From what i've experienced this far into the game at lvl 17 is...  The intro is great worthy of a FF game. it gets you into the story of the game right off the bat.  to compare this style to a game also out it reminds me of the cutscene in SWTOR.  then It starts you off on a major quest line that really draws you into the games story a contuniuation from the intro of course.

after that it drops off hard.

you are left with leve's and another quest line that lacks the same depth as the first one.

with leve's you get an allowance and once those are used up you are stuck grinding tell 12 hours pass for 4 more added allowance points.

The grind is horrible special for archers lucky for me i picked the one class that has the hardest time solo you guessed it archer.

from what i was told ingame. grouping doesnt really start tell lvl 25 and 50 has the most group oriented quest/content.  50 happens to be max lvl.

quest are very few and far between after the first major quest line.  The exp rewards are horrible you'll get like 500-800 exp which, is like killing 2-4 mobs and during a leve you'll do that everytime.

So leve's are the big thing once your allowance is gone thats when your grind starts tell 12 hours pass.

thats pretty much the con side of the game.

The pro is that you can level any class you want all you have to do is purchase the weapon or crafting item to use and you'll start leveling that item.  if you switch back to your original item you are back to the last level you were on that item.

So if you were like a level 30 archer that wanted to become a lancer you can switch back to your bow and keep that level 30 without haveing to relevel again.  i think this is neat.  since you can level every class without haveing to log onto a alt.

another plus is you'll most likely get to choose the name you want haha.  that was a huge plus for me and i have to think its because of the big following this game has in japan more so than america.  useually i have to settle for another name than i originally wanted because more americans play the game.

over all its to me a 6 out of a 10 because of the lack of quest/quest exp.  and don't get me started with the combat not the best out there thats for sure. it does start off wonderful like i said before but drops off really bad once you finish that first major quest.  if you don't mind the grind and enjoy the graphics/music both are the best aspecs of the game.  go right ahead and DL for 9.99. If not you are probably gonna want to wait tell they release the 2.0 version and hope they really up the gaming experience.

as for me i'm gonna grind it out and see if i can really get into the game once im level 25. there's where the grouping begings.  maybe the game will open up more but tell then its gonna be grind grind grind.

A lack of mindless questing is a plus for most FF fans. You can leave that in every other mmorpg post 2004 thank you.

    not just FF fans though.

i'm so burned out on questing in MMOs i have just uninstalled the last 3 games i tried because it was the same old "go from one quest hub to the other in order" type of thing.

i'd actually prefer a meaningless monster grind if it means i can do a little world exploration and not be tied down to a quest chain.

anyways OP, i found the review helpful, i've been looking at trying this game and i may do that.  the price is certainly reasonable.

Try Gladiator, the slowest grind you will ever encounter, Archer is relatively fast with high dps.  your not doing it right.

As most players who have stuck with the game since launch, the majority of players are lvl 50 with a lot of players with every job at 50, so yes there is bound to be more content for those players.  You can do behests from lvl 1 if you have a few friends, but most players prefer to solo grind, though there are plenty of players that will duo if you bother trying where you can do harder leves or mobs grinds for better xp gain.  Also if you grind mobs a couple of levels below you, you will gain more xp per hour than trying to solo hard mobs.

Quests were never the big selling point of FFXIV or XI, so most players expect this.

So leve's are the big thing once your allowance is gone thats when your grind starts tell 12 hours pass.

Take around a month more or less depending on your game time, rested xp and food items helps speed the process.

The current state of the game isnt for everyone and I would say its a niche game as it is, 2.0 will see a very different game with an abundance of changes.  Actually the worst thing about XIV is unstable client. the engine was made for XIII and XIII-2 and is not suitable for multiplayer, as it struggles to handle more than 40 npc/players in any given area.

I wouldn't mind less quest but make the reward exp worth it or keep the same cutscene like quest from the first major quest "Soul something was the name of it in Gridania."  That at least gives you a story to follow instead of just grinding the same mobs over and over again.

I liked the story questing.  reminds me of the FF console games.  just wish it would of kept going.

after i wrote this i log on ding 18 and the archers dps just jumps up and now i'm enjoying my dps.

I duo'd once but now i found the seeking party option see how that works.

hmm just wish the cutscene quest didn't stop so early and kept going throughout the leveling.

I got food items but haven't used yet was thinking i should save tell i get to the higher levels so the grind is a tad bit easier.

lol i'm not a ff fanboy and i do play and currently am subscribed to ffxiv. what i want to know is why are your giving feedback about the game when we all know how bad the present ffxiv is atm. this is the reason why they said a real reborn on ffxiv 2.0 title. as for grinding you must have done something wrong because i never ran out of leves and 2 i never grinded. when i did leves i usually did them in a group and made my own group if i couldn't find any because leves gives more exp and richer rewards when you maximize the difficulty for it. if your doing solo leves and are only doing 2 star difficulty or 1 then you're def going to run out of leves right away. i have lvl 50 archer drg and working on my armorer. the game isn't all about leves either.

the game has tons of contents that you don't get to experience once your cap lvl. for instants the ifrit dungeon or garuda runs or relic weaps. i actually complained about the game being to easy atm, but to me it seems like you're complaining about the lack of content in the beginning of the game. i have never played any mmo that had much content during your first 17 lvls of playing in an mmo. but then again if you say killing x amount of this for x amount of that is content then well that's your call. as for your review ill give it a 2 out of 10 because we all know this and you basically just copy and pasted. if you're going to do a review do it on 2.0 a realm reborn. don't know seems to me it has more logic instead of bashing on an mmo that is already bad and everyone knows about it?

Yeah, I don't get it either. I came here to look around for feedback if anyone has seen 2.0 or tested it yet. Seemed really odd to see this here. There is no point whatsoever for anyone in the MMO community to care or comment about what FFXIV is like right now. Announcements about it being re-released upon the 2.0 patch is everywhere you look. What were you thinking GGaFX? You picked a pretty horrible time to try it, much less review it.

Well, back to my search for more previews. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

I figure it this way. FFXIV 1.0 is good if you're looking for something different from the day-to-day norm of what MMO's have become. If you're looking for WoW, Rift, etc. then this isn't the game for you. What will 2.0 be like? All we have are some documents and .pdf's to reference at this point. No one has tested it yet and if they have, they're clearly under a strict NDA which is why we haven't heard anything.

I appreciate that you took the time to review the game in it's current state OP, but considering this game has been out for almost two years and we are all more than aware that it failed miserably in the general public's eye, well it's just beating a dead moogle at this point.

I'm sure that in due time, we'll have many reviews on the 2.0 launch and what that will bring to the table, I am excited to see.

i'm really looking forward to 2.0 as well. i mean the game as of right now isn't bad if you're just starting out as a noobie. but if you have everything lvl 50 then ya it is pretty bad since nothing else to do for you except chill and help friends lol. i really wish they added gameplay footage atleast from the realm reborn vid though. they said that it's a video that can give us an idea on how the game is going to be when 2.0 comes out. but if you are currently playing ffxiv, atleast for me i don't see a difference. guess what i'm trying to say is i can't tell whats new and whats diff from the cinematic except maybe more polished on gfx i guess.

my review solely was geared to help others who were iffy about trying the game.  since this is my first time actually playing FF XIV.  Its a perspective of a new comer than someone who has been playing the game for years already.  in it's current state and before 2.0 which will be a completely differnt game then.

would diffently give a 2.0 review if i had access but no access was given here.

As for leve's and grinding people i've spoken to ingame didn't seem suprised i ran out of leve's. they were able to give me insight on what to expect throughtout the game.  Also where i should grind at my level. Since i've hit level 18 my archers DPS really has picked up.
