With day one of GW2 on the horizon, many players are starting to wonder which servers they should put on thier short lists to use when the great day arrives and they are required to choose a server.
There have been posts (like this one) which appears somewhat helpful in listing servers and guilds which are committing to specific ones, but I would like to know what others here think.
It would seem that if you get on a server that has no serious WvW oriented guilds, the server will be matched up in game against other 'equals' who are just as dis-organized and un-motivated lending itself to very little if any good WvW action for those servers.
Some people are posting that they think the servers that show large numbers of guilds intending to sign up for will problably get closed very early on, so a number of alternate choices need to be in place.
So how do you think players who really want WvW should prepare for day one in GW?
On a secondary angle, due to the way it is being handled, is this shaping up to be a huge rush on Day one to sign in and in the process choose one of the few servers that are known to have plenty of WvW players intending to go there.

I'll be picking one of the servers most daoc/gw1 vets go to that are heavily into pvp. I usually like to play on rp-pvp servers, but not since DAOC and LoTR have companies actually enforced naming policies, so I give up. I'm just going for 1 of the top 3 pvp servers, I don't care about the pve.
I'll probably be sitting there clicking my play button repeatedly after signing in over and over on Aug 24th until I get in the 25th, I just want to pick my names and get that out of the way first.

Are there Oceanic or unofficial RP servers proclaimed yet?
GW2 guru has a list of some of the guilds/communities and where they went for BWE's.
The list will more than likely get updated for headstart/release.

Yup, that link is in the OP, read it but it doesn't answer my two questions...
From what I've read from several sites Sea of sorrows is the unofficial Oceanic and Eternal Grove is the unofficial RP server. That could change for headstart/release, we'll have to see.

Alrighty thanks! Shall watch for more info on those two...
i would have thought if you were on a server that performed poorly matched against other servers that have performed poorly, that would lead to better WvW action for those servers.
its good to be evenly matched.
an example would be how the oceanics all piled onto Sea of Sorrows and then stood there alone all night with 100% map control because they had noone to fight.
idk about rp, what i know is that most part of the community is going to sea of sorrow
Haven't heard of Eternal Grove being the RP server. Tarnished Coast is the RP server.
Gw2 will probably have the hardest time to get a oceanic server, since WvW will require 3 servers against each other.
Oceanic servers means that, you need 3 oceanic servers, extremely low population on each servers, and we can't maximises time in WvW.
And speaking as a Australian player, I actually don't want a specific oceanic servers surprisingly, because that means everyone will play at the same time, and for PvP and WvW purposes, that probably means no opponents on other servers.
And Australian players will be welcomed in overseas servers this time around, because we can achieve objectives in WvW when local players are resting or going to work. hehe
Looking at the world choice list for guilds, I hope they will spread more evenly, so individual players can join those servers and have guild to choose from, instead of having few guys talking ingame to start a guild. Also more evenly spread means more evened populated servers, servers rotations will change more dynamically, instead of having to play against the same servers all the time. Hope ANet will take charge in this and forces a maximum amount of guilds to be located on one server, so major guilds can't group all onto one single servers, a few servers have way too many guilds in them.
I'm thinking of joining the MMORPG.com server, since I'm not affilated with any guilds or none of my friends are seriously considering playing GW2 yet, at least on that server i can at least relate to people and talk lol. ._.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Ahh I see, they are marked. Missed it when I looked the first time.
Of course there is going to be a major rush on opening day.... thats why im waiting a week to start to play so not so laggy hopefully.
And i will be playing in whatever server my friends choose to play most likely

If you really want WvW you should look into joining a guild that excels in it b4 launch. The good ones are almost maxed out and their requirements are getting tougher and tougher. So, the sooner the better. If you don't wish to join one, but still want to experience a high level WvW then join the same servers as them.
I'm not so sure about the server rush. The best WvW server doesn't mean anything if you don't care for PvP, and why should it? Eventually it will balance out, so even the most hardcore PvE/RP server can enjoy a balanced WvW.
Perhaps I should clarify one point. It has been my experience in other MMO's with large scale PvP like WvW that out of the entire population of the game, the number of players who participate in the large scale pvp is usually a small fraction, in the range of 10 to 20%. So perhaps what I meant by less than great WvW action is that on some servers the WvW playfields will have very few players spread out over a huge area.
There is no doubt players of all different levels can have fun battles with just a few people, but what I am looking for and most enjoy are battles with lots of players involved. I want to be on a server that will provide that often, not once or twice a month when the few casual WvW'ers get motivated enough to step into WvW.
Since I am new to GW in general, I don't have any veteran contacts, and I don't have that many friends from other games that have commited to GW2.
I don't mind ques. Ques tell me that something is desireable and demand outstrips supply. It means alot to me to be on a server that is full. I think the benefits outweight the negatives. More people, more choices, more stimulation, more to do,, more opportunities to have fun with others. I would rather have to wait occasionally to get in if it means the WvW playfield will have lots of players in it, as opposed to getting instantly onto a WvW playfield where there are only a few players.
It seems that it is only natural that given the choice players interested in WvW will be interested to being on a server where there will be plenty of other WvW players. I can see this yielding a situation where some servers will have very few people on them who are interested in WvW.
Yes, its just as you say. Those interested in WvW will find servers with the big alliances and guilds. But, is it really a problem? The server with the least amount of PvPers will be home to PvE oriented guilds, if you are on that server chances are you don't care to begin with. This is why I advice people interested in WvW action to research before hand and be ready. But I believe those are extreme examples, middle ground does exist. Most servers will be a mix of PvE/PvP especially at launch.
I hope if some servers get too crowded, or some servers that just have A TON of WvW players will offer transfers to other servers. Competitive players will move to even the odds if they do, I am sure.
It won't be any fun if one server has thousands of players in WvW, and the others have less than that ... there will never be an even match. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.
The one thing I don't want to deal with is queues and full servers ... it is going to be a pain in the ass if that starts happening. I also hope that the WvW matchmaking works fairly well and gets things evened out over the first few weeks. I am pretty sure there is going to be a lot of stompings the first week or 2 with severely lopsided match ups.
My biggest worry for my European guild as guild leader is to avoid ending on the "unofficial" italian, russian, polish, spanish, etc... server and have chat spammed with the corresponding language.
I've ended on an "unoffical" italian server once (in WoW), and while I don't mind italians, I'd rather avoid this in the future.

I'll probably pick a lower pop server just so I don't get bogged down by to many players, my rig aint the best for gaming. Once I know whats up and where I want to be maybe due a transfer or stay where I am if all is good. Can't really say yet though...
