This naming system is attrocious. Takes way too long to find some subpar mashup of letters to get thru the system. Anyone else having this kind of issue?
Try putting in double letters in a name or make a S into a Z things like that or use the ' in your name for example Kol'Mok things like this usualy work.
I was pretty disappointed with the naming system in TSW. Forcing three names is awkward in many cases, not to mention the issue you raise about seemingly every nickname being taken.
For me personally, I used Zooce for many games and forums and have never found issue with it being taken. It was unavailable during the TSW closed beta, and again unavailable at launch. I had to settle for Zouce. The real kicker was checking the chronicle site, there is no one using Zooce. I find it somewhat ridiculous that Funcom proactively blocked it from being used.
It was possible to reserve names if you pre-ordered the game.
Given the single-server tech that Funcom uses, the chances of getting your exact name are less than in other games, where each server has it's unique name pool. But when those unique servers are merged later due to declining population, the name conflicts often result in people having to change the names of their transferred characters.
Single-server tech has many benefits for the players, but name availability will be restricted, because your name has to be unique throughout the entire playerbase of the game.
I see Arenanet are allowing GW1 players to transfer their names to GW2, so no doubt there will be new players logging into headstart in GW2 who will also find their names taken already.
Well its harder to find a name than in other MMOS as every single player can play toghether due to the singel server tech. Means that every TSW player has to have a unique name.
Cant be an aceundor on 8 different servers... T
There can be only one..

It is the same problem gmail and the likes suffer, if the name is the identifier for an account/character, it needs to be unique and the larger the pool, the less change you have of getting your choice.
GW2 does it even weirder, it gives everyone with the same name a number behind their name. Got to love that, someone copies my name, I get a number...
Personally, I think MMO's need to grow up.
Give each account a unique number similar so ID number in real life. That is your unique identifier. Your name/nickname/whatever, can be what you want, within the constraints of taste and the universe.
When you chat, you see a color hash for that name, so you know if you are chatting to moron@12345 or moron@67890
When you friend or ignore someone, you do it on the account. You can still contact people on alts, and assholes will be ignored/banned on all their avatars.
And every can have their name, just have to deal with minor confusion just as in real life when people have the same name and people will just sort it out themselves.

Quite a few people reserver more than one name, so it's very unlikely it's "blocked" by FC, and very likely it's reserved but still unused.
Additional name reservations cost 10$ and i believe the Grand Master Pack grants an additional one, or something.

They could have gone with a unique combination of the 3 names your character has.

Yes, they could have. But then you'd have to type that combination every time you wanted to send a player a /tell or an ingame email. I'd rather type "n00b2547" than "Thorbrand_Giantkiller_McPherson" if I want to send someone a quick message.
What's the point of having a name if you appear in chat as a hash tag ? Nobody is going to be happy living their life ingame as Nightstalker#231 if they wanted to be "Nightstalker". Besides, adding random numbers after your name is already possible if you want to do it.

In chat you appear as your name but with a hash-tag beside it or as a mouse over. So, if in chat I see a "Jan": talking, I can just respond but if I want to be certain that is "Jan" from guild X I played with before, I look at the hash-tag.
Then people can change their nick/name, have the same one and still be indentifiable.
The alternative is doing what GW2 is doing and giving everyone a number beside their name, which can be considered to be a hash to make your name unique.
It ain't pefect, in real life we can deal rather easily with multiple names because we got more context, but in online chat something better is needed.
And Red1 Red2 Red-3 ain't it :P
Making the entire combination of names unique would explode chat, some people have rather long ones. They would also be hell to type in an email.
Maybe it is just time some MMO company did a drastic improvement on the whole chat/im/mail system. Something at least on par with IRC, where you can use a login on most servers to proof your nick belongs to you.

GW2 gives a hash tag to your account name, not your character names. It has an account-based friends list and account-based guilds, which is why you'll be adding Josh.2819 to your friends list, but playing with his character, Alaya Sexysaladgirl.
I think TSW's problem is that only the nickname has to be unique. Combined with a non-fantasy setting, it's a bit limiting. Combining the three fields into a single unique field would almost eliminate this issue.
I don't have an issue with the naming in TSW. I ended up using a number in my nickname. I will admit to having more difficulty thinking up a name since it takes place in the "real" world though. I couldn't just think up a random name like "rathgar urgnok" (or some such name) like in a fantasy based MMO.
Champion Online has a system whereby you can have any visible (i.e. over your head and in chat) name you want, your "true" identifier is another, unique name (can be anything) that's tied to your email address, that can be hidden or revealed in chat by anybody who's interested.
Sometimes you get 2 or more Sephiroths, but nobody really cares.
It's more important to have your character feel "right" to you, than to feel like you're the only person with that name on the server.
Well its harder to find a name than in other MMOS as every single player can play toghether due to the singel server tech. Means that every TSW player has to have a unique name.
I thought nobody was playing TSW? huh....guess there are people playing after all.
Oh and the three naming thing isn't weird. You have a first name, last name and a code name/nickname in the middle.
No, but it's stupid. They keyed the 'nickname' to be the data base name. The person who thought of that should be fired...
They had a real opportunity to give people some serious name customization. Like Guild Wars or Eve Online where you can have first/surname characters. But they went with the far more limiting single-name keyed off of your 'nickname.' Just dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.
And it's not like they didn't do a lot of things right. But this was four-steps back in MMO design.

Gotta think outside the box.

Use a - and combine two words. I have my 3rd character slot empty, and I know I'll most likely have to use that - to get by if I'm going to use it.
Whats wrong withthe naming system?
First and last names can be whatever you like duplicates are allowed.. the nickname is like well your name on any other MMORPG..

An expected problem and a simple trade off.

You can use a "-" as well as numbers.
Really not hard at all... as a matter of fact compared to most games that dont allow the dash or numbers it quite a bit easier.
Not to mention theres no need to have 8 alts in TSW

Let me guess....Sephiroth, PWNED, Pvpnis and the likes were already snagged?

I love that kind of system.
