Wow is a solid game. It has changed a lot and is marketed more to kids these days IMO, however, solid. If you are wanting something to tide you over I would suggest the F2P route myself.
TSW is very very good with the exception of the clunky combat which caused me to get a refund on my pre order. Lots of other games with other settings (eve, coh, etc) that are very fun to play as well.
I would suggest reading and researching yourself though. Asking someone what thier opinion is you wil get just that, thier opinion, thier likes and dislikes.
I didn't like the clunkly combat in TSW either; but that's completely changed since it went live. You may want to try it out again. It's wildly different and addicting as shit.
WoW is like any single player game like Call of Duty, it is made for you to reach level cap in 3 days via quests to see the game history like a campaing and after that, you just play in instanced rooms for pvps, just like the multiplayer in CoD, doing the same rooms over and over, until you get tired and go to the next game, I got tired of WoW after 1 month, and never came back again.
if you only want to find something till gw2, enjoy dc universe online or star trek online. both free to play and good enough to be a filler for a month. if you don't have a problem with a little bit of grind and want to see some 'out of the usual' gameplay then try atlantica online, in which you can find a really nice and helpful community. but if you 'spinning the wheel' in rift you should stay away from similar mmogs and this includes wow.
In a nutshell, was a hardcore old school crpg player (and old enough to have played through the Gold Box series) but got into MMO’s very late. First MMO was LOTRO, primarily due to my interest in the source literature. Was happy with that for about 3 years, but game changes orchestrated by Turbine led me to lose interest and ultimately stop playing. Went outside the fantasy realm for my next MMO, Fallen Earth, and played that for about a year. Ultimately, my interest waned as end game looked to be heading down the road to only PvP stuff, something I’m not particularly interested in.
Been playing Rift now since launch. Still fun and Trion really seems to be working to keep content coming, but I generally get a sense that I’m just spinning my wheels with it at this point. Basically, I’d like to find something else to waste some time on, perhaps just long enough for Guild Wars 2 to come out, but maybe longer. Would the 500lb gorila, WoW, be one to consider or is it much too late in the game for that? Also considering The Secret World, but since I’m looking to get into something new soon, not sure if I want to pick up a game that has just launched. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.
If you've never played it, WoW is a good game that will keep you occupied for a good while. They started a sale, recently, where you could buy everything (including Cataclysm) for $30 (that is a ton of content). Not sure if that sale is still going on though.
The most fun i have ever had in WoW was in the beginning of my adventure, being a complete noob and being in complete awe of the world around me. I would love to get that feeling back, in any game.
I had no idea this thread was still active but apparently the moderators moved it out of “The Pub” where I had originally put it, first to World of Tanks (!), then finally here. I thought “The Pub” was more appropriate since it was a general query that would encompass almost anyone who may have played WoW previously, but whatever.
I appreciate reading the additional comments from everyone. And to bring a bit of closure to this thread, I actually decided to take advantage of that $30 deal a couple of weeks ago and buy all the current WoW expansions. It’s been fun so far. More interestingly, playing low-level WoW so far has made me lose a bit of respect for Rift. I can now see where Rift came from and to what it owes a lot of its basic play mechanics. Rift made some improvements (after, what, 6 years WoW never came up with a quest item wallet?), but I can see some things in WoW that really make the gameplay slick. I can see why it would have been addictive. Thankfully, it plays more like a pleasant diversion for me. It’s been easy for me to quit playing when typically I’m pretty hardcore with a new game.
I think the deal made getting the game worth it. At least I’m only out the 30 bucks if I quit playing at the end of the month. I’d rather have the $60 back that Blizzard got out of me for Diablo 3.
I knew I should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque...

You aren't kidding, I am trying to decide if I want to return to WoW after years being away. This thread has helped me a little.
Go play WoW, you have to experience it. None of the other mmo's out there get's near the polish that Blizzard comes up with. So for that alone you need to experience it.
It's never to late to play it.
I don't play anymore since I'm bored of it. But hey been playing from US Beta till cataclysm so tbh I find it normal to be jaded. Doesn't mean I have to spout negativity on it. And I'll prolly return to it after a while anyway.
(And I actually am a Sandbox lover, OMG BLASPHEMY FOR LIKING WOW!1!1!1! )
If you are a first time WoW Player, by all means do the trial at least. It is free.
As for after that.....You might become disappointed once you reach max level (If you decide to go on).
The community is horrible for the most part. You will do alot of grinding dailies and sitting in queues for a *chance* to get a drop you need. Very time consuming and the Risk/reward is not calculated at all. It's a Dice roll.
I'm waiting on GW2 myself, played in all the Betas and I LOVE IT. It's much better than WoW in every aspect from my own experience. (I can't speak for ohers).
It's really up to you. As I said if you never tried WoW then you should. At least the free trial, see how you like it.
Also look into GW2, that MMO makes me want to roleplay again. It really draws you in.
Either way, good luck. Hope you find what you are looking for.
The free trial is a very good idea, not just for WoW but any mmo your interested in. Although at this late stage in the game the biggest negative imo, is the initial cost of buying the game and all the x-pac's to stay current.
Its not to late tho its different than a new mmorpg what is just building up . In general you shouldnt have problems catching up and now with the new expansion release its even easyer since every expansion gear etc is mostly reset so easy to catch up. One thing about wow that you know for sure that it doesnt go bankrupt or whatever like alot of new mmos do so you are sure to be able to play for years if you decide to.
lol If youre a first timer to WoW you should love it. Unless you've already played Runes of Magic, Allods, Martial Empires and um a zillion other games for years before trying WoW. WoW is better than all of them but its the same mechanics for leveling and questing and combat and all that.
If you havent tried all the F2P games just like it then i think you would likely enjoy the trial.
I just remembered i did return to WoW after Cataclysm lol did the friend resurrection scroll that was cool. Played for a bit still just tired of it is all. Wonderful game.

Everyone gets hooked on WoW, thats why all of the hate exists
It's too late to really catch the glory days - by a couple years, at least.
The game isn't dead, but it is dying surely as it gushes players faster than they can leach new ones in via new markets/regional releases.
You can have fun here, still, but STAY FAR AWAY FROM ANY REALM NOT LISTED AS "FULL."
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT ROLL ON LOW POPULATION, MEDIUM POPULATION OR GOD FORBID "NEW PLAYER" realms.

To be honest?
Go play EQ2 F2P, VG F2P (when it hits), or Skyrim, and -maybe- GW2 will be playable. (MAYBE!)
Save your money, Blizzavision no longer deserves it.

Personal advise to OP, dont use the LFD too much, which you will get at level 15, not sure about trial account.
Because you will out level the area.
Best is only use it when you have quest to go into a particular instance, like Wailing Craven, and choose it for queue.
Enjoy the game for what it is, large seamless continent, day and night cycle , tons of professions, etc...
Slowly and make your way up.
The WoW now is so much easy compare to last time, where even FP ( flight path ) is given to you without the need for you to look for them first.
So enjoy this , which i believe, the last true themepark mmo, that still retains some old school elements before its gone forever...
