It was AUD$1.30 for unleaded/L today near here. Luckily I know one of the people who work there and they told me to come back later in the day when it was about 10c cheaper. When the petrol stations get like 2% Its insane how expensive it all is.

Terrible isn't it ? If things get any worse, parents may be forced to walk their children the half-mile to school rather than taking the SUV, others may have no choice but to use public transport. Utterly unthinkable. Obviously there are those such as hauliers etc with more serious cause for complaint, but as I understand it the price has been driven up by increased demand from India and China and the damage done by Katrina to US refineries and there isn't a great deal that you can do about that. UK fuel tax was frozen in '03, so protesters seeking to pin the blame on the government are misguided.

Oil is a fungible commodity - hence, it [the commodity] goes to the highest bidder. If you listen to the narrative, it isn't a lack of oil but problems in the supply chain in refining crude [oil]. From my reading around the subject, there hasn't been any major investment in new refineries in other 15 years (?) - hence, is Saudi or the other oil producers pump more black gold from the ground it will make neglible difference because the bottle-neck is not getting it from the ground but in the actual refinement.

My major problem with energy policy is that there is not enough investment in fuel efficiency i.e. how much oil each vehicle uses - rather than the price of oil itself. I always find it an irony that people who believe in market economies - the market finds its own price - have a problem with the price of oil, not to mention increasing vehicle efficiency.

My pet hate in economic circles is not so much how much (quantity) is spent, but how efficiently it is used. Sadly, human nature what it is, we only become mildly interested in efficiency when oil prices spike but are content to guzzle it whilst it is cheap. No-one has a right to cheap oil - it's a commodity.

** More knowledgable sources than myself on oil state that another factor for higher prices is due to the futures market. But I do not even possess even rudimentary knowledge on futures - other than the basic mechanism.

Fantastic piece of sarcasm! Made me chuckle! ::::28::

That said, as I live in London, driving is NOT viable anyway and the transport system is good (unless you live on the Northern line). Whilst I'm generally have a market-centric view, my concern for higher fuel prices is heating costs for OAPs this winter. Hope we have a mild one.

See? I do have a heart and a warm, fuzzy side. Does it get me laid? Does it ****. Ahem.

Diesel ::::01:: (although I dont know what taxes are on diesel in the U.K).
Are public transport standards that bad in england or is it the people on the busses that are horrible?
