Ok, so The Escapist is one of the best article-making machines on the 'net today for gamers, but this issue just pisses me off.
The articles about how guilds are made and are run are showing just the tip of what is just a dark and evil iceburg. It's all "nice" and "friendly", while ignoring what most guilds go through: Politics. All the inter-guild rivalry, competition, and hate is ignored. It's made to look like even in the darkest of hours, there's still fun stuff and friends to run around with. Not bloodly likely! Some other guild takes your kill or competes for the same targets is gonna throw more than just "looks" at you. They will throw dirt, blood, and knifes in order to repress you.
And you will have to do the same to continue to have fun. Most people here on these forums are in guilds or have been in one for an extended period of time, so everyone here should know about the politics that are in the games.
Laura Geneder (apparently a staff writer for mmorpg.com) wrote her article (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/10/22) and I would have expected more of an expert's view of the "crap side" of guilds in her article.

Well, I have to disagree. I mainly play DAoC, and I very much enjoy my guild, Arcane Sanctuary (on the Hibernian Galahad server). They are wonderful people! Of course, I have had some problems with 1 or 2, but that's it. As for guild rivalry.... if there's a problem with another guild, generally the GM's of the guild or alliances will take care of it. I remember I had someone send me a bunch of tells in-game yelling at me for being in the guild I am in, saying some really awful things. I immedialty told the GM and the guy left me alone.
I know all guilds aren't like Arcane Sancturay- full of loyalty and unity and fun, but there's many guilds out there.
