I'll be playing Mists of Pandaria for a while at least, but I can't say I have any desire to participate in the pet battles.

It's not instanced. I could have made that more clear. The pet battle finder might be, but you can randomly challenge anyone you see to a pet battle, and it'll take place right there in the wide open world with everything else going on around you.

There are tons of people who will play this. Hell, I am 26 and have Pokemon on my droid and play it sometimes. People will play it for the achievements alone.

What old school Wow players wanted was.. the return of the of Burning Legion and Sargeras to azeroth. also the next hero class like demon hunter, which could have allowed illidan to return in some way to help defeat sargeras and his legion for good. the planet Xoroth so we could explore Nathrezim home world. could have been vast with tons of dungeons open raids,PVP,exploration galore.

Instead we get a bunch childish assed padarens whom even though they are in lore are just a another way to lasso in the younger players who love kung-fu panda and of course the complete dumbing down of the talent tree's

So Wow is dead for people like me who started in beta and played for many years. we got promised housing in 2004 or some guild halls and we never heard about again ever. we never got the second hero class. we never finished off the burning legion or seen the Titans return.

    Sad Really.

Hear Hear TBC was the best xpac for WoW ever. Kara or BT was the best Raids ever. I remember going for 12 hrs or longer When I first started to raid Kara and then BT do todays WoW players even know what it means to get attuned to a raid? No and they never will.

Oh noes, Blizzard is adding a bunch of optional (fun) time sinks along with new progression and reigniting the Horde vs Alliance flame on top of any amazingly polished game.

Clearly MoP will destroy Blizzard for good.

This is one of the big reasons why WoW is my favorite MMO. There are so many little things to do that other games cannot match. In MoP you can go fishing and even win awesome rare items in fishing tournaments, fly around the world exploring as an archaeologist, collect and battle pets, own a farm and raise your own crops, which you can then harvest use to become a master chef!

Aside from WoW simply being more fun than other MMO's, it also feels more like a world than them too.

wow is the king of mmos for a reason...the only wow killer will be blizzard and their fans. After seeing their fans eat them alive though for diablo 3 it shows just how sharp and dangerous the teeth of the beast that will slaughter wow really is.I am not a wow hater, i love the game for what it is and sometimes i play it..but i do hate what it has done to the world of mmos with a passion.

What specifically don't you like about modern mmo's?  WoW brought MMOs to the mainstream and out of the nerdy niche.  I find WoW to be a blessing and huge step forward for online gaming.  Remember, 10 years ago the MMO market was tiny and had few options, make sure you're not just jaded instead of blaming 1 game...

One question, what other options do you have? Blizzard knows the answer and its not a freaking video game. In fact the dumbing down of world of warcraft is a responsibility they are taking on thier own shoulders, they are trying to minimize thier footprint that they so deeply created in this culture filled with people suffering from Peter Pan Syndrome - look it up - then look in the mirror!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would just like to point out if you go on the wow forums and search "Death of wow" there are over 25,000 replies going back 3 years.

Not sure if this is a response to my post....

If you're asking about options I'd sugget you scroll up and browse through an entire website dedicated to mmo's....

Jeez people are so bitter and so Hell Bent on the death of this game, it's kind of goofy how much junk it gets yet it's still here.  I have never understood why people blame WoW for the industry, they made a lot of money and a great deal of incompetent developers tried to rip it off, this isn't new to the industry.

You want WoW to die? Ignore it, don't discuss it with friends, don't even click links to articles,  a gaming news website won't cover it if it's not going to get views. I have a better idea, find a game that suits you, if you can't maybe you just don't like MMOs anymore, peoples tastes do change.

I probably won't bother buying the expansion, I am on the fence about it but I will give them the benefit of the doubt before I throw them under a bus.

EDIT: Jeez I hate the way this formats on my machine I have to butcher it to make readable even then its a 50/50 if I do it right.

People, lighten up. Looks cheesy but fun. After all, and please don't stab me for saying this, but WoW IS just a game. Haven't gone back to WoW in years and I doubt I ever will but I can appreciate taking a useless part of the game and turning it into something entertaining. Gimmick or not, good on you Blizz.

Pet battles are pretty awesome, No one still does the mount combat game anymore because it was for one area in one zone.. thats all! This can be everywhere!

Though I'm not here to convince the hipsters and haters to play, WoW will be fine with out them. I plan on playing both WoW and GW2 no need for all the hate. This expansion looks great and I can't wait for it to drop!

I have the same sentiments. Pet Battles is a very fleshed out mini-game, that does have a smallish amount of depth to it (aka quality of wild pets you find from poor to epic). I wasted two hours of time in MoP beta in the blink of an eye playing the pet battles. It's an excellent time waster, additionally, it'll be another source of addiction to the collector types.

I too will play MoP and GW2 at the same time. I have raiding, pet battles, and scenarios in WoW. I'll get my explorer itch scratched by GW2. I'll most likely pvp in GW2 more than WoW, as I like the GW2 combat system better.

So, we could go on and on rather pointlessly about the recently announced Pandaria launch date. But we already did that here. So instead, in this edition of the WoW Factor, I’d like to offer a few thoughts on the recently added Pet Battle System to the beta for Blizzard’s latest Azerothian expansion.  In short? It’s really quite the Pokémon meets WoW addition you’d expect it to be. But that’s not really a bad thing. In an MMORPG that has come to favor the “game” part of the acronym more than the RP, I’ve actually found the pet battle system to be an interesting alternate form of progression and fun to be had in Warcraft.

Read more of Bill Murphy's The WoW Factor: Pokémon? Yes, But It’s Fun.

As an ex-wow player (jan '05 - feb '12) I can't overstate how insulting the "Kung Fu panda & Pokemon" expansion is. MoP is the best that Blizzard could do?? MoP!! I mean really?? *sigh...

My wife and I quit early in '12 and half our Guild has now quit. I have pre-purchased GW2 and so far I can see Tyria being my new mmo-home.

My thoughts on MoP: Kung Fu Panda & Pokemon definitely not for me or my wife. To those that stay in WOW see ya! To those that come over to GW2... see ya on August 25th! :-)

    Cheers!

kung fu panda?? kung fu panda is a movie that came out on 2008. pandaren came in warcraft universe 1st on 2003 warcraft 3 expansion "the frozen throne". chen stormstrout was a key player in horde storyline that ultimately formed today's orgrimmar, so it was no joke frm blizzard's part either. i don't understand why ppl calling MoP the kung fu panda? so many ppl come to play an mmorpg without knowledge of game lore and game world(including the rpg books). u shud just play farmville in facebook with ur wife becos u will find somthin similar in gw2 soon enough to call it childish and then start qq. we don't need pp like u in gw2 or in any other mmog.

I always said i was not interested in playing the pokemon battles in MoP..... after so much thinking about it and looking on the internet and all that jazz i came to my own conclusion. . The combat is a turn based pet battle similar to pokemon battle pets system. There are no pokemons in MoP.... it only uses the same turn based battle pet system as pokemon games..... ive seen many retarded people say "WoW turned into pokemon!!!", show me the pokemons in WoW then ill believe it. Just because the real pokemon games have that combat system doesnt mean MoP is pokemon And by the way, pokemon didnt invent turn based battles... just sayin. I changed my mind and i will actually have fun watching my pet fight others.

exactly!!!... "non-combat" pets were too useless to even bother summoning them..... and there are too many of them to have them sitting around doing nothing. I hope Blizzard adds a betting system to place bets on pet battles.

there are free pokimon simulators on the internet which are both popular and free and allow for  real ppl vs real ppl  so why on earth pay 40$+15$ per month for a second hand pokimon style pvp that is most likely super watered down

I played WoW for over six years, and in all that time, no one ever seemed to indicate that what the game was missing was Pokemon.

We wanted more regular content updates (i.e. raids and dungeons) and a guild hall. We never got it, but that's what we wanted.

I don't know where this idea came from or who the target audience is.

    But yeah, pokemon.

    "Loading screens" are not "instances".
Your personal efforts to troll any game will not, in fact, impact the success or failure of said game.

Heh, I'm actually surprised nobody in this thread (at a quick glance) has brought up that Guild Wars (the original one) has had something nearly identical since 2007 in the form of Polymock. Granted, it never really became popular, and I can certainly see why.

IF it's made engaging and fun, then why not I guess. More variety on ways to spend time can't be bad, right?

I'm not terribly surprised that no one has brought up Polymock.  For one it never was one of the games more popular minigames as the game engine wasn't built to fully support it.  Secondly, Polymock was never a full blown Pokemon rip as WoW's pet battles are (ex. no capturing pets in the wild or even training them).

What I would be completely surprised by is if once the GW2 version of Polymock is revealed, no one claims it's a rip off of WoW's pet battle system even though Polymock was in the original game back in 2007.
