weird how APB made so few people's lists considering technically it closed doors faster than any MMO, and then gamers last bought it for a couple of happy meal coupons ....compared to what was spend developing 'it' .
Noone played it, therefore noone cares
The above is my personal opinion. Anyone displaying a view contrary to my opinion is obviously WRONG and should STHU. (neener neener)
None. lol. I never got caught up in the "hype train", kept a level head and always read up on products before i bought them :P
Not one single instance comes to mind...
Yep, I feel the same way except for one WoW expansion that I was hoping would be much better, namely Cataclysm. Otherwise, I almost never get hyped up for a game so I am usually never disappointed.
GW2 is the first game I've been truly excited about since the 90's.
I tried to think up 5 but those 4 are the only real "letdowns". There are other games that I have played that are bad, but I had high expectations for these games and they just didn't meet them.
1. Resident Evil abandoning the "survival horror" and going action, as well as getting rid of the zombies in favor of some other kind of infected.
2. Metroid going first person
3. Zelda- link getting a feminine look and gimicky motion controls
4. WoW - Pandarens
5. Diablo 3's loot woes in favor of Blizzards RMHA plan as well as an overall lack of taking the sequel to another level.
For PC gaming:
1. FPS clones - they're all the same since Wolfenstien 3D
2. Blizzards demise in favor of more money.
3. MMO clones - An MMO could really be any genre of game, yet just about every one of them is a clone, but in 8 years, they still can't match the best yet? Pathetic.
4. Lack of cooperative campaign gameplay
5. Forced grouping - where is my scalable content?
Gw2 is great. However as a GW1 vet I feel a little let down by GW2. In and of itself GW2 is an oustanding product. If you were to ask me "Do you think they put enough things from GW1 in?" I would answer no.
Things I miss from GW1 that are not in GW2.
Unique skill bar - 8 skills all changable
Secondary profession - massive skill pool
Hero party
Building party / skill synergy
Guild Halls
I understand why they are not in GW2. However those were some of the things that I wanted them to put into GW2 before we had any solid information.
Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?
Really surprised theres not more FFXIV votes. I guess because most people founf out it was garbage early and didnt buy it. That and it was released suspiciously quick so maybe the expectations were never high to begin with. Either way this game was absolutely appauling.
This is post from the future, October 2012 and the hype bubble has just burst

1. Final Fantasy XIV (hardly play tested at all and it shows, clunky game in general)
They did play test it. They play tested the hell out of it. I was in the alpha for it for months and months and then in a beta that was always on, it was seperate to the other 'public' beta.
The problem was they just completly ignored everything us testers were trying to tell them. The game was actually BETTER in alpha than it was at release. I watched it get progressively worse.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
1. Guild Wars 2: Though I didn't believe that "more of the same" could get any easier than current games, GW2 proves EZ-mode had another gear. The MMO genre dies a little more....
2. Darkfall: Simply put, the sandbox game that wasn't. In fact, there's almost nothing sandbox about this title - AV wouldn't know sandbox design if it bit them on the ass.
3. Age of Conan: Where to start - from massive technical problems, to fatally flawed core design, this one was nothing like what FC promised.
4. Final Fantasy XIV: Terrible game design in literally every phase of the game.
5. DCUO: Extremely linear. Character customization and powersets were a tiny fraction of what the competition offered. SOE's deceptive approach, and general incompetence, didn't help.
That's not to say that none of these games didn't have some redeeming qualities, but for me, they certainly did not deliver the innovation or rewarding gameplay they promised.
1. WarHammer : Great battle ground game, but needed a world.. O wait there was one, just no one used it. And almost no Character customization
2. WoW : just to toony for me
3. AoC : Player movement seemed cumbersome, and poor customer service.
4. Vanguard : Oh where to start this game could of been the best of all time. Released to early, so full of bugs it wasn't funny, It wasn't even ready for Beta. You needed a top of the line puter just to get by. Finally, mandatory server changes to alignment servers that most of the player-base didn’t want didn’t help.
5. SWTOR : Although I loved the companions and the story lines that went with them, it quickly felt old and grindy after the storylines were over. Almost like I finished the game.
Honestly developers should be putting out better material. WoW, Guildwars, Everquest II, Runescape, Eve, City of Heroes 2003-2004 great years for gaming. But now most games feel very cookie cutter to me. Most of theses are still top of the field and that’s sad after 10 years.
Have hope for Mechwarrior online, I know it’s currently a First Person shooter mmo but hoping they expand on that to a full blown MMORPG Battletech universe.
2. Vanguard - Because it really should have been great, and still is. It's just SoE screwed it up. It still has so much potential.
What was SOE's screw up with Vanguard?
They pushed it out the door 8 months earlier than agreed upon, the same week as the Burning Crusade launch. Then, they bought out the dev company, fired most of the people, and put the game in maintainence mode. Then they put someone in charge who, slowly, with a small team, over the course of 3 years, made it more and more and more like WoW.
They didn't advertise it, or develop it seriously, for about 4 years.
It should also be said with out SOE Vanguard would of probably been dead before release. So without SOE Vanguard had a good chance of becoming Vaporware since Microsoft dropped Sigil during development.
So the choices would be to have no Vanguard, or have a poorly supported Vanguard.
Both result in a dead Vanguard. At least without SoE someone else a bit less moronic would have picked up the game.

This is what happened with Warhammer. It was better in beta than in release. I kinda feel this way about a few games actually...Fallen Earth, Vanguard (only vanguard because the beta was free and bugs were acceptable).

2002 - Brad forms Sigil
2004 - Microsoft Games backs Sigil to produce Vanguard
Completion/launch date set for summer 2006
2006 - Sigil misses delivery date.
Sigil buys Vanguard from MS and goes to SOE for funding
SOE backs Sigil and Completion/launch date set for spring 2007
Feb 2007 - The extra 8 months were still not enough for Sigil to finish their game, but game is released
May 2007 - SOE buys Sigil and the Vanguard IP. Sigil takes all its employees out to the parking lot and fires them.
Oct 2007 - SOE begins regular cadence of Game Updates (GUs)
Are you not familiar with the history or did you think we wouldn't be?
This guy's right. For all SOE's sins in the MMO genre Vanguard isn't one of them. They threw Sigil a lifeline when they were already screwed by Brad's mismanagement of the game.
You forgot the part where SOE told Sigil they too were pulling out if they didnt launch. Sigil launchs a half complete game and what SOE knew was goin to happen, happened. People left in droves.
SOE then buys Sigil out and keeps there staff on to complete the game. As the game get more and more features added that should have been in a launch, they start to let the orignal staff go untill you get the staff just after APW was added.
Fast forward 1 year after launch and now VG is in maintance mode. Dismantled most of the customization of character creation and soooo ooooooon.
PS: I though for sure that SOE would have removed the Sigil icon from the rock in NT and added theres to it. Every now and again i got there to see if they did it lol

1. Shadowbane - It could have been so great.
2. Vangaurd - I loved it in beta
3. Fallen Earth - this game had a lot of potential, but I became disappointed at launch.
4. Warhammer - I so hoped it was "daoc 2", but unfortunately it wasn't. So many awesome awesome ideas in early beta that got scrapped.
5. Trials of Atlantis (dark age of camelot expansion) Changed the game for the worst. I wish this expansion never came out.
