I don't think GW2 will have any serious effects on any MMO's subscriberbase. Any time you question its longevity, GW2 fans are quick to remind you that GW2 is a game that doesn't force you to play for months on end. You can pick up and play any time you want. If you get bored with it, you can play another MMO for awhile until you feel like playing GW2 again. There's no subscription fees either, so there's no reason for players to cancel their already existing subs to free up money to pay for subs in GW2.
very true and i think over time personally the secret world is going to do well for longevity as with AOC having a hard time over the years funcom has to deliver. back on topic your comment earlier hits the nail perfectly, people here just hate swtor and anything with EA on it. This game is successful period , greatly no , widely not really but its still making money for the dev team and parent company. If the game has 14 out of 16 servers running at full during primetime then its doing tons better then any other game that has already released. Its just not the be all end all mmorpg that some of these people wanted to either praise or ridicule. Its funny there is like 3 or 4 servers in rift that make it barely above high population any time at all , yet you never once see these same guys bashing it . Or tera for that matter, so obviously its something on a personal level with EA and SWTOR.
you guys seriously are some terrible haters here on this site. This game is far from terrible , its not great and wont hold the mainstream but it has no glaring issues at all. You all wanted a SWG2 we get it , you didnt get your way and now have to come to this site and throw temper tantrums like two year olds? Seriously my daughter whos two and a half cries far less then some of the people on this site. I play TSW and not even star wars, it didnt hold my attention that long yet I do not post crap bashing it every other day. OP get your facts straight before you post this nonsense you know nothing about whats going on except from other forum trolls like yourself. 16 servers left is far better then you guys beloved Rift and EQ2 or AOC is doing. Heck look at TSW right now and see how many shards they have and population and I play that myself. Tera is what 5 servers most light? Name another game besides WOW that has that many active servers? You cant unless your naming wow or F2P garbage from asia.
Hmm, GW2 had 96 servers in the second beta.
and why should i care how many servers gw2 had?
you guyz really think gw2 gonna be the messiah of the mmo genre....stop dreaming and face reality already it wont

You shouldn't care, especially in beta or shortly after release. What is important is whether or not the game has 96 servers 6 months from now.

Will SWTORs shutdown be solid enough evidence for you or will you still be saying it is healthy after it is shutdown?
I am playing the game as much as possible now, before it shuts down. I should get everything I want to do to done, way before Dec 15th, unlike SWG. Unless they turn the game around and enhance it.
Voice overs and stuff really do not suit MMOs, as they are mainly for single player experiences. LOTRO also has voice over and cinematics, but only on the main questlines. Side quests are mainly text based. I think LOTRO has the right balance of text and voice over. SWTOR is just too much of it
Lol, I quit a month or so ago... But it isn't gonna shut down, haha. Dramatic much? It will go f2p way before it would shut down. You guys crack me up.

If we are going just based off number of servers:
Rift = 26 servers (Rift is older than SW:TOR)
EQ2 = 29 servers (Is a MUCH older game than SW:TOR)
AoC = 4 servers (older than SW:TOR, but you win this one)
I'm not taking sides in this agrument, but I just wanted to point that out. You in turn are bashing those games while complaining about people bashing SW:TOR. I know EQ2 has had a pretty stable number of subs over the years.
im not bashing any games with this , im pointing out just a fact . If you want to get technical since your using dead servers in the info provided then you can say SWTOR has over 100 so they still win. Rift all american servers but faeblight wolfsbane deepwood and one other are medium pop or sometimes high , all the others are Dead you can go to riftstatus website and see for yourself. EQ2 is DEAD it has like 3 servers ever leaving light so thats not right either , as im just basing my data off population trends not how many servers are listed but dead. Warhammer two servers AOC 4 servers TSW what like 9 i think? not sure id have to look. Anyways you know what i mean though im sure , my point is if your going to bash the game about losing subs , then go bash every other title thats released in the last 5 years as they are all dead in the water and doing worse then SWTOR is currently.
Deathlist of those confirmed casualties of 'The Tortanic':
In February 2011, Gordon Walton, the General Studio Manager of Bioware Austin, and the man who had directed the developmentt of SWTOR from 2005, left the company six months before the game was launched:
In early 2012, EA CFO Eric Brown 'unexpectedly' left the company. He was only with the company for three years.
In May 2012, at least four hundred of the eight hundred developer staff attached to SWTOR were fired
In July 2012, Lead Combat Designer - and the man many blame for wrenching out the rich features of SWTOR that might have made it a more satisfying game - Georg Zoeller was fired 'to take up a new career in an exciting new industry in Singapore'.
Today John Riccitiello is slated to be summarily removed as Electronic Arts CEO. He has been in charge of EA for five years and overseen a vertiginous drop in the company's share price: from £60 in 2007 to $11.71 in July 2012. While other games brought out under his watch, like DA2 and ME3, have not been as successful as the industry would have liked, I'd say that the commercial disappointment of SWTOR, especially after the extremely expensive investment EA poured into it ($200m plus including marketing) was Riccitiello's last mad gamble to turn the fortunes of the company round.
Next heads on the chopping block: Daniel Erickson and Gabe Amatanegelo.
...Meanwhile, in another part of Austin, a portly, sandy-haired man, his face lined with years of failure and depression, quietly picks up another modest bonus cheque and waddles out of the office to his mid-range American car and his dinner for one alone at a local Applebees. As he pulls out of the mostly empty carlot, John Smedley, CEO of SOE, 'The Man They Couldn't Fire' smiles weakly to himself.

Layoffs and job losses are happening in almost all walks of life and careers right now, Firefighters, and Police have had to take a severe pay cutts and a huge loss in wages in some States in the U.S, especially most Game Companys in the states. I don't know if you are aware of this but for the last 4 years The Economy has been in a resession. SOE, and Blizzard, has had a lot of developers leave as well. They then fill those positions with other developers, and designers who are willing to work for less. SOE has just lost some people working with Everquest 2 and have Hired some new PR, and Development people. I guess that means SOE must be going bankrupt too. *Rolls Eyes*

Everquest 2 isn't dead, and there are more then 3 servers. There are 16 servers. Freeport, Antonoyia Bayle, Peramfrost, and Crushebone are all full on peak times everyday.
PS: I don't like SWTOR, or EQ2, or play any of these games, but please if you are going to state facts at least make it factual, and not just a bunch of assumptions you have come up with just because you don't like a game and feel the need to bash it just for the sake of bashing it because you can't get over the fact that there are still people out there who have a life and like the said games you don't like.

I didn't bash SW:TOR about anything. In fact if you want my opinion about the OP's post I don't think that information necessarily has any correlation or proof that SW:TOR caused this. As it was mentioned layoffs of preproduction staff are common, especially in soulless large corporations like EA. I just happen to see your post. Very few titles released in the last 5 years are "dead in the water" as the only way I'd consider that to be true would be if service was discontinued completely for that MMO or they had an active population on the level of Vanguard's (which pretty much every title including AoC has maintained a better population), and as far as doing worse than SW:TOR that may be the case, but SW:TOR is hardly 5 years old so the verdict is still out on that one.
It's simply not facts. You also aren't counting dead servers in SW:TOR. As far as I know the only one with a thriving pop is the Fatman server. Maybe Rift or EQ2 servers need to be merged again, but if we are just using number of servers as a basis (which actually is a very poor indication of activity and active subscribers) then we need to account for all servers and compare from them.
I don't think we should use number of servers as an indicator for anything. Some servers support more people (for example TSW because they instance off players can support a larger threshold of players while a game like Rift has a very small threshold). It's one of the poorest indicators of actual population. Having someone do a /who command on each server and collecting data from that would be a better indicator, but still poor. The only way to get a decent indicator would be for the companies to flat out release the number of active subscribers.
you are absolutely right that you cannot really judge data by how many servers are left , but what im just trying to point out is SWTOR is far from some major flop like the OP and others really wish to portray here in this thread. I also do not play SWTOR anymore and havent in months , but the only game you will see me openly bashing here is Rift and thats for a personal reason and i try to not even do that but very rarely as you can see from my post history. SWTOR will still be here just like warhammer is and eq daoc etc . But my entire point on that post is just to say you cannot say that its dead and people are getting laid off from it etc when you got companies out there like Trion that have never ever had a healthy population other then box sales. Tera is the same thing and heck the biggest flop in mmorpg history for a triple A studio goes to mythic and warhammer online which is still two servers and guess about a 10k pop. So SWTOR is not leaving anytime soon is my real point based on assumptions of course .
You paint a vivid picture, but I would like more solid evidence, such as sub numbers, (which I know if they are very low they won't release). Can anyone here provide a calm rebuttle to the OP? I have mixed feelings obout the fate of swtor, as I want more mmos with big budgets and all voice over to be made, nothing wrong with large companies taking large risks. I have issues with the game but then I am impossible to please, would the flaws mmo vets here get annoyed at bother the general public that appear to be leaving the game?
Will SWTORs shutdown be solid enough evidence for you or will you still be saying it is healthy after it is shutdown?
I am playing the game as much as possible now, before it shuts down. I should get everything I want to do to done, way before Dec 15th, unlike SWG. Unless they turn the game around and enhance it.
Voice overs and stuff really do not suit MMOs, as they are mainly for single player experiences. You may enjoy them but others you group with may want to space bar them, especially if done them loads of times before. Games with voice over have been around for ages - in single player games. However they could expand on games like GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, MAss Effect 3 etc. Single player games with multipleyar functionality, just made a bit more multiplayer in the multiplayer options..
LOTRO also has voice over and cinematics, but only on the main questlines. Side quests are mainly text based. I think LOTRO has the right balance of text and voice over. SWTOR is just too much of it
I think it will take SWTOR's shutdown to prove that it was a total failure because I think it's a great game just with a couple pretty big, fixable flaws like the amount of content, stability, and dropping population due to the last two reasons. I still think they can pull it around and I've been considering resubbing soon myself, but I'd like to hear a bit more positive feedback from players about the next big patch or two.
It's your second paragraph that hit home though. I remember I had the exact same feeling about Tabula Rasa. I never got to play it as far as I wanted to unfortunately. I left for a few months due to lack of content, then next thing I know it's announced that it would be shutdown. I never saw it coming because I thought it was just too fun for that, albeit needed a bit more work to sustain enough subscribers to survive, but we had UO, EQ1, AC1, and DAoC to show how sometimes MMOs can seem to go on indefinitely regardless of how many leave for a newer MMO.
Now I've taken a break from SWTOR to go back and play the games you mentioned like GTA IV, RDR, and ME, and you're right. They would be incredible with added MP functionality, and the voiceovers are more enjoyable at your own single-player pacing.
I'm also back playing LOTRO lol and you're right; the voiceovers are almost not even noticeable because it's used so sparingly and logically in the right places.
I'm trying an EVE trial again too because out of the very few sci-fi space MMOs I would play, EVE would have to be a close second choice below SWTOR on the very small list of available scifi games. Going back to SWTOR for me is contingent upon added content and features in the next couple months. I hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as TR though. Considering Warhammer Online is still active, I would like to believe it will take a lot more to bring SWTOR to a close, but am I making the same mistaken guessing that I did with TR? Could be, considering the insane budget allotted to an MMO with quickly-dropping subscriber counts compared to it's budget would have to be the biggest reason TR closed so soon too.
Is it better if MMOs stay on a low budget and succeed for many years with just a mild but sustainable subscriber count, or is it just these developers that don't know how to do it right on a huge budget with equally huge expectations on it's success?
This is baiting, with not a lot of discussion, but rather misinformation and fighting. There have also been very recent threads covering the same happenings. Locked.

You should work for Fox News, You would be good at hyping up the masses of sheep with a pile of mis-information, and conclusions you have come up in your head without really knowing any of the facts, first.
That is all
Cheers

In July 2012, Lead Combat Designer - and the man many blame for wrenching out the rich features of SWTOR that might have made it a more satisfying game - Georg Zoeller was fired 'to take up a new career in an exciting new industry in Singapore'.
Not to be a dick, but I can't be the only one who smirked at the implications of '"to take up a new career in an exciting new industry in Singapore", right?
Locked.
