Commanders in WvWvW

PaRoXiTiCPaRoXiTiC Member UncommonPosts: 603

I come from Knight Online (AKA, Worlds Greatest PvP Game)

That being said, in Knight Online we had Wars which were much like WvW PvP. In those wars we had commanders that were automatically chosen by being the leader of one of the Top Guilds in your server. The commander got a mount to move faster and did extra damage. They also had the ability to post Master Chat which would go across the top of every players screen to help with leadership and coordination.

What do you guys think about something like that in GW2? Wouldn't that be a nice addition?

There's some info about it in official GW2 wiki:

    http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Commander#Squad_commander

Not sure how it works though

There will be commanders in wvw but info on that is a bit scarce at the moment.

I'm glad that in GW2, joining squads is optional, and that you are not forced to listen to some snot-nosed teenager just because he has no life and leads a big guild. The concept of commanders in Knights Online (best PvP game ever? hum haha...) sounds like a major nuisance to me rather than a beneficial tool. No player should be able to put priority messages on my screens if I don't want him to. There can be a few good ones, of course, but the risk to have some teenage immature able to get such "power" makes it an utterly bad idea.

This feature is already in the game with some changes.:

-Anyone can be a commander (in Gw2 its called Squad leader) with enough funds (this will probably change, I believe the amount of PvP glory would be better than gold).

-Squad leader can write in special chat (but also his squad mates) and everyone can see his icon on the map

-He does not gain any special buff for being a leader

-Also, I believe he can draw lines on the minimap and ping locations and his squad mates would see.

NoNoNo, but the commanders from "Natural selection" on the other hand would make an awesome addition. Someone who sees the world in a RTS view and could flag objectives to the players. OK, maybe not in WvWvW but for 5 Vs 5 or better, 10 Vs 10 it would be great fun.

Of course to give a buff (and extra drop and XP for anyone killing him) to the guildleader controlling something in WvWvW could add some fun things as well, but every gold with their own keep or similar should have one in that case.

That would be pretty damned awesome.

I love natural selection for that, and have always thought about how viable that would be in an MMO.

I think the top players on the battlefield should be made commanders.

I disagree (and thankfully ArenaNET too).
The system where everybody can be commander, but players choose with which commander they want to play, is much better.

If a commander is bad, nobody will join his squad. But if a commander is good, and notably had a good tactical sense in WvW, people will join his squad even if he's not on the top of the PvP kill ladder. Natural selection, Darwin applied to MMO :)

back in the day in Warhammer Online we had people that were looked upon as unofficial commanders for RVR that got everyone in all the warbands working together and following the commanders orders and it used to work very well.

Nowadays those people have moved on that used to lead and all that are left are small groups out for themselves or solo players either through choice or personal circumstance roaming the RVR areas, and it is a real pain to get everyone working together.

Id say its a good thing having someone who can get everyone pulling together in WvWvW. to get things done otherwise you will just have a small group of people working together to defend or attack while the rest of your side are running round waving their hands in the air not knowing what they are doing. and if the person is a bad commander then nobody will listen to them anyway and find someone that does know what they are doing.

I totally agree with you, of course, what I don't agree with is the idea of having people promoted just because they are leaders of a big guild or top rank PvP killers, specially in World vs World where tactics matter just as much if not more than killing. It seems we say the same thing anyway, natural selection will sort between the good leaders and the snot-nosed kids who just want to be leader because it's "cool" :)

Well that will mean all the biggest guilds will be the commanders and they will pretty much run wvw.
