10 year+ MMO Vet, looking for a new game, tired of the same ol

N1kthequickN1kthequick Member UncommonPosts: 24

Hows it going everybody, Im looking for a new MMO to play and cant really find anything to suite my tastes.

Ive been playing various MMO's for the last 10 years and recently ive tried out ALOT of different MMO's but just cant find one to keep my attention for more than a month, figured you guys might be able to help me find something worthwhile. Anyway, usually I play crafter/fighter and dont mind leveling solo or group, just as long as the quests arent the same old Kill X/Find X. Im also looking for something that has a decent endgame, I dont mind doing dungeons or raids - in fact I love them, but the dungeon design HAS TO BE GOOD.  Also I really like the extras some games have - im looking for the complete RP experience, not so much in chat, but housing, good economy etc. Not really a big fan of PVP, but if its there I dont mind it.

Heres the breakdown of games ive played and what I did/didnt like about them:

Tera - I recently bought TERA for $8 at bestbuy and although I LOVE the combat system, just the same old grinding gets realllly boring really quick.

Guild Wars 2 - I love the pace of the game, everything is quick from one place to another, already got a preorder in but dont think its gonna keep my attention for a while.

Fallen Earth -  I also recently tried out Fallen Earth but it doesnt really have a good direction in the game, which made it really hard to find the next areas to be in. Although the fallout vibe was awesome, its far from a polished game.

Rift - good game, but same old quests make it boring, I played until lvl 20 and then quit.

LOTRO - I LOVED THIS GAME, but Turbine banned my account for foolish reasons and I do not wanna go back or give them anymore of my money.

SWTOR - Played it until 50, loved the dungeons, scenery and all that, but no endgame at all.

WoW- Played for a about a year until the next expansion came out, then got over it.

Eve - I really like the game, but I dont want to invest 1+ year just to get good and never really be able to catch up to the big guys.

Any help is appreciated!

Any suggestions?

I am in the same boat, been gaming online for over 13 years. Bored as hell with games atm. I had been into MOBA games, but no matter how many shiny new characters they keep pumping out, every match is the same old thing with minor differences, boring and repetitve. Got back into DDO yesterday since i had a giftcard for my Bday to spare. Pretty much just killing time untill I can try Archeage or Neverwinter.

I think you may enjoy Neverwinter when it launches. Other than that I'm all out of suggestions.

How do you like DDO? I was thinking of giving it a try but it seems like the same old same old + its owned by Turbine who I dont wanna support.

Why don't you guys pick up a good RPG on the Steam sale. Sounds like you're bored of MMO's for the moment, so why not switch gears?

Your reasons for not playing EvE are fairly inaccurate. You don't need anywhere near a year to be able to PvP. You have plenty of options for PvP, even as a brand new player. You could join a corporation that holds pvp events. An example would be the Red vs Blue alliance, which holds set up battles against it's member corporations. I'm not a veteran myself, and I partake in exciting pvp every weak when my corp goes on low/null sec roams. I have only been playing a few months and have around 3 mill skill points. I've also gone into null sec alone, with frigates, and have had a blast. From your post, it really does sound like you need to give EvE another go. Let me know if you would like to get into a very helpful and friendly corporation.

My Steam library is pretty stacked up already with games from previous sales. Plus after being spoiled with games like Skyrim, Witcher, Fallout etc. its kinda hard to go back to these indie RPG titles. Besides I like the competivness, mechanics, and community that really only MMOs have, but if im not in the mood to play them I always have TF2, Civ 5 and sports games on my xbox to kill time.

DDO is a time killer atm, I like the grind and all that, it just feels clunky and im annoyed i cant do any of the new expansion yet. Oh, and telling hte OP HIS VERY OWN reasons for not liking EVE are innacurate...................well, i will be nice andjust say they are his reasons, not yours. I played EVE briefly and will never, ever even think of trying it again. That game is the very definition of a cesspool of inbred trolls and griefers who think they are God's gift to the gaming world.

Maybe you'll like The Secret World. I don't know if you want a fantasy-based setting only, but TSW's quests are probably something you haven't experienced much before, the Abilities and Skill systems are intresting, the whole "Secret Societies" thing is pretty sexy, the dungeons -from what i have experienced so far- are cool and i think it'll keep you busy for long. Also Funcom committed for montly updates -besides the regular hotfixes- with new content etc. I don't know, check it out, it's surely something different and you might like it. :)

I'd agree with the above two posters: EQ2, Vanguard (once it goes F2P), or TSW would be good games to try, given your requirements.

I notice you didnt mention PSO as big MMOs you played as a MMO vet. So I would suggest trying out Phantasy Star Online 2. It holds a lot of what you seem to be asking for.

    1. Minimal questing, its completely mission based. You have quests you can complete but questing as a whole is completely optional.

    2. Interesting Housing system as well as tons of small additions to game experience.

    3. Not WoW clone. SWTOR, LOTRO, TERA, GW2 have some variations but till follow theme park model pretty tightly. PSO2 really is as different from wow formula as you can get.

    4. No PVP =p

    5. Engauging combat, it feels a lot like Monster Hunter in a way, completely Action based. So if you enjoy TERA combat then you definitely like PSO2's

Game is till in its infantsy so end game, economy, and community is till up in the air. But it definitely is worth playing.

PSO2 is current official released and running on the Japanese servers, sense its F2P it definitely doesnt hurt making a account and trying it out. The game has a thriving english community. If not the game is slated to be released internationally early 2013.

I'm in the same boat as well and have recently picked up Final Fantasy V to experience a job / class system the way I like. Not enough MMOs out there use a decent job system (Except Eden Eternal, Ragnarok Online, FFXI and FFXIV) and so I've had to resort to single player JRPGs.

I have pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 though and played during the last beta. Whilst it's not as amazing as ArenaNet made it out to be, it is still a step in the right direction.

Vanguard seems to please the majority of longer term mmoers that are fed up with the corridor style thempark we see a lot these days. It definately gives off that nostaglic feeling we got from games like EQ, UO and AC. Some of the dungeons are actually pretty amazing. Even exploring some of the citys in the game is as amazing as exploring a well made dungeon, the gnome city stands out as a good example. The housing is extremely well done as well.. you have to build it first and can pretty much put any item anywhere you want in them.

With this going FTP soon, it's a good time to jump in and check it out because the population is about to go BOOM.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I doubt TSW is what an old school gamer is looking for.... Constant cutscenes and story driven MMOs aren't usually what they are looking for.......Facotr in that it costs a fortune too (50 + 15 to sub) and there are certainly tons of better options out there.

In the same boat as OP (and others), and did just what you proposed... Last weeks' summer sale I picked up a bunch of 'older' RPG's that I missed in the time I was playing MMO's and am having a blast with them (well, Fable, Old Chapters to start with), In the mean time I keep playing Vanguard and EQ2, both mostly for the good community on the servers I'm on.

    Darkfall when 2.0 launches

    Vanguard when it goes FTP

    or Planetside 2.

    All very fantastic MMOs.

EQ2 seems to suit your tastes on Antonia Bayle server which is RP.

You have 9 crafting professions to choose from Alchemist, armorer, carpenter, jeweler, sage, woodworker, weaponsmith, tailor and provisioner + sub trades transmuting, adorning and tinkering you can do all 3.

It has extensive housing what you can decorate and even has a house ranking leaderboards.Guild halls.

    Raiding & group dungeons.

You can upgrade your abilities by crafting so you can make your toon stronger than more casual players if its what you want.

A great and addictive collection system (for me anyway,I miss those ? shinies when I play other mmo's)

You can solo to max level pretty easily nowadays and if you find a good guild they will help you get gear. There are lots of good guilds on AB server. These things match what your looking for I think and there is way more aswell.Even though it is a theampark you can go to so many different places to level solo or grouped so it dosn't feel as on rails as some mmo's.

The War Z is making me VERY excited.

Im also going to try Planetside 2.

For us veteran MMO players I truly believe the future lies in persistent FPSMMO style games. The medieval theme and button/hotkey tab targeting has been done 1,000s of times. The above mentioned games offer a genre and style we are used to and love and have never really been done successfully.......yet.

I was going to suggest this as well. I have done two of the dungeons in TSW in easy mode and they were fun, 90% boss fights and no trash and good mechanics. I did a lot of Raids in AoC, and Funcom knows it's dungeon design and I expect they will add more good stuff here. You can probably do 90% of your leveling in dungeons if you want (repeating) or you can actually try the questing that's pretty darned good in my opinion. Oh, yeah, and the dungeons comes in three modes, normal (while you are questing), elite (for when you are done with the main story) and nightmare (for when you want a challenge).

Right now I would recommend The Secret World. But you have to be willing to play it for the story. Great story, it really will keep you on the edge of your seat for a while. It will at least keep you busy for the month until GW2.

The only downside I see in it right now is that you will run out of story after a while depending on how fast you go though it, but you will very likely enjoy it while it lasts. I did not expect to like it as much as I do. Also the character advancement design is very unique. There is nothing out quite like it right now.
