Guild Wars 2: The Asura Experience

I didn't like the Asura race from GW1, so I didn't expect to like them in GW2. If it weren't for curiousity over the personal storyline, I wouldn't have bothered. I did NOT expect to love them as much as I did. First off, Asura animations should win an award or something, they have so much personality just in their movements it almost makes the other races feel stiff by comparison. The haughtiness was toned down in my character just enough to make him likeable without taking away from the superior attitude. He reminded of Snaff from the books; over-reaching, but friendly. Their starting area was full of interesting stories and had me laughing constantly (Skritt IQ testing was great) and my personal storyline was phenomenal. I did the Infinity Sphere line, and it really had me on my toes. The end of that storyline at 19, I won't spoil, but I was gigglefitting at myself for more than one reason.

I'll definitely be making an Asura at launch. To be honest, I was a little disappointed in the Sylvari characters and storyline, they seemed a little cliche, and if Caithe's accent were any more forced she'd squeeze water from a stone. So far, though my starting character will be a human, I think the most interesting and well-done races are Charr (storyline was ~awesome~) and Asura.

I love them also, but I was hoping weap size didn't scale down so much with them... I have visions making a war char with a big 2-hander but that's not possible..

Oh well, slyvari it is then..

There was something deeply disturbing about playing an Asura Thief - every time I was knocked down, my character would cry out "why won't somebody help me?"  shut up, you whiny brat.  You're a lvl 30 thief, you've been defeated hundreds of times, have fought massive beasts, solved problems for entire civilizations... but you still whine about losing a bit of health.

And because I had a glass cannon build, I was getting knocked down *all the time*

Nope they jump as high and everything... bThe actual roblem there is with them is they are better than other races because they dodge furher... Im not nsure if that is intentional or not...

I was afraid for jumping to Vista points but everything went well. I was a gremlin with a helm, and it was very funny. top race :)

Arenanet has outdone themselves on Asura animations.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun the Asura are.

Now, I dont want anyone to think Im a hater, because I love GW2 however..

It would appear I am in the minority here, but Im just not feeling the Asura. Upto this BWE3 I was really looking forward to playing them and planned on making an Asura Mesmer but I just wasnt impressed. Not going to be making an Asura on release now.

The race themselves are great. The character creation is exactly what I was hoping, the animations are great and their stuck up attitude is perfect! THe VO is also top notch (gotta love Felicia Days voice acting)

The starting area however, I found to be incredibly dull. It really put me off. Just seemed like I was running around fixing strage problems created by mad scientists. There didnt seem to be any cohesion to the story, it didnt seem to be going in any particular direction, and I really just didnt get the whole inquisition krewe thing. It just didnt pull me in like the Nightmare Court did for the Sylvari, or what I have seen of the other races story. (Played upto level 12 Asura)

The architecture is great and looks exactly like it should do IMO but its a nightmare to get around anywhere - I found myself getting lost all the time - a problem that I didnt have in any of the other zones, and Rata Sum was just a real pain to get around.... I kept falling to my death too which kinda sucked.

Obviously the Asura are just not for me. Im gonna stick to my Charr Warrior main, and Human/Sylvari Ranger Alt

Do they dodge further though, or does it just look that way cos they are small? It looks like they run faster too, but they dont, its an optical illusion cos they are small.

FYI, being small wont be an advantage in PvP as the hitboxes for all the races are the same size ;)

After playing the Asura over the beta weekend, I cannot get myself to play anything else now :P.

There is a slight advantage if the person that is trying to attack you is a clicker. He/she would have a harder time using his mouse to select your Asura character :).

I think(but im not sure or have any links) that hitboxes = clickboxes

This hitbox is not really visible and he/she would try to click on the middle of the character itself. I guess they can just get used to using the tab button :P.

hehe you can always make one race and mix and match in different ways like you could play an asura and go to another area to level like the silven or char area and still use the personal storey initiation points in what ever city or "appropriate" leveling area your in.

um...no- please dont mention GW2in same sentence as wow- no need for this trash comparison.

no need togo backwards with design. Anet knows what they are doin.

a reason i havent looked into playin Tera= those weapons are unrealistic too big.

Asura were/are my favorite by far. I was going to roll a human at launch, but now I think I am going to have to roll an Asura.

  • RyukanRyukan Member UncommonPosts: 858

Asura's are butt ugly. Personal opinion of course but during chaacter creation I could not make an Asura I didn't think was creepy/ugly/gimpy looking no matter how much I played around with sliders and customization options.

Sylvari on the other hand can look pretty cool.

  • SvarcanumSvarcanum Member UncommonPosts: 425

I, like you, went in having hated all small races (except WoW goblins). But Asura really made a huuuge impression on me. The wonderfully crafted animations and their arrogance has ensured that my main will be an asura guardian. Well done ANet!

  • SvarcanumSvarcanum Member UncommonPosts: 425

Btw, all talk about hitboxes. The smallest asura char will have the exact size on their hitbox as the largest Norn. So you can potentially click select an asura without actually clicking it, but rathe clicking in the vicinity.

I never got to try the Azura during this last Beta, but I'm definitly sure that when the head start comes along, I'll make one. I think t would be cool to be an azuran engineer, since they're inventors, and you would be with a golemn companion, very helpful. But for actual class, Engineer is one of my favourites so far.

  • Eir_SEir_S Member UncommonPosts: 4,440

I mirror Mike's (previous) sentiments about the Asura, I just couldn't see playing one... but ANet did the unthinkable and made me want to roll one at launch.  Their animations are awesome and the voice acting and city structure of Rata Sum are extremely well done and draw you in much more than say, the Norn.

    Bravo.

I usually don't like playing the default midget race in fantasy games, however I found playing a Asura necromancer to be a lot of fun. The technology their society has created is everywhere and most importantly you get to immerse yourself in it, and actually use it.

I want to play one now (I didn't before) but they are ugly as hell!
