Elven ears

Why is it that ever MMORPG that the ears of an elf are so large that it makes them look like chihuahua's? Why can't they make them more elegant and graceful looking like Legolas in the LOTR or like Vulcan on Star Trek? (I know Vulcan's aren't elves but it goes along with my argument.)

Well not every mmorpg makes them look big:S Infact only WOW is the only one that makes them really large!

Anyways why should every fantasy setting just copy everything else?

To me Warhammer is how fantasy should be done

I dunno, FFXI pretty much has that whole "I can stab you to death with my ears" thing going on with the Elvaan.

I was looking at screenshots for Lineage II and they do the same thing. Even in the screenshots for D&D Online have elves with ears as big as 747 wings!! My point is that elves are suppose to be creatures of grace but the oversized ears just ruins the effect IMO. It's like,"Look!! My ears barely fit through the door! That means I'm an Elf!!!" How about at least one MMO NOT following the usually cartoonish look of elves and make them look like the are the special race that they are and not some ridiculous cartoon freak!!

Maybe they should now be called Elfphants.

I think game devs pull too much influence from crappy, Japanese animie fantasy and not enough from classic fantasy.

Go back and read Tolkien; you will not find a single reference to pointed ears anywhere in it. Tolkien in fact felt that his elves did not have pointed ears at all, although he said if other people visualized them that way, it was all right with him.

Here is an link to Wikipedia (Iknow, not the best source) that explains somewhat the difference between Tolkien and post-Tolkien elves. This part of the atricle pretty much sums up what I've been saying with this post.

" For example, while most elves in Western Fantasy have ears only slightly longer than humans', elves depicted in anime tend to have very long ears that stand out at dramatic angles from their faces(see picture). Other artists may use any combination of these features, to greater or lesser degrees."

The Keebler Elves have pointy ears but are as short as Hobbits!

     Who is Tolkien?

Oh you mean J.R.R. Tolkien? He never created Elves. The only thing he did was come up with Hobbits/Halflings.

Tolkien took the idea of Elves from old European legends that were thousands of years old.

         - Northern European and Western European versions of Elves originated from Southern European and Eastern European versions of Elves.

         - Did you know if you go back far enough in European myths, Elves, Dwarves, Pixies, and faires were once considered the same exact things?

        - Elves once existed in real life. They were litteral discriptions of people. Read the book "Gorky Park". The bartender's wife is called a "gnome". Even in modern times, Winona Ryder was called a "pixie" in major newspapers back when she was on trial for shoplifting.

    ---------------------------------

Here is some super-hard core ancient earth myths and legends....... elves and the idea of elves were originally from the middle east. They were originally lizard-like gods. There are ancient books which describe elves as being like lizards. More about this when I re-find the books and re-find the info.

Sounds like someone hasn't played very many MMO's. Most don't make elven ears all that large.

Lineage II, FFXI and WoW have large ears on their elves. Because the graphics are based on anime.

EQ, EQ2, Ryzom (Matis) and many other MMO's depict elves with slightly pointy or not pointy at all, ears. More AD&D than Anime' influenced. I have yet to see an MMO that uses tolkien's depiction of elves.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Some of us happen to enjoy both styles of art depending on the setting.

As an easy reference, EQ style elves would look dumb in FFXI or WoW and Visa versa.

Quit assuming just because you do not like something, it is wrong or stupid. That is nothing short of blatent arrogance.

I think the real question here is, Why do (almost) all mmorpgs have elves?
