After 1 week of playing Fallen Earth

RobAMacAFRobAMacAF Member Posts: 5

I know my opinion doesn't really matter to anyone besides myself but I just wanted to give my 2 cents on Fallen Earth. First, a little about me. I am 30 years old, I have been playing MMOs since MUDs and I have tried almost every MMO that came out since Gemstone on AOL.

Anyway, I seem to have a weird love for MMOs. I dont' really like Eve, but I love sandbox games. I liked ShadowBane for it's awesome PvP and Star Wars Pre-CU for it's amazing crafting. I have been searching for years for the "perfect" mmo that had a bit of a mix of everything. Fallen Earth isn't that perfect MMO but it's still a pretty darn good one.

Fallen Earth reminds me a bit of Pre-CU SWG. You can pretty much make anything in the game that you can find as loot. The amount of stuff you can actually create is staggering. Because of it's big focus on crafting it can take a bit to learn the in-s/out-s of everything. FE is also a skill based MMO instead of a class one. You pretty much make your character how you want. If you want him to be awesome with melee weapons and run around with a lawmower blade you can. Besides the basic fixing skills there are also Mutegenics that give you special abilities (DoTs, Heals, etc). You don't even have to spend points in these if you don't want. Like everything else it's all up to you.

Crafting in game is time based. You can start a recipe and it'll take X amount of time to complete. You dont' have to be in game to complete it once it starts. You can queue up to 20 things to be made. Some things can take a while to make. Right now I'm finishing up an ATV and I've been crafting the different parts needed for it for about 8 hours now. If you go in crafting locaitons while you craft it'll cut off some time but if you're in there....then you can't be doing other stuff. Always good to log off in one though if you have recipes queued.

There is PvP in the game and quite a bit of questing. The nice thing is you don't have to PvP and don't have to Quest if you don't want. I suggest doing the first couple cities because they will give you all the starting skills and crafting recipes and even a horse by level 3. I am level 14 right now and got all the way up there with almost all crafting. I find it a blast but the full crafting thing is just the way I like to play. I have done some of the quests though and the writing is actually quite entertaining.

There is no targetting during combat. You will need to put your cursor on your target and fire/swing to hit it. It makes the game quite entertaining and there is nothing more fun than beating the crap out of something with a hockey stick! lol. There are a ton of options for armor, weapons, (melee/ranged) plus you can dye almost every and they even have cosmetic slots so you can wear armor but look like you're wearing something else (most of these slots need to be bought with real $ though)

The community seems to be quite nice as well. There is a help channel where you can usually get an answer within a matter of seconds of asking questions and they even have it that you can send GMs questions and they will come to your aide without sounding stuck up.

If your computer can handle it crack up the post processing and graphic qualities and this game is nice looking, specially the lighting. The view distance is also quite high and it's nice standing on top of a canyon seeing all the different towns for miles while watching the sun go down.

Since I'm not high yet I can't comment on the higher level stuff. They have a marketplace but it IS NOT PAY TO WIN. You can pay extra money and it'll speed up certain things in game, (you can pay 9.99 a month to crafft at 120% crafting speed). It's nothingtoo crazy and everything can be accomplished by a free user that a paying user can.

The FE world is pretty huge. It takes a good 30+ minutes just to ride across the first zone and if you decide to try and run it it takes even longer. There is fast travel but it costs money and you have to go to that location the first time. And it's not available at all cities. Right now I only experienced the first zone and it's just a big bare canyon/desert area but it's still pretty with the lighting and all the scattered about remains.

I know I have been saying a lot of good things so here are some bad. There is a steep learning curve. By level 4 I had an inventory full of stuff and had no idea what to do with it all. Thankfully with the help of the help channel and learning some recipes I learned what I should be selling to NPCs, to players, and just discarding in general. The animations aren't the greatest but the graphics/lightning make up for this I suppose.

Last but not least, they have an App for the IOS devices that let you see the process of your crafting/auctions, see your stats and more info and even chat on the different chat channels while offline.

The game is 100% free. You can do everything a paying player can do (albeit just a wee bit slower) and it offers quite a bit of content. Give it a shot. There is a wiki out there with a crap ton of info about all the items in the game, what recipes are needed for what, etc. And if you get a little lost, ask for help over /h.

Hope to see you in game.

Interesting, so would it be alright to hold my hand so I can get a foothold in the game? If yes, please PM me. :) I come on this site and hang around for a bit every day, or at least every other day so I should respond within a reasonable time. Thanks!

First I want to say THANK YOU for the nice write up.I have played the game and never understood how to develope a character.Like you I focused on crafting and exploration. My true passion is RVR(plus crafting) .I know they made some additions to the game to facilitate faction fighting, but havent heard how they are working out.

I have been playing for a couple of weeks now and I am pleasantly surprised as to how fun this game is. I love the crafting and I actually enjoyed just spending a couple of hours scavenging through some ruins to get the mats I needed to make a new gun and some ammo. My only complaint is that the UI feels a little clunky at times, mainly around looting. I cannot seem to get it to consistantly let me loot when I am in AIM mode and having to toggle in and out of AIM mode when in a hostile camp has gotten me killed a couple of times.

Other than that no complaints so far.

I've always wanted to get into FE.  It's got great atmosphere.  Unfortunatly, the combat is the worse I've ever seen in an MMO and that kills the game. It's a shame.

last time i played FE, it was more then 2 years ago, and back then pvp pretty much consisted of getting 2 shot by snipers all day long. because of the optimal long range view and the ability to have long ranged sniper rifle being a melee or close quarters fighter was pretty much impossible. greefers would just sit on top of high buildings of mountains and snipe you even before you could see them.

is this still going on? have tehy somehow fixed how OP snipers are?

also have they improved graphics at all?

Nice review, thanks for that. I've been playing EVE for years, but definitely need a break. I tried WoW, Tera and Rift and none of them really do it for me. I'll give FE a shot after reading your review!

    FE is underrated.

Its a cool game and a LOT of people playing it.

It has its flaws but it is long term entertaining and there is always something to explore :)

    I love that game.

^This, see the melee zombie sliding towards you then after trying to hit him 15times with your rifle, your dead, because actualy he was RIGHT behind you...

The combat in this game indeed needs some time to get used to. But I think it's one of the best combat systems in any mmorpg. For those with no knowledge about the game; Fallen Earth has aimed combat, meaning that those who rather sit around pressing 1-2-3-2-1 repeatedly- this is not your game. The combat system requires skill instead of level. I remember PVP'ing a lot in my 20's (level wise afcourse) and I was more then able to kill level 30+ chars, just because I was good at aiming for the head.

Those who have guns in fallen earth play it as a FPS. Those who have sythe's and such play it the same way as TERA is played now by Lancers, the only thing is that Fallen Earth's system is a bit harder to master.

I tried the trial a while back, before it was f2p and just didn't really get into it.  But I saw it on Steam the other day, and knew it went f2p, so I decided to give it another try.

They've made a lot of changes and I'm liking it quite a bit more now. It's certainly not a perfect game, but I do like the sandbox nature. There is also a bit of self-sufficiency which I like. I've played plenty of MMOFPS games so the combat is comfortable. The skills (mutations) could be refined a bit, but the gathering/crafting is so much more in-depth than other MMOs out right now, that you can tell they put some development time into the system.

If I feel like doing missions, I can.

If I want to build up my stockpile of materials, that is worthwhile.

If I want to just grind mobs 10 levels higher than me to get some exp, I can do that too.

Too many times while playing Eve, I get the idea to do something and I either need weeks of training before I can get started, or the isk/hour simply can't compare to doing missions, making the activity pointless.  In FE though, no matter what I'm doing, I feel as if though I'm progressing.

A few days after starting up again, I'm even considering paying $9.99 for a month. The perks aren't 'overpowered' comapred to free players, but the faster craft/gather time would be nice.

Tried this game twice now.  I like the crafting, just can't get past the go there, get those, kill these quests.  Can't do it anymore.

this is all quite accurate. ive recently re-tried FE. its a solid enjoyable game.

apart from the community that is, which has to be one of the most cliquesh, ingrown, dysfunctional communities i've met in an mmo. (aside from the WoW server Dethecus a few years back >.<)

so i sadly canceled my sub.

And that makes this game interesting.  Screw up and you will die.    But it will be your fault  not the game's.

That is a common tactic and quite easy to counter.  Everyone knows the badguys won't run straight at you.   That would not make much sense in combat that relies on "AIM" would it now?  And they will constantly move to avoid attack also.  So why would you stand there like an idiot shooting, if that is the case?

It really amazes me sometimes the lame ass excuses people make just to not like a game.  Why not take 10 mins to figure things out instead??

No wonder there are so many crap games out there with these types of players around.   Sad

No idea what game you played, but it wasn't FE. Have been playing since launch with several level capped toons and can state with complete certainty that rifles, particularly sniper rifles, have never been OP in FE, that melee and pistols have always ruled PvP. In fact, in all my pvping, I have killed and been killed hundreds if not thousands of times, and have never been killed by a sniper rifle in FE on any character. I have killed -maybe- 10-20 toons with a sniper rifle during all that time as well.

I enjoyed FE a lot a few years ago, the main problem I had was the world was too large and too empty.

What hes referring to is the fact that people have a program sense, FE was stupid enough to put the game mechanic in the game. That lets them see where you are at all times, on their little gps doo hicky. Not to mention the community in this game is a bunch of fan boys lol. Dont say anything that isnt well established as proper for you to say. I played when it first came out and quit because of that little cheat, they anit never gonna fix. Plus alot of the quest were broken when it first came out, and it was other wise a trash game. I tried it again when it went F2p lol yeah right, this is far from free to play, they should of just stuck to a sub. But i got banned within like 15 mins, because i said something about fall out online would make a better mmo then this. So i quit forever after that one. I hate games that chat ban people for stuff like that. Stright dictatorship bull honkys that is. Say whats on my mind and get banned.
