challenging and unforgiving to the casual/new player. I think it will do quite well for itself and I think many a casual/new player will rise to the challenge and find it enthralling, but some will simply be put off by the difficulty. At least I hope they are.
