Do You Want Class Subforums?

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Hi guys,

Community member MMOExposed suggested we open class subforums here in the GW2 boards so you guys can theorycraft and discuss each class in its own forum. If we did this, do you think you would actually use these subforums? Is this something you'd like to see?

Pros/Cons as I see them:

Pros:

+Diffuses general discussion; less clutter

+Home for each user's class of choice to find all sorts of information and discussion specific to that class

Cons:

-If users do not use these forums (i.e. continue to post class specific threads in General), additional moderator work required to move threads to appropriate forums.

Please respond with your feedback!

Also, poll attached!

It would be nice, this is the only site I visit for GW2 info. :)

Are there any other games that have class sub forums?
  • TokkenTokken Member EpicPosts: 3,648

No, I think the Orig. GW2 Forums will have them and should be good enough.

i dont think they would get used much. it's not a bad idea but, the threads on this site tend to cover broader topics.

I guess it will keep me occupied for a month before GW2 launches, but i doubt ill be using this forums about class informations once GW2 launches (no offense). Honestly its all up to the mods if they prefer having the additional work, because we all know how much QQ will be on it.

I voted yes, but i now actually wish i voted no because i will feel bad for the mods.

No. Save it for the official forum. Class/profession sub-forums tend to attract a lot of drama, trolling and baiting. The GW2 community here is generally of high caliber, no need to attract disruptive elements.

    I voted no.

I doubt there will be critical mass for the subforums to have any real substance to them. As others have stated the official forums will better serve that crowd, and I doubt the general forum will become so overcrowded with class discussions that it would be unbearable.

voted yes since itll be easier to find info about classes instead of going to the general tab which is already over spammed

  • ShadanwolfShadanwolf Member UncommonPosts: 2,392

I voted yes. I will be going to a class specific site to better develope my character. You can have one here and people will be more inclined to stay at this site..or not have one and people like me...will go somewhere else.

Something to think about. People who are into GW2..  they will be less interested in other game information/news.There will be NO reason...for them... to come to this site.

  • LethalJaxxLethalJaxx Member Posts: 105

No. Those who seek class specific knowledge will find mostly unfounded replies by casuals and beginners on a general site like this. Or even more unfounded replies that start with "I haven't played the game but i believe...". Those who have delved deep into the game and mechanics will be hanging around in the official forums for discussion on this. So, if only to guide people away from uninformative replies, i'd say don't add class subforums.

I don't think this section gets enough traffic to warrant class subforums.  You'd end up with a couple threads and that's about it.

When the game releases the official forums will be back up and that's where you'll see most of the technical discussion (and they have class forums there).

Then this forum will be mainly for speculation about the game and general discussion, much like the forums here for other released games.

I have to agree with what others have said.  This community is more about general information, rather than the nuts and bolts of a game.  I also question how often GW2 people will be coming to the site after GW2 releases.

    i lol'd.

To be honest, no. I'll probably use the official game's class forums, because you can get developer feedback and (no offense to this site) a larger base of players to discuss mechanics with.

  • QSatuQSatu Member UncommonPosts: 1,796

I don't think it's needed. If you want to add something you could add 1 class sub forum to discuss everything about classes but having sub forum for each class would be a waste imo.

What you will see in sub forums of mmo's are always the general threads of:

    BUFF ME IAM UNDERPOWERED

and other classes comming to other sub forums saying:

CAN YOU NURF THE FECKING ELEMENTALIST PLS ? FECKING OVERPWERD NERF NERF NERF

What i noticed in GW versus other mmo's is that Arenanet plays their own game, and they wplay it at high levels.

They understand their classes and know whats OP or UP, they know wich weapons to use and when to use it.

Compare this to lets say WoW ?

Hunter in Battlegrounds - Brutal range class

Hunter in Arena - only 1% will make it to the top.

Hunter Receive's a buff - MOST OP class in Arena and BG

Hunter receives a nerf - Not playable for 8 months or the next expansion in Arena or Battlgrounds.

Frost Mage is OP since the start of Cataclysm, and only received buffs....

The diffrence between Anet and Blizzard in their class balance is pfenomenal, as if Blizzard dont have any clue how to balance their own game.

So to have a sub forum for the sake of a sub forum is not needed as it will bring tears of scrubs more then anything.

Not really. Most folks will probably be using the official forums, or at the very least GW2Guru

"For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast,
And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed:
And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill,
And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!"

If you want to add subforums, put only classes is pointless. I think is much more usefull subforums wich really clasify the game. For example PvE, PvP, Guides, Classes and something else. By doing that you have much more organization than just choosing "ranger, guardian, necromancer...." and with less subforums. Well, that's my opinion.

Absolutely, this site needs more GW2 daily threads........

It all depends on weither there are sub-forums for classes on the GW2 site or not. As such i would wait till either we get word, or the game launches. I don't think that making a sub-forum just for class-based threads is a good idea if there is already going to be a place for it like offical forums, as it will divide the info up between two places. To me not wanting to go to the offical site forums to chat about classes in a forum that is deticated to that single game an classes is not enouph reason to have them somewhere else. What can you do here that you can not do there when talking about classes? Also if it is to evade the scrubs or trolls that will be on the GW2 forums like all others it is still not enouph, as you will have trolls an such here to deal with. Wait till release or get info from GW2 if they will be hosting class forums  on there site first, if so the players should be using those forums for that activity, not looking to create a seperate place that the devs or mods of GW2 can not monitor what is being said or disgussed in them to deal with any isseues being brought up or found. Always had an issue with off-site class-forums as you can hide info, and bugs or such from the people on the main forum to exploit them. I could see it work if the GW2 devs an mods checked the class forums here for issues that are not brought up on the main forum, but that is making more work for them an so maybe the mobs here reporting any issues or new developements, an even ideas back t the gw 2 people might work though.

I personally probably wouldn't use them.  I've never come to mmorpg.com to talk strategy and theorycrafting, especially when there are official forums built specifically to do that, but that doesn't necessarily mean others wouldn't.

I think this is why we're going to experiment with these. Just because we haven't done it before doesn't mean we shouldn't try to cultivate that sort of discussion. I don't think we should try to keep discussions focused to generalized topics. Others have mentioned that one can do all this on other forums, including the official forums, but the same can be said for any discussion for any game. We're our own community here and I'd like to see if we can spark some specific discussion by giving people a place to discuss professions, builds, etc.

Absolutely yes IF class sub-forums arent on the GW2 site.  I still play PWI and the class subforums are very useful.  They include stickied guides and a forum specific search engine.  So for example you could go to the 'seeker' forum and search 'genie' and you will get results for genies about seekers as opposed to getting non-specific answers about all classes.
  • KostKost Member CommonPosts: 1,975

My vote is no, it's extra hassle for the Mod staff when they have a full enough plate already.

There are plenty of actual GW2 fansites where users can go for class discussions, there is absolutely no need for it here too.

  • eye_meye_m Member UncommonPosts: 3,317
I would enjoy getting to check out various threads about different classes within GW2 without having to search through a quarter mile of general discussion threads.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
