Failed p2p. Yet it lasted 7 years before it went f2p? Are you smoking something? It was a really, really well liked game by it's fanbase, which wasn't small, until it went F2P, which even then each of the servers had something like 1700 logged in at all times. Which is enough to run the game at least.

7 years before switching over is dam impressive.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
L2 has 2 big problems that interfear with players base during this years:
Bots: They really interfear with players gameplay and game experience. In 2006 i leave L2 because they really ruin my game experience. Like me im sure was alot more ppl during this years that at some point quit because of them.
Private Servers: A NCSoft problem but also means less ppl on official servers and everyone knows that any mmo can only be fun with at least medium population, and L2 can only be fun with high population on servers.
Even with this big problems L2 allways have a solid player base all this years.
And now L2 is tottaly F2P and that means more ppl playing on servers. Alot of them come from private servers. Alot of ppl playing on private servers suport them with some donations, now they play official and "donations" goes to NCSoft. And servers are alive with full of players.
About Bots, at least untill lvl 87 i havent had any problems related with them. No idea at higher lvls.
I know this tittle thread is trolling, but just want to point that this change was a good one to L2, imo.
#2. Lineage II had one of the largest customer bases of any online game EVER.
#3. Lineage is considered one of the grandfathers of the mmo genre, it is respected, it is looked at as a shining example of what old school mmos were.
Originally posted by Stalkerous Someone JUST realized that L2 went F2P, when it's been months. AION is the one that recently went F2P as well. Both of the games are okay. Going F2P never=FAIL, it's actually a big WIN for the company since they have in game item shops and people spend more than $15 a months on the games now due to the in game item shops.
I disgree with your statement. Aion DID fail and, and I say that having played it a lot and having some affection for the game.
It won (at launch), then failed (the months following), then won (the F2P launch), and, in the EU anyhow, is now failing again...
If anything, the game only really goes to prove that although F2P may get you an influx of new players at the start, unless you have the game in place they won't stick around either.
because you know why?
A broken game remains a broken game, no matter what the revenue model.
It didn't fail it went for along time, reached the end of it's life, then they stick it on f2p to get some of those scam bucks. Whereas games used to just die, they are now kept on life support with f2p mugs being nickle and dimed.

Good old L2 I will never have as much fun with any game as I had with this one, pvping for hours while waiting for baium, antharas or even valakas to spawn.

Indeed it will Mannish. Partly because of the HUGE amount of 'private servers' out there, and partly because you and me supported the official servers for years.
Tried it a while back. Looked great, even ran pretty well. I just had too much problem with the controls. Compared to conventional controls, it felt awkward.

P2W does mean failure, but it doesn't have to mean the game failed. It just means the game has failed to be profitable as a subscription service. We also need to remember that Lineage has failed in the west, but was a huge success in the east. I guess it really depends what perspective a person takes.
IMHO, I wouldn't consider the game a failure as it hase been around a long time and held good subscriber numbers in the east.

Agree^^
Word. Not only did it NOT fail, but shifting the business model to support how players want to pay for their entertainment is a great step towards another successful 7 years of L2.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre

P2W doesnt mean failure it just means a change in profit model, it means they looked at the market and realized most people werent prepared to pay 15USD a month but there were still people willing to put in 1000s of USD into the game through farmers and other services, so they did the math and realized they would make more profit that way>
Lineage also DID NOT fail in the west at all, Lineage II itself had one of the largest private player bases out there, that means clearly that there were tons of people that wanted to play Lineage 2, hell most servers had donators who gave in thousands of dollars, I remember there was this massive private server that was closed by the FBI at one point that was getting millions in revenue every month.
Now if you say that their business model failed, yeah it did, pretty hard, and they missed a lot of revenue, but even after that they managed to run it for 7 years so it must have been at least breaking even. Now the new business model is working for them and works how private servers have been working for years making profit, allow people to play the whole game free of charge and have a cash shop for those crazy mofos that want to spend 1000's of dollars into trying to get stuff that others have to work for.
There was no sudden shift in power on the servers, there was no sudden change in the game that you think "crap now those poor regular players cannot gain anything they are at such a disadvantage", the game has ALWAYS been like this, people with cash bought pretyt much everything to get to the top, both on private and live servers, just now its official, if anything the live players that did not want to cheat the game now can pickup their 15 USD a month and invest that cash into something they really want to achieve within the shop.
I still play this game, i have been playing since launch.I would rather play this than many of the new mmos that are being released.
Going ftp was not a failure at all....Lineage 2 and Aion have the best FTP models in the whole industry right now. Some of the items in the cash shop do give players quite a bit more edge to the point where it could be considered pay2win but the entire game really is free and you dont need to purchase anything. Every mmo is pay 2 win anyways except maybe the precious gw2 ..dare i say anything bad about the perfect game. If people arent buying items from devs they are just buying from farmers.
Plenty people are buying the things out of the cash shop though and as long as that happens we will see new content. The game is not dead at all....they need to get on the bot problem again though.Right before game went ftp nobody dared bot and now it seems nc has let it go again.
I have tried all the new classes except healer and i love them all.32 was overkill and very hard to balance the game
free gear all the way to 86???? YES PLEASE!!!!! many more full item drops??? Thanx. L2 used to be sooooo hard everybody could justify botting by default and while it is much easier now, if you want the best you still have to work your ass off so dont think its EZ mode

#1. Free to play does not equal failure
#2. Lineage II had one of the largest customer bases of any online game EVER.
#3. Lineage is considered one of the grandfathers of the mmo genre, it is respected, it is looked at as a shining example of what old school mmos were.
L2 is the furthest thing from a failure...
Its LITERALLY a shining example of a success.

Aion took 1 year to go F2P, Lineage 2 took 7 years..............
I am not a L2 fan but calling it a failure is not entirely appropriate.
The only thing that all the failed pvp games share is the players.
i guess EQ1 was a failure too then since it went F2p?
this thread is the failure.

A game that lasted 7 years on P2P is a failure? some people shouldn't be allowed to come near the internet.
Have not seen you in a while. Do you still play?
Wasnt this the most popular MMORPG in the world for awhile?
L2 failed? I don't think so.
My theme song.

This is either a bait thread, or the author is clueless.
Lineage II was one of the MOST played MMORPGs, has a lot of fans out there (me included), and had a considerable long life.
Failed P2P? You must be kidding me..
Either way, reported the thread for flame attempt.
No Game managed to give PvP political structure and a reason to be in a game. Game is in my top 2 PvP MMO.

No other games comes even close when it comes to PVP and drama, which to me are both great things lol.
