I miss the WoW vs EQ2 flame warz.  without it, this forum seems a bit dull.

on release? WoW blew EQ2 out of the water.

now? EQ2 wins this battle easily.

On release, and for a good 4-5 months afterwards, WOW was by far the better game.

Now? EQ2 blows it out of the water. And I just had a friend install his copy of WOW on my system (he just quit the game) and I'm playing with his account for about a week now so my knowledge is from playing as recently as: Last night.

Playing the games: WoW on MAXIMUM graphics settings and EQ2 on Balanced.... (There are three graphical settings ABOVE balanced, not to mention custom settings)
WoW and EQ2: Performance about the same.
WoW's graphics are pathetic compared to EQ2 (Note: I could have really cranked eq2's graphics up and blown WoW away even worse but I wanted to compare them on settings that most people can handle)
WoW's quests are pathetic compared to EQ2
WoW's storyline is pathetic compared to EQ2
WoW's community is childish compared to EQ2
WoW's content is miniscule compared to EQ2
WoW's support: About the same as EQ2
    WoW's soloability: A bit better than EQ2
WoW's raiding/group play: Nothing compared to EQ2 (especially post CU)
WoW's crafting: Wow has crafting? EQ2 hands down.
WoW's endgame: Nothing compared to EQ2
WoW's PVP: I'd rate them about equal. (D'OH!!! PVP Haters... EQ2 has PVP now)

EQ2 is the better game if you compare them now. 3-4 months ago I'd have told you differently.

the one thing I do know from reading various forums is the WOW servers actually have people on them whereas EQ2 is a ghost town. I love the smell of SOE failure in the morning ::::28::

    Do you play?
Have you witnessed this so-called "Ghost-town" for yourself?
Have you been on the servers and done a /who all 1 /who all 2 /who all 3 and seen thousands of people online playing? In fact once you get into the 40's you have to do /who all 40 classname or it is too many to display.

    I have

They're not "ghost towns" but if you are below 30th or so there aren't many people in the noob zones anymore because most players are upper levels now.

Yah SOE's failure... only a mere 450k players (per NYTimes Report). Someone posted a link to it here a while ago... Matter of fact it was in an article about WoW....

    Sure it's not 2 or 3 million but 400k isn't a 'ghost town' either.

Sorry but u can't rate EQ2's pathetic excuse for PVP as good as WOW's :S

Atleast WOW's PVP feels like t should be in the game unlike EQ2!

Atleast WOw's is very balanced (ppl say its not because they can't play their class)

Atleast WOW has a fluid streaming world with PVP servers!

    etc etc.

To me i had more fun playing WOW in the few months it lasted me than the whole time playing EQ2! EQ2's zoning and low populations really kill the game!

It was just a very badly desgined game!

You haven't tried EQ2 PvP, nor have I, but I can tell you WoW PvP is pointless. You lose your title after a week if you don't keep it up.

Atleast WOW's PVP feels like t should be in the game unlike EQ2!

This claim of yours which has never been backed up either with fact or even opinion doesn't belong in this or any thread. Do you not know that it's a joke thing to say? Back it up with something.

Atleast WOw's is very balanced (ppl say its not because they can't play their class)

NOT. Rogues and Mages own basically any other class in PvP.

Atleast WOW has a fluid streaming world with PVP servers!

    etc etc.

EQ2 has lush vibrant graphics that are mind-bendingly detailed. Zones cut down on lag. Ever fly into SouthShore when theres PvP going on? Calling it a slideshow is being kind.

To me i had more fun playing WOW in the few months it lasted me than the whole time playing EQ2! EQ2's zoning and low populations really kill the game!

You played EQ2 for even less. My server Antonia Bayle is on Heavy load every night. Sorry your opinion is about 4 months out of date, about the amount of time since you last played.

It was just a very badly desgined game!

Try it out today, it kicks some serious ass.

There's no comparison anymore. EQ2 has some serious depth and gameplay, WoW is for kids with a high boredom threshold.

DISCLAIMER: the only time I will bash another game is when defending a less popular one, especially when it deserves it this much.

seriously this forum has some of the worst opinions about mmorpg's.  Its bad enough when people think everyone should be playing these godawful small mmorpg's that are free trials acting like their better somehow than the big ones like WOW or EQ2, or when they talk about mmorpg failures like Horizons and AC2 putting them on a pedestal, both those games absolutely stunk, i played both, they failed for good reason.  then they talk about eve like its the greatest thing on the planet but only people on this forum prop it up like that.  I'm not saying Eve sucks but the opinions you get in general from this forum generally favor games most people find boring like Eve or awful like Horizons or AC2.  Its almost offensive that people put them over WOW or EQ2, much less UO or EQ1.

Anyways to get on topic, you might want to mention when you lose rank in WOW pvper you still can buy the max rank rewards that you've reached.  To the other guy saying EQ2 soloing is comparable to WOW goes to show you've never played WOW or dont know much about it.  WOW pvper isnt that bad, its the ONLY pvper game on the market where it has a pve style exp system but for pvper kills which is basically called honor points.  You can reach certain ranks which open up vendor bought rewards of close to top end pve gear or sometimes better.  Also mages and rogues dont dominate pvper, why do people say these inaccurate things?  Especially when a warrior can kill a mage in 2 hits, and most rogues dont stand a chance against them.  Then everyone complains about shamans being overpowered or how druids are uncatchable, or how priests melt faces, etc. etc.

Its late and i dont feel like going into all the misinformation here because theres too much to cover, but anyone reading that genuinely interested should take whats said here with a grain of salt.  Visit multiple forums and average out an opinion from that :)

its pretty clear WoW is the better game between those two. hey, check the sale records, enough said. and don't forget to laugh at the people who says its only about the company name, take a look at Squareenix and Final Fantasy 11, Squareenix is populair like hell, yet FF11 don't even have half the subscribers as WoW does.
  • scaramooshscaramoosh Member Posts: 3,424

    Lol i havn't played EQ2 PVP?

Erm your an idiot :S I think everyone that has the expansion has played the PVP and found it to be a disappointment! WOW is the better game, i don't play any of them anymore but even subs say that ;)

To me this is how it goes:

    ----------------

    Graphics: Winner   WOW!

EQ2's may be tech better but they look plain, boring and plastic! The artists arn't great tbh. WOW's has great artists and the whole game just has style.

    -----------

    Sound: Draw!

This one is hard to chose from EQ2 has the voice overs but the music isn't as good as WOW!

    -----------

    Role Playing: Draw!

    They both have roleplay servers.

    ------------------

    Value: Winner WOW!

No doubt about this one! SOE rip you off :P Specially in Europe where they charge like $18 a month :S

    ----------------------

    Fun: Winner WOW!

WOW is just more fun! You don't have to sit around and wait for people to come on because theres always loads of people! Plus it's designed not to be boring like EQ2!

    ----------------------

    Community: Winner WOW!

It wins purely because of ammount of people who play it ;) There will always be people online to group with! EQ2 however is mostly emty and you have to wait for people to come on : I couldn't complete the world event quest because i needed a 2x group raid which i couldn't find even 1 person!

    ----------------------

    Performance / Lag: winner EQ2!

WOW servers are pants while EQ2's are amazing! Also EQ2 has great performance for the graphics while WOW has surprising low FPS for the graphics!

    -----------------------

    Customer Service: Winner EQ2!

WOW simple just doesn't have one? lol!

    -----------------------

    Crafting: Winner EQ2!

Well EQ2 simpley just has a better Crafting system!

    --------------

    PVP: Winner WOW!

    Great PVP for WOW.

    -----------------------

    PVE: Winner WOW!

    Love WOWs raids :D

    Overall: WOW

I read the NY Times article and did you notice they didn't cite a source for the 450k EQ2 subscribers? They quoted SOE themselves no doubt who are flat out lying. But you can be a good little boy scout and try to verify the 450k subscriber base which so far nobody has been able to do.

After the Desert of Flames EQ2 is now as it should of been. On realese I thought WoW kicked all ass, but after quiting and missing EQ2 I now have to say EQ2 is by FAR the best out there.

So my vote is WoW is a pretty bad mmorpg, but I dont like the fact its being called a mmorpg...its more a mmo-arcade game.

EQ2 far better on all points. Quests, graphics (altho I dont see this as a important part of if a game is good or not), support (SOE patches all the time adding more content and fixing things) etc etc. Its just a better game hands down.

Oh yeah and one more thing....lock this pathetic topic! Thank you.

I agree with Scaramooshe's last post. It's objective. I kind of do like EQ2's music though.

But WoW is better than EQ2. I own both, I enjoyed both, I just think WoW is a better game.

If you disagree with my opinion, you are wrong.

Um... you couldn't find a 2x group? Are you in a guild? The events where you are supposed to take 1 or more groups are really designed for guild members to do. They aren't a SOLO event. WoW, as I said, is a bit better than EQ2 for soloists but EQ2 has definitely improved in that area since release.

EQ2 is a game designed more for grouping and guild events but it does allow soloists to have fun as well but leaves the 'best' content for those who are in a guild or have a regular group of folks that they play with.

As far as community? I guess we can differ on opinion then. WoW may have more players but for me being alone in a crowd is no different than just being flat out alone. And in WoW that crowd is a lot less friendly than the tighter knit community in EQ2.

As to PVP? I like EQ2's PVP fine. It's not the best out there, nor is WoW's for that matter. They're both 'below average' as far as PVP goes. WoW PVP is unbalanced but it has decent rewards. EQ2's PVP is balanced but the rewards have yet to really be seen. Overall, it's a wash. If you're into a game for it's PVP you need to look elsewhere besides either game. AO, DAOC, AC1 Darktide, just to name a few games that were DESIGNED with PVP in mind. Both WoW and EQ2 added PVP after the fact, which means it's not going to be as good as a game designed around the idea of PVP.

As to the graphics? Sorry, I don't like WoW's graphics. The poly count is about on par with EQ1 Kunark and while they did a good job with the textures everything looks to me like you're in a cartoon. I just don't like cartoony graphics. And I can't get past the character graphics... oh my god... night elves should be able to flap their ears and fly!!!

    Graphics Technology: EQ2
Graphics QUALITY: subjective. I prefer EQ2's (though the hair on the characters needs a revamp! It does, as you said, look plastic). Other than character HAIR, however, the graphics in EQ2 are beautiful and very real looking. In WOW I feel like I'm looking at a cartoonists rendering of a world. Which, if you love that style, is great. But if, like me, you want your game to suck you into the world and make you feel like you're IN it, it sucks.

Elnator, what do you mean by WoW's PvP system being unbalanced? It may be lacking in purpose beyond simple competition, but I haven't found that the classes are unbalanced for quite some time.
