Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Ive just realised while I wait patiently ......

Im looking at the back of my age of conan box, while awaiting to get my full retail copy tomorrow of the secret world , it

says here first 30 days subscription included, and then it hits me:

These mmos we are buying, cost £35-£50 for the standard edition of the game, and all we get with that amount of

money is 30 days of playing he game ?

It never even occured to me in this way, that im paying £10 sub every month for mmos, forgetting that I only got

the first 30 days of game time free with the game ! Then that £35-£50 is a waste if you dont resubscribe.

Roll on the days when subs are banned in favour of  free to play or guild wars model - Pay once for main game, then for expansions if you choose to buy them and an item shop.

First off, mmorpgs cost 60$. TSW only costs 50$. Don't know where you get 35, unless you mean price drops, but that happens to any mmo with subs (which is why i wait until after alunch to buy)

But on topic, why are the 50$ a waste? Video games today don't even have much more than 1-2 month, max, out the box. Also, nobody forces you to sub back to the game.

If i buy a good mmorpg that only lasts me for 1 free month but is fun during that time and i love it, it's much, much less of a waste than a crappy B2P that i go "meh" once i'm finished wiht it.

35 Quid... pounds... English currency. Conversions rates....

I've played single player games for way, way longer than 2 months. I'm always playing Civilization. I play Minecraft from time to time and I only dropped $15 on it. Oh... TES. Way too much of my life has gone into TES. I could list many more.

Single player video games today do indeed last far longer than 1 or 2 months for people. The poster has a point.

Your not only buying game time, but your buying a license and paying their salary for putting in the time and money spent making/upkeeping the game.

One thing I've learned to do is not look at what I'm paying up front or per month, but asking if how much I'm paying or had paid was worth MY time.  Was it entertaining enough to cost what I've paid......for the most part I always say yes ( if I get a few weeks out of a game )  Its the same as any other console cost....some of those dont even keep me entertained for a few weeks.

    oh, shush.

In that 30 days the game could easily deliver you 100+ hours of entertainment (depending on your personal situation), which is FAR more then the 15-20 hours that is becoming the norm.

Yet you complain about MMORPGs and not something like that? How is that much play time a 'waste' of money?

    Get a grip.

The sub model offers incredible value, especially when you look at the totalled up price of all the stuff broken up to be in the cash shop, all of which used to be in game to played for as part of your sub.

It's the fact that the sub offers a better deal for the player that the industry wants to move us to the cash shop at all.

Still, some people don't understand the deeper debate and all they see is the word 'free' and they have a full on brain fart and start to froth at the mouth. God help us all.

A typical MMO sub fee is like 50 cents a day, USA. I could spend one hell of a lot more in a single night at a pub, or even just a single movie with treats. So when people cry about sub fees I just go, Hunh?!?  If they cannot afford the sub fee, they probably should be playing, or need to party/smoke less and play more. :)

As to the Box cost itself, I don't begrudge them the fee, as a typical MMO has spent 3+ years in development, they need to pay their wages somehow. Now if they pull a bait and switch type things as in D3 and SWToR, then I may gripe and move along.

It seems like it would make more sense for the consumer if they knew what they were actually paying for before they spent their money. What if at the end of every 3 months the developer brought forward additional content for $45? Then the decison would be based on the quality of the content offered and not the potential of what might be someday. This is essentially what the original poster is saying at the end of his post.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most developers could not offer $45 (nearly the box price) worth of content in a 3 month period. They probably couldn't in a 6 month period. To add insult to injury, they often ask you to pay another $30-$50 for an expansion after you've thrown in ~$200. Which leads back to the question of... what are you really paying for?

I don't think it's about trying to get things for free, I think it's more about getting value for your money. Like the original poster said, I can't play a sub game past one month without shelling out more cash. What about this game makes that cash more worth it than a single player game? Often times, there just isn't anything to justify it. Particularly since there are so many quality games with social experiences that do not include a sub.

Are you trying to say that there aren't a lot of people that play single player games for more than a week?

My nwn2 has 3190 hours played on steam, skyrim 177 CS 1.6 i played more then i played nwn2 and oblivion probably lies around 300, so yes I have been starting to doubt the validity of subs but the thing that annoys me most about them now that i got a tons of mmo's i bought is that I no longer can play them again not even for an hour without shelling out a quarter of a new AAA game.

I live in uk dude, that is why they cost £35-£50 . its a different currency to america :)

I decided to reply to your post also because you already helped me see... We get a whole month of gaming for the £40. If i was to play call of duty as much as i do for mmos, then id only get 7 -12 hours of the main campaign for my £40, so its true you get more value out of an mmo , because you can play 4-5 hours per day, every day per month and still not have completed all the content :)
