Is Everquest Next a dead project?

MidniteHowlMidniteHowl Member UncommonPosts: 149

I'm really craving a new EQ game. I know SOE announced awhile back that they were working on EQ Next. To be honest, I'm not sure if that's the EQ I'm looking for. It's been rumored that it'll be done in the same flavor as Free Realms. If that's the case, no thanks! I did a quick Google search for it and basically there's no new news about it. So is it dead?

EQ1 had me hooked for 3 years and I only quit playing because at the time real life stuff just wasn't allowing video game time. But now I have time and kinda miss the old EQ, but I find it kind of hard to go back to it after so much time has passed since my last playing of it. Not only that but I also feel the game is kinda dated now. What I would ultimately like to see is a updated version of the original EQ. You know, better graphics and such. But keep most of the original gameplay mechanics. Stuff like corpse runs were actually fun to me. The corpse recovery sometimes required help from others which really helped the whole social aspect of the game. Or even mobs that would chase you all the way to a zone line was fun. It added an element of danger and consequences for messing with certain mobs.

I miss the variety of races and classes, and various buffs that each provided. People actually sought out those buffs and were willing to pay for them because they actually helped their game unlike most of today's MMO buffs. In today's games you only really need those buffs for dungeon runs. Let's not forget about other helpful skills that also helped the social aspect like wizard teleports. How did today's MMO games get away from social interactions like these? It's sad really! Even more sad is that I've played today's games and have somehow also fallen into the whole anti-social thing to! I don't want to be that way but that's how current games made it.

I also want to mention 1 more EQ thing I liked. That would be the non-instancing of dungeons. It was cool to just run into a dungeon and see other people there. So what if you had to wait for respawns? At least seeing other people there made it feel like a real breathing world!

If there ever was an EQ remake like this, I think the only thing I would like to see added that current games use is a quest log or journal. The original EQ just kinda let you run around all willy-nilly with no real objective behind it. Granted there were some quests there but you'd better write down the info or do some online research to figure them out!

What do you all think? Maybe if a lot people agree with this we should consider this a petition for a new EQ and forward it on to SOE! LOL

P.S. : sorry for the wall of text. I did this on my phone and I had it in paragraphs but it didn't show that way once it was posted !

P.S.S: New patch notes: fixed wall of text on MidniteHowl posts, now easier to read with paragraphs!

From what I read about it early on it sounded like it was going the social game route.

    I highly doubt it.

The three 'big' next-gen MMOs that haven't been announced are Turbine's, EQNext, and Blizzard's Titan.    I would guess that they are all into active development now.   The thing is that rethinking MMOs from scratch takes times, and these are all companies that are making enough money that they can afford very long development cycles.

You might have to wait a while, but I doubt they are dead.

Well, to be fair, he did say this at the end:

Doubt it's dead, but it has been awhile I think since there was any news.

This is the latest thing I could find regarding it, so hopefully we'll get some news towards the end of the year.

both SOE and Blizzard are keeping their projects in the dark

Nadia posted in this thread with links that SOE is hiring for EQ Next.

I might suggest Vanguard for the interim. The f2p announcement alone has made it a much more livable place. There are many performance improvements - though I won't lie, it's still the king of wierdness.

Anyway, I was craving a world to live in again where the journey was the game, and VG is working for me. Just be bold and remember those social networking skills from old eq and be prepared to start sending tells and being patient while you form a group to do something. But even if not, they're reworking the questlines to give a 1-55 soloable route. Be ware, your gear will suffer as well as missing out on the best dungeons and group dynamics I've ever experienced.

EQ3/Next will probably have many things in common with VG too, so there's a possibility you would be getting a taste of what is to come.

It is not dead yet, but I would bet the guys at soe are a bit worried.

For the past couple of years it has been talked about at fan faire.  This year SOE changed the name to SOE live.  EQ-Next(eq3) is not on the agenda.  I asked Danica why this was.  I got a response saying that it was too early in the games life to be giving out information??  So I was like what kind of answer is that.  I sent a few pm's to Greg Spence (rothgar) who left eq2 to go go head up the project with SJ (smokejumper) Georgeson.   I never got a reply from greg but his blogspot shows he is working on the project.

So the question is, what is going on, did they stop what they were working on and decided to scrap it and start over?  This is what I believed happened.

What we did know, is it was going to be cross platform like dcuo was, and it was going to use the same engine, and it was going to be free to play with a cash shop.  We even seen like 8 screen shots.  However the screen shots are 1.8 months old, and nothing new has been leaked out.  There is some speculation they are going with the planet-side engine now instead of the dcuo engine like they were planing 2 years ago.

So I think they are going to wait until planet-side too rolls out and check the barometer then.  I know they are not going to release it with the dcuo engine, they don't want and can not afford another epic fail, in fact they canceled two project they were working on that was going to use the dcuo engine.

The project is not dead, but they sure are being very secretive about it.  All one can hope is that at soe live this year they will release us some information about what is going on.  I will say Greg has been very quite about it, but we know he still works for soe and is still last we heard head of the dev team reporting right to SJ.

There, short of getting links from facebook, that is all the info I have to share.  It is up to you to look at facebook and the forums to find the rest, I just don't have all night to go find those links.

We may be thinking of different things, but my impression was it was going the F2P route.

Sorry but if you would have skimmed over the whole thing you would see my apology and reason why it came out that way. Not sure why it's not holding my paragraph format when posting from my phone. I realize it's hard to read. I'll try to fix it when I get home.

Why spend the the time and money and take the risk of developing a completely new mmorpg game mechanic when people shun even the slitest variation off the wow-park path?

Why take those risks when dropping a game that combines two unique games from the 90's will net you millions of box sales then hundreds of thousands of subs after?

Its been proven by your wallet and millions of others.

Yeah i see the next step in the trend of reinventing old mechanics going to social game route...it will make use of face book and all that crap and you can probably tweet a raid boss to death or whatever...yay....

Remember what EQ did was unique at the time, what anarchy online did was unique...hell they even brought instancing and dynamic events onto the scene despite people hate their use today...daoc did something totally unique.

Now its just one mesh of instances and DE from AO..PVE and group mechanics from EQ and pvp from DAOC...dumbed down made simple and with a high gloss coat of paint on it.  Why?  Because people paid them to do it.

Its so sad that currently theres a trend to reinvent the sandbox, or at least make a sandbox...and people dont even want that variety of the older mechanics they just want the unholy alliance of EQ+AO+DAOC aka the wow-park.

So make sure you preorder GW2 and any other game that claims to reinvent the industry because we all know exactly what your buying...more of the wow-parks.

I read someplace that they plan to use the new engine that is being made for PlanetSide 2.  This is why they are pouring so much of their resources into PS2.

not speculation, SOE announced last summer 2011: EQ3 is using same engine as PS2

regarding old screenshots, this was announced last month by Smokejumper

Screens you saw from a couple years ago are completely obsolete now and are not pertinent to the current game at all

good info I had missed the one news from smokejumper funny that I missed that on eq2wire, I guess I been on vacation for a while and missed that post on the wire.

Kind of explains why they are not releasing any new info as they had a total redesign of the product.

Since EQNext is going to offer only f2p / freemium servers and game experience then it is as good as dead for me.

Same as 90% or more upcoming mmorpg's I think.

Well I since 90% of mmorpg's since 2005 are crap independently of business models anyways so no big loss I guess.

I was going to say the same thing. It sounds like most of want you want is already in vanguard. The variety of races and classes, meaningful buffs, corpse runs, non instances dungeons, Etc. They're finally giving the game some much needed attention, and with the up coming free to play move, it should be recieveing a nice shot in the arm of players. I would be playing now myself if they hadn't removed the pvp server.

These people who think a game would get developed in just a couple of months are so funny.

Game development is about 5 years, on average.

Eq Next was confirmed in August of 2009. It's been just about 3 years. I missed where someone said a couple months.
