If you're looking to reserve your Guild Wars 2 character name, you'd better take care of it soon! Today on the official ArenaNet blog, the team announced a deadline of July 31st for name reservations.
Reserving your character name in Guild Wars 2 requires an active (recently logged in) Guild Wars 1 account. Simply create a character on your Guild Wars 1 account before July 31st and the name will be reserved for you for a limited time in Guild Wars 2:
We’re building our Guild Wars 2 name reservation list on July 31. We’re only reserving character names from active Guild Wars accounts, which is why you’ll need to log in at least once before we build the list in order to be considered an active Guild Wars player.
However, as we mentioned in a previous blog post, your Guild Wars character names will not be reserved indefinitely. You must create a Guild Wars 2 character with the same name as your Guild Wars character during the Headstart Access period or on launch day. Shortly after launch, we’ll free up all the unclaimed names for new Guild Wars 2 players to use.

Note that in GW1 you can only make names with 2 or more words. Single word names will be free for grabbing on release.

Nvm, totally missed where it said that you had to be logged in at least once in 2012. My friends' toon names are safe then They don't have to come back from holiday
This was announced long ago, this is just the announcement of the final deadline.
I misread. The start of the blog makes it look as if it starts now and ends on July 31st.
....wait what if the name is already taken?
Uhh... what?
just FYI - you can do 3 names in GW2
Prepare for: Gandalf Legolas Gollum
where do you login to do this?
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
Same question here. I don't understand how to do this.
i havent figured it out. but it appears to only be for gw1 character names. while I have gw1 (had) .. meh .. who wants to reinstall something you arent really into playing anymore?

You just login to GW to reserve your name.
If you don't have it installed I wouldn't really worry about it unless you have a name that you really want.
It's extremely easy. Your Guild Wars 2 code will be applied to your existing Guild Wars 1 account, so you'll use the same account details to log into Guild Wars 2 as you do Guild Wars 1. Thus log into your Guild Wars 1 account before 31 July and your existing character names will be reserved. If you'd like to reserve a different name, create a new character before 31 July. Then log into your Guild Wars 2 account in the headstart/launch day period and you'll be able to exclusively use those names that have been reserved for a period.
not very understand this, will ask other colleagues help

Be warned that if you haven't linked accounts it's not going to work. I didn't (it didn't work for me when I tried in BWE1) and Anet's response so far has been: "We don't have a system in place to link them currently, we'll keep you updated."
I bought gw1 2 weeks ago and took me hours to choose a stupid name cause all names are taken allready game has been out since 2005 way to go arena
While I can see your point, imagine if you've been a faithful GW1 player and the developer says they're making a new game and all the years of investment you've made in your character will be meaningless. Dis-loyalty to your current fanbase is worse IMHO. At least there is the Hall of Monuments and Name reservation. It's not much, but better than nothing.
If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.
Why is this bad news @Adelbern?
Because names are taken for one day past release? Well, take that name a day later, it's only 4/3/1 day/s (prepurchase, preorder, release)
Or because your names aren't reserved for longer? Would lead to people having the problem you had two weeks ago, but not after 7 years, but right after release.

And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll

And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
that "limited time" ends 08/28

oh its definitely p2w now :P
GW1 names are all taken by now cause i bought GW1 and its impossible to choose a name. Had to go with idiotic name to play.
GW2 is a new game and as new game I want to choose a nice name not be able to cause GW1 players have them reserved sounds very shitty. Some idiots here started to say ironic shit about this like im not going to play the game cause of name but thats not the case i will still play but would be nice to have the name i want vs sdfhtyh name.
Yeah, but the names are only reserved for one day after release, so you only have to wait a maximum of 4 days if you pre-purchased. It's not like you woulld have to wait a month or a year or something.
This already led to quite some anger at ArenaNet promising to reserver your names you used for years, and then it's only one day, which is literally nothing, especially with the late announcement of the release date, leading to many people being on holiday, as they had to choose before knowing the release.
Imagine making up a nice name, and someone else takes it because he thought it was cool when he saw your char in GW, and you can't be there for the release. Maybe you even make it before the end of the month - but too late.
The system ArenaNet uses is basically just so they kept their promise for name reservation and really favors new people.

keep in mind that while GW1 has every player on the same server, GW2 has multiple. Also, just because a particular name was taken whenever it was taken on GW1 does not mean that particular player is even playing GW2 at launch or at all. Not every single one of the GW1 names will be unavailable on GW2. In fact, I would bet good money that you will be just fine getting whatever name you want come launch.
not to mention the fact that GW2 allows 1 word names (minimum 3 characters long) whereas GW1 does not so any 1 word name you might come up with will be free for the taking (if you are fast/lucky enough I guess)
Cool what you just explained makes sense now release that behemoth game allready :P
