Is it possible to play casually?

IshiwadedeIshiwadede Member Posts: 11

Hello folks!

I played EVE a bit three or four years ago for a few months. It was fun for a few months, but eventually the learning curve got to me and I broke from the game.

I'm starting to get an itch again for a Sci-fi MMO with some customization options, but I'm wary.  I've heard of a few changes to make the game more friendly for new folks, but that may not translate into casual play.

The game seemed like a larger time sink than I could invest in, no offense intended. Is it possible to play casually and still have fun?

Thanks!

It's very possible to play casually, you'll sort of be playing a different game though..Getting into null sec would take forever, but there's still a lot of fun to be had in high sec places. I used to play about 1-2 hours a day and it was still a really fun game. I managed to get into a small corp with frequent little skirmishes breaking out, have a decent little crafting/mining circle set up with some friends, and still did a couple of missions here and there. Like I said though, it'll be reallly difficult to get into the serious parts of the game, but the shallow parts are still fun..

Yes I have a dream… And its not some MLK dream for equality. …I wanna own a decommissioned lighthouse …And I wanna live at the top… And nobody knows I live there. …And theres a button that I can press, and launch that lighthouse into space.

If you can find a group of like minded folks then yes you can enjoy the game casually, if you are just going to play solo very casually I would say it is completely pointless playing EVE, the sort of tasks you would be doing with very limited playtime would be mind numbing.

Yes you can play Eve casually with no problem. I've been playing Eve Online since approx 2007, both casually & hardcore.

Only difference is I could not play for free when I was playing casually until I had about 6-7 million skill points in Science.

Some of the tasks I would do casually:

    • Blitz thru missions (PVE)
    • Parade thru null sec catching ratters by surprise in my Pilgrim ship (PVP)
    • Explore and find valuable wormholes and sell off their locations (Diplomacy)
    • Run research agents on 3 different toons to pay off my monthly bill and manufacture Tech2 ships (Crafting)
Since the accumulation of skill points is not directly tied to how much time you spend IN GAME, you can experience many facets of Eve without being on it 24/7. Seriously doubt the validity of anyone who tells you otherwise.

Not from what i've seen, a friend tried it casually, jumped on and basically got destroyed over and over. He didn't know about insurance. and found out that the only way to get ahead is to actually do jobs on the game for money and join what they consider guilds. That's the only way to survive on that game. That and the game requires an immense amount of time, anyone who works just can't do it.

This is utter BS.  There are plenty of casual play options available in Eve.  If you want to experience the most risky and rewarding playstyles of Eve though you will have to invest at least 2-3 hours in one session.

Just as an example, I work two jobs and I run a nullsec corporation in Eve.

Don't bother or at least wait until CCPs current plans are completely rolled out before you start playing.

The game is going to either crash and burn or become something far better than it is.  CCP is taking a big gamble on the playerbase behaving the way CCP desires and you should probably wait and see if they get on board or not.

EVE is perfect for causual playing. This is because u learn skills in a real time, even when u r not logged in. So there is no rush or a strange feeling that u need to actively play to progress your character. Nowdays, u even don't need to worry about making ISK, as u can just buy plexes.

There is nothing casual about EVE.

    But, faction wars maybe close.

I played EVE for maybe 2 years without ever joining a corp or seeking out PvP.

Pretty much just logged on occasionally to do missions, set skill training, and upgrade my ship/setup. ~but it is much better in a player-corp, rather than one of the NPC ones you get stuck in (which are only good for chat), but being constantly wardecced by assholes left a bad taste in my mouth. Some days it was just impossible to play because some guy piloting a t2 maurauder class ship is parked with his buddies outside your station 24 hours a day. Apparently the game is srs bidness to basement dwellers, and they don't have to log off to eat or bio - they consist solely on your anguish.

So it set a precedent, to me at least, that playing casually and *not* joining a player corp can be worth it to avoid harrassment.

Casually, easily done as long as you aren't being stupid.

Mining, Research, Manufacturing, PvE Missions, all can be done fairly easily and casually.

You want to dabble in Incursions, LowSec or NullSec, PvP, you can, just remember to expect a ravenous Tiger behind every rock and be prepared for it and as well remember the golden rule "Don't fly it unless you expect to lose it" and all will be good.

Most definitely possible. You will not probably become the galactic overlord yourself, but even the seemingly daunting stuff like living in nullsec can be done with only few hour time per week, provided you find a good corp and do the stuff you are supposed to do when you actually log in (been there, done that).

Which is why I said there is nothing casual about EVE, because you will have to work your butt off just to compete with those guys.

Or, you can play just a small part of the game, like you have done. Thats not playing casually, that is denying yourself 98% of the game just to avoid having your ship blown to bits everytime you leave the station.

At least with faction wars, your on a more level playing field, sort of. But you can at least play more of the game, instead of hiding...lol

    No

    EVE has a hidden grind.

Its money grind. Without money you can not progress , because you can not afford skills.

To make money you need to do missions or mine. And these take lot of time, and you can not stop in middle.

And when you have things that take big chunks of un interruptable time =/= casual

I think you need to be more specific about what you mean when you say casual. Personally I would say I have been playing the game casually for 9 years, and that I am currently playing it casulally in WH-space puting in about 10 hours weekly to the game.

    There are a vast number of other ways to make ISK than missioning or mining;

    Trading

    PI

    Blueprint R&D

    Exploration

    Scamming

    PLEX

    Industry

to name but a few. Some of them will need an initial "grubstake" of ISK.

Really, he should just leave high sec, learn the basics of pvp in a good corp, and those guys will become much less threatening than before. It's all about experience in EVE (and having some good pals to fly with), not skill points, not isk. And you can get it even by playing casually, if you have the right attitude.  Right now faction warfare is an ideal opportunity to get your feet wet in pvp (with cheap ships to boot) and you can learn excellent isk while doing so.

Yes, this game can be played 'casually'.

Fun fact, the most infamous people that 'play' this game rarely login at all!

The Mittani, Vuk Lau, Shadoo etc.
