Looking for a good rts/4x with multiplayer

Im very new to rts, and im wondering if I should try 4x games too.

I bought Dawn of war 1 a few years ago but then thq dropped support for it like a rock when the sequel game out.

I want something that has., and will have a very healthy multiplayer population.

I also enjoy base building.

Are 4x like rts but more complicated?

I want something somewhat new if possible.

Can anyone make some reccomendations please?

    KKND or KKND2  if you can get it to work

    not new though, other than that one I'm not a big RTS fan

    Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is a really good game.

     

    4x games depend more on strategic choices than their more contemporary RTS counterparts, which tend to focus on tactical choices.

    Now with 57.3% more flames!

    If you're looking for multiplayer strategy games my favorite is the Men of War series. These are tactical WWII strategy games that aim for 'realism' (I use that term loosely) -- such as bullet trajectory, armor penetration, historical accuracies with weapons/vehicles, etc.  Very brutal and unforgiving games.

    I decided I want a 4x game with a very helthy online community,

    I am leaning towards CIV 5 , and advice on it?
