Is it just me or are female characters a little bit oversexualized?

Also, when was the last time you saw a "Popular" magazine with an ugly cover girl?  Sex sells.  Sad maybe, but true.  If they make the women thick, with large muscles, small boobs, and dressed like men people wouldn't be drawn to it.

I don't think the issue here was "women in video games are too sexy". The issue here was "women's armor in video games is far too skimpy" - which isn't saying anything about sexy or not. To be honest, the ranger's armor is probably some of the sexiest armor in GW2 I've seen, and it's really not that revealing. You don't need revealing armor to have sexy characters....

I'm pretty sure the OP was simply referring to the overall slutty look of female characters. He even compared them to prostitutes. Like Painlezz said, the average gamer are horny males and like to be entertained with sex appeal. Everyone on this thread I'm sure understands that. The simple answer to the OP's question is yes, female characters are often over sexualized, that is blatantly obvious. There is no big mystery or conspiracy behind it. Sex sells, end of story.

Here's Anet's view on the issue as far as functionality vs. entertainment. This is a podcast with the art director over there. Skip to 20:32.

This. Although I am still a little disapointed by GW2 gear so far, I think Tera has a much better selection (especially on High Elfs). It's no different for any form of American media, all kinds of burtal violence is fine but god forbid seeing a woman in her underwear. Now if we could just get an MMO with Korean Art and Western gameplay...

American media shuns female nudity? I think not.

It's just you. There is plenty of normal looking armor for females to wear in-game.

I guess that's why every single store has a rack full of american magazines with half naked women on the cover? Or why I can buy playboys and hustlers at the airport? Or why all I had to do was wait until 12+pm to spank one out as a kid in front of my cable television?

You know what? I know the majority wants skimpy armor for females, but I don't give a crap about the majority. I don't want skimpy armor. I'm tired of that crap.

American media promotes the "perfect" body image for women, but it certainly does not promote nudity. American movies and games are severely censored compared to European and Asian counterparts. I am in grad school studying Sociology and this is almost a daily debate I have in class (mostly against women in their late 30s, big surprise there). Look into http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Film_Is_Not_Yet_Rated  if you are interested, its a documentary about how MPAA forces movie directors into censoring anything that goes against their "Christian" ideals.

you said nudity. not half-naked women on magazines wearing small dresses. nudity is a different thing.  half-naked is not naked.

yes magazines with nude women are available at some airports and some certain specific places.

you may have spanked it to cable tv at 12pm but no there were not nude women on that cable tv at 12pm.

(edit: i did not realize you were talking about canada. i read America and thought USA. that is my bad, in the USA there are no naked people on cable tv or magazine covers in public places.  i don't think they even sell playboys and hustlers at most shops here where i'm at)

Art directors are following the desires of majority. That's their job. Majority also doesn't give a crap about you, if it's any consolation, by the way.

I moved to canada a few months ago, don't be trollin.

American media may not "promote" female nudity but they do a piss poor job of censoring it, hence owning the most porn revenue worldwide, and capitalizing from it is quite the opposite of shunning it. It's not hard to maintain a double standard

We have such a strong porn industry because the entire nation is sexually repressed. Everyone puts up a front, then behind closed doors they are into the nastiest shit you can imagine.

    See Japan.

I kinda felt the opposite, Teras gear have the same theme while in GW2 you can choose between practical and skimpy.

Since they havn´t added the cloth preview and most people havn´t started crafting yet you just see a small portion of the skins on player character, there will be plenty later.

As long as any character have the choice to dress practical I think the people complaining are a bit oversensitive. It wouldn´t hurt Tera to have a feel sensible skins as well.

Seems like a pretty even selection to me, a lot of the sets have full cover for the body and legs.
