felt like just the newest world of warcraft clone in a new skin, Combat was generally the same, same themepark-like content system
I also played like a day of beta 1 and simply couldn't get into it at first. Now I am trying it again and it is much more fun. Perhaps it needs to grow on a person. But from your above statement I have got to wonder if you are even talking about the same game. This may well be the most un-WoW like MMO to hit the market since Eve in both story and mechanics. And it is also not very theme parky in the quest lay out. You can take quests in almost any order in a zone and there is a lot you can find by simply searching around. And you will miss a lot if you only follow the story quests. The story does give you a path though the zone but it is hardly the only path you can take. You are also completely free to redo virtually all the main quests as much as you care to day to day. So you really have a lot of freedom to decide how long you will spend in a given zone trying out new weapons or simply exploring.
That. Plus the fact that with 2 weapons and 7 ability limit you really have to think about which builders and finishers to use. Most (all?) weapons have ST and AOE builders and finishers... that would be 8 right there.
Different builds for different situations becomes a requirement. Heck at QL5 I already routinely use 4 (PVP, solo, single-target instance and trash-instance.)
And back on topic... I'm loving every minute of this game!
This game is going to be both a theorycrafter's dream and nightmare. So many possibilities. Reminds me so much of GW1.
Well I've seen it on boss fights as well in pve - it seems like anyone using blades just spams their aoe attack.
Well Blade tanks are a possible exception because they have AoE builders that generate additional hate really early in the tree. The single target hate ones are a bit further down I think... so most of them just prefer to have the AoE hate and not have to switch between single and AoE builds in the starting areas.
So Blade and Hammer can do this for the threat. Guns can do this because they build resources on each target they hit with AoE builders (allowing them to tab around and burst damage things down with finishers.. it's why Guns are better DPS most of the time).
so that makes it OK that the developers designed the tank spec so poorly that they're hitting 1 button 85% of the time?
That's worse than grav round spam in SWTOR.. and its on a much larger scale.
Shotgun/hammer here with weakness as spec. Hit single target with shotgun aoe blast to weaken, follow up with single attack hammer blows that take advantage of weakened state, will use a single target shotgun blast when powers builds up on target to max. rinse and repeat. Not sure where I'm hitting 1 button 85% of the time.
Not a power gamer, so probably screwing up by those standards.
Played a weekend beta, maybe it's because I didn't get very far, but it was far too dreary, art way too depressing, some quests require someone else to re-triggure, no directional for some quests, coulsn't remove a quest from your journal. Each area had too many of exactly the same groups of baddies.
Possibly a fun game someday, some of the puzzle quests were really good, like the leveling system, never could figure out that supposed crafting system.
Ovarall? No way is it worth the money they want at this point...not even close. Wait and revisit after they reduce the price.
How reducing the price is goign make the game more easier? because crafting system will still be the same, so will be the puzzles and atmosphere of the game? you find game challenging so how does that change with reduced price? or you are saying you are fine with playing a difficult game as long as it is cheap?
*scratches head*
Where did I say anywhere that it was too hard? I did die a little more often than I'd like...but usually my fault for stupidly duking it out toe to toe without dodgeing or anything.
I keep saying this lol but TSW for me is by far the best themepark MMORPG on the market and i dont see anything better coming out this year..
Yo mean to say you dont know about GW2????
Well i know at list 10 people who r not interested in GW2. so am i. Also lots of gamers r tired of all this fantasy mmo that r filling the market every year.
I wouldn't recommend this game unless you enjoy spamming 1 button - that being your pbaoe move - especially in pvp. Everyone just zergs and the melee just spams the aoe spin move.. even in most pve you see it a lot. And I thought I had to hit spacebar a lot in swtor.... combat is just very poor and hard for me to look past that.. otherwise its a good game.
I used to think like you watching Arena in WoW. I had no idea what they were really doing
I know what they are doing - they're spamming their aoe - and it just looks like a clusterfuck of colored rings flying through the air as they zerg two or 3 enemies in pvp.
Sounds like you are basing this on the PvP map stonehenge, which is indeed really, really crappy. You get points for holding the centre, so of course it'll degenerate into a no-skill AoE fest. Both El Dorado and Fusang are heaps better, especially El Dorado which personally is the best theme park PvP I've ever played in my life, and that says something for someone who used to be more into sandbox PvP and always hated minigames.
The point I'm making here is that you have no clue and only partly right. Stonehenge can't be used as any sort of comparison to anything.
Well I've seen it on boss fights as well in pve - it seems like anyone using blades just spams their aoe attack.
Spamming in boss fight in TSW will get you nothing but a quick death. There is a depth to the the Dungeon boss fighting in TSW that I have only seen in one other MMO, another Funcom MMO BTW AoC, you need to be aware of what the boss is doing, if he catches you with one of his specials you are most likely toast. You also have to pay attention to your surroundings, standing knee deep in water, when a boss is about to release his electric AoE is one surefire way of wiping a team. In addition, team synergies will improve your chances in Boss encounters, so teamwork actually means something. PvP is another beast entirely, it still requires strategy, and a good team can really make a difference, but it's much more chaotic, faster paced, but still very enjoyable. Agree with Cantorage on Stonehenge though, room for improvement.
Still, combat is not the main focus in this game, I find it enjoyable, but the shining beacon of awsomeness in TSW is the world, how it keeps pushing on the boundaries of the real world, combining elements from Internet with ingame lore, fantastic. And of course, the quests and characters, love it.
For me, this is the game I have been dreaming of since I got into MMO gaming, back in the days of Ultima Online. It might not be your cup-o-tea if you are into... Well I don't know what you have to be into to dislike this game, but I am sure you can think of something. But yeah, if combat and lvling up and getting phat loot, and that big mysterious, holy grail of mmo's "ENDGAME" is your thing, then I guess I can understand why TSW is not pushing your buttons.
This is an adult oriented game, so if you are p!$$ed about the monthly subscription fee and trolling in here then thats your problem. Other then the subscription fee complaining, I haven't found any major flaw reported from actual players.
This sits in a sweet spot for those looking for lore and a combat system not overly convoluted.

All die, so die well.
