Funcom has always been one of my favourite developers, because they have great ideas and make games with a touch of originality. Unfortunately, their technical execution has not been great in the past, but that has clearly changed over the last few years.
AoC is vastly improved over what it was at launch, and the TSW launch has really redeemed FC's technical side. So the old warcry of "...but it's Funcom !" is no longer applicable imho. However, FC is not a "big" studio with deep pockets, so we'll have to see how much manpower they can give to ongoing support and development of TSW.
I bought a lifetime sub for TSW, which was my personal "thank you" to Funcom for making a game that I can really enjoy. It's been many years since I've had so much enjoyment out of an MMO. Even if the game goes F2P or even shuts down in 12 months, I don't mind. I'm happy to reward developers for original and well made games.

Trimmed down the post a bit, but now it's showing my comments in the quote .. anyways -- but I like the first paragraph - I think it's a great summary. They do make original games, original concepts, they just don't build them well.
I too paid up for a life sub. I tried this weekend, I wasn't impressed. I still support the concept, and I'll be back in a few weeks/months to try again. I love games, and I will support the ones that catch my interest. Why? So as hopefully to support others to come out. I know some people will say I am wasting my money - maybe I am, but it's really no different than paying for a ticket to a ball game. I have no control over what is going to happen, or if I am going to enjoy the game, or the season - but I support the team by paying for my ticket. Same deal.
Blizzard, Turbine and NCSoft (especially after Blade&Soul release) imho. +ArenaNet if GW2 really as good as hyped
You can take Turbine off your top tier list. They've been churning out crap for quite some time with piss poor communication and customer service.I'd put Trion WAY ahead of Turbine.
Wait a couple of months before crying "victory!" - remember SW:TOR... and TSW is way too similar. Not to mention the double slap in the face that is coming with the released of GW2 and then WoW:MoP.
I would like to know 'way too many ' similarities between TSW and SWTOR..
Also you people need to realise that the audience for TSW is very different...and is not in same demographic of mass consumption like GW2. Mcdonalds MMO for fast food loving crowd.
Calling TSW polished is setting the bar pretty low. I had problems, my friends had problems and comparing BWEs, GW2 is a lot more polished than TSW and it still has 3 months of development. You couldn't even try PvP in the last BWE in TSW. Was it ready for public?
I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been-Wayne Gretzky
It's worth noting that purchasing TSW was one of the most painfully frustrating experiences I've encountered. I hit so many snags it was ridiculous.
Jury's still out how fun the game is. But only 15 mins in there are already some rough edges visible.
I believe you dont worry about that but I cant help wondering what caused it to be a painfull and fustrating experiance just to purchase the game?

You aren't alone. My game play is so poor, it's virtually unplayable. I more than exceed minimim specs. It still needs a lot of work. People seem to be either totally pro, or totally against the game. I haven't seen a whole of of folk in the middle where I am.
I don't play MMOGs that sell items that boost your combat abilites for real money, and I don't play games that mix "free to play" players with subscription players.
You do realize that TSW is neither of those things, right...

Zero problems with the game from my end, except for the chat tab issues and a couple of broken quests. Otherwise, it is *extremely* polished, in my opinion.

I hate to say this but what system do you really have? I tried it on my old 2.6ghz duo core using a old old X800 graphic card and the game runs fine. My top liner runs the game like a dream, on max settings and dx11. Sounds to me its not so much the game but your own system.
I don't think so they had a lot of failcom over the years. Honestly I am going to watch tsw and see how that all goes down. This time I did not even try to get into the beta for tsw, I figure I will give it 3 months then see how everybody feels about it.

TURBINE!?!?!?! LOLOLOLOL
That company is utter crap and filled with incompetance, how they constantly break things I don't get. Not to mention... how fast did DCUO go F2P? Their MotU expansion is overflowing with bugs that it makes one wonder if they even beta tested the game. The list is ridiculous, and thats just the unacknowledged bugs as Turbine loves to use the whole "there is no data to support said bug" which means numerous bugs must be submitted before they even acknowledge or investigate. They still use old dried out models that an 8 year old can design better, with an expansions one expects a whole new assortment of new models and not a same ol same ol' of previous models (engine needs a serious overhaul or reboot the game like ANet did with GW). Their expansion feels rushed which likely was since it feels like they pushed the game out as they are prolly concerned over Neverwinter who are getting massive reviews.
While I agree that a lot of games have their fair share of bugs but I've never had experienced many bugs myself if at all but with their xpac I've encountered numerous bugs. August brings the first major update which will likely set the tone for the game but from what I've seen of MotU so far, Neverwinter will likely decimate DDO's population if Cryptic can stand and deliver what so far been great presentations of their MMO. GW2 and Neverwinter can't come soon enough compared to this drivel Turbine came out with.

Well, definitions change. To me, top tier is a dev and company who makes truly original and unique video games. CCP as EVE. Dust is a nice concept but i'm not sure yet. WOD is another one that, if it works out in the future, another spot.
I don't consider devs who make traditional themeparks with a few twist like Blizz, Anet, Turbine and even Funcom to be top-tier. That doesn't mean i hate them at all, but it takes more than sucess and a few reused concpets made new to fully qualify in my eyes.
Trion is not top to me just because i like them as a company for their support and because Rift is actually nice. But Defiance is an example of a game that might change that.
Like i said, i'm happy FC isn't maing a pure wow clone (Investogation missions get my full praise for being actually original), but it takes more than that.
Eve is a good game but it is only fun for less than 1% of the population of mmo gamers. WoW on the other hadn was at one time or another fun for 90% of the mmo player pop. You don't get to discount it just because it doesn't suit your taste. The fact that it is a tried model doesn't discount the astronomically higher level of success, Wow and blizz get the number one spot until someone can come along and be that much better than everyone else.
So CCP gets to be top tier for sure, they are original. But Blizzard has been delivering what a large group of people want in a well done format for years now.
I believe you dont worry about that but I cant help wondering what caused it to be a painfull and fustrating experiance just to purchase the game?
Some friends of mine bought it from FC directly and all it was was click buy fill in billing details and they where done, the acount creation was no different the any other.
A number of the links on their site weren't working, and then instead of the billing details just immediately being applied and activating the account there was this weird extra verification step (which also hit snags with broken links.)
There were also just a myriad of little UI anomolies that didn't make sense, like how I was logged into a pre-existing FC account yet the new TSW account creation process treated things like I was creating an entirely new account ("Create new account" replete with entering my password twice.)
UI issues existed in-game too, as once I finally got everything squared away and tried to login there was a big delay between finalizing payment and actually having my account go active. The website vaguely indicated my account was active, while the game's UI reported "Account not authorized" (forget the exact message, but it was the same message as if you mistyped your user/password.) Obviously this message would've been clearer had it stated why I wasn't being allowed into the game (and given the website knew I was approved, the game shouldn't have gated me there at all.)

The whole list is bogus, WoW had the worst launch in history granted they did become the most successfull one, Turbine.. ya hm I dont even think there is glue left to kick. Ncsoft? really? L2 and Aion.. exploit, bot and farmvile online.
Just a minor correction.. Turbine did not make DCUO..
Why do people call Trion top-tier? Ok, they're ana wesome company, i agree. Very suportive and nice and make you get your money's worth with the updates, i guess. But for the time being, they've only made Rift which, sorry but while i like the game, it's too much of a generic wow clone with very few changed mechanics.

Thought WB acquired em for the reason of making DCUO.
Anyways MotU is an expansion release and I never saw any of WoW's expansion release be ridden with so many bugs like MotU.
I don't think so they had a lot of failcom over the years. Honestly I am going to watch tsw and see how that all goes down. This time I did not even try to get into the beta for tsw, I figure I will give it 3 months then see how everybody feels about it.
But calling funcom a top-tier developer rofl.
I couldn't find the endgame or reason to keep playing in TSW, I'm sure in 3 months the population will be pretty low. Funcom is half of whatever tier EA/Bioware is after SWTOR, still second most played MMO, which is sad but SWTOR has more story content and more importantly players.
If I was in the mood for a single player RPG with a chatroom, well I'm not after diablo 3, if someone else is, this may hold you over a bit but act now before players run out of content.

So the game has only gone live today, and you cant find the endgame or reason to keep playing. LOL sorry but that just strikes me as a pointless statement, given as how it would be physicallyimpossible to have reached any semblance of endgame or have run out of content even if you were playing preorder.
We all know what a disaster Anarchy Online and Age of Conan were at launch. Funcom made alot of questinable and plain stupid decisions in the past becoming something like SOE in MMORPG genre. But recently look.. Rise of Godslayer was great expansion, then AoC players got amazing new dungeons with the best raid encounters throught the genre. Now The Secret World released as polished, fun, unique and just all around excellent game.
Do you think Funcom rehabilitated itself and became one of the best MMORPG developers?
Not a chance. What I will give them is that they don't seem to be as crappy as they always have been. Still a long way to go before I'd consider anything that they produce, remotely a day one purchase. I'd put Trion well above them and I'm totally disinterested in Rift. But as a developer, they at least seem be able to tell their ass from their elbow. I'm not convinced FC can do even that yet.
Oh look another person perpertrating the myth that TSW released, 'bug free', on these forums?...
It's AOC again really, nice ideas, good concept, poor exection, false promises about release, missing features.
And no I'm not interested in a fanboi telling me all quests work fine, you only need to take a look at multiserver chat to see people complaining about broken story quest, broke investigation quests, the list goes on...
I have no issue with the ideas behind the game, I do however have issues with how Funcom do business and I especially have issues with people who are so blind to the faults they feel the need to spread lies about the current stae of this game here.

Imho there is only one top-tier MMO developer, and that is Blizzard. But Funcom might be in Tier 2 together with rest of the big MMO developers.
