I cancelled my World of Warcraft account roughly 6 months ago due to the lack of any worthwhile PvP outside of Battlegrounds(which I got bored of in about 10 days). The current PvP servers have a system that has absolutely ZERO risk or reward. I do not think a title next to my name or vendor bought items after countless hours spent in a Battleground is any type of 'reward' for vanquishing a foe. I was fed up with players getting killed than just coming back a minute or two later and trying to kill you again, only to die, then rinse and repeat.
I have noticed Blizzard has put up a lot of new servers since I have been gone, even a new type called PVP-RPG(hah, like that will ever work out).
I wondered what the chances would be of Blizzard actually trying a Hardcore type of server.. Not one where when ya get killed by mobs you are permanently dead, or if you are player killed you are permanently dead. The player retention on a server like that would be far too low. I am thinking more along the lines of a server that actually has penalties for being killed in PvP combat.. Say you lose a set amount of gold and can not log that character in for 24 full hours after dying in PvP combat.. Or maybe even drop a random item from your inventory. This would breathe new life into what I find to be stale, meaningless PvP and actually let a side have some sort of zone control. Yes, people will still get ganked and ambushed, but imagine being able to go into Stranglethorn Vale, help flush out the opposing faction and actually control the zone for a full day?
Players who are way out of level range and are killed by high levels will not experience this type of death, to prevent insane griefing potential. Like the current honor system, the higher level player would not receive any type of reward for 'ganking' or 'griefing' lowbies. But, if the higher level was taken down by a rampaging horde of lowbies, he would be dead for 24 hours and lose something(whether it be gold, a random item, or both) to boot.
What do you think? Would you give a server like this a chance? Its not like if you are killed you would not have another server to go play on at this point. I am not asking for players opinions who do not like PvP or have not at any point played to a high level on a WoW PvP server.

I wouldn't go back to WoW no matter what. It was a fun enough game, just not for me, and yes, the pvp is quite pointless.
I like pvp, in fact I really don't want a game that doesn't have decent pvp..but there has to be a motivation for pvp. Wow had perfect potential for it, with the backstory and all, but they wasted it.
Its still a good casual game though, and the graphics are nice.
i agree
Grr I swear I replied to this already. Anyway. What I said was I think a hardcore server could be a good idea and maybe it should be one which encourages more emphasis on grouping than soloing, ie provide some sort of grouping bonus.
Additionally, another server idea I thought would be good for WoW is a mature one. Where the server shows on the server select this server is for a more mature audience. Yeah it won't stop the people you're trying to stop come in but it will most likely not attract that type of audience and therefore will be good. Especially in terms of trying to generate any form of a community in WoW>
Ive talked to some people i know that have something like 5 level 60 characters and they are bored to death now.
The game is perfect for a hardcore server and i think it would give the game more than just your standard gameplay.Ive had some thoughts on this so here goes "my ruleset":
1.No battle grounds on the server itself.Take the basic battleground rules and implement them serverwide.Kill a player an armor shard drops.Turn that into a specified NPC and it goes towards server domination.Once a certain domination # is reached the "borders" begin to change. After this horde and alliance players begin to get an XP bonus. This would be a percentage based upon land control.
2.No permadeath.Instead upon losing in a fight you would see death as you normally would. The difference on this server is that you would drop either gold OR armor OR your weapon.I would make it a choice at character creation.
3.BTW as land control begins to take effect i would have the towns and villages begin to change to either the "horde" look or the "alliance" look.Along with that the NPC's would change faction as well.If the border doesnt change for say 2 days this would begin to slowly happen. The longer the border is in place the hard it is to get the town back because the NPC gaurds would be very tough to kill.
4.Open PvP everywhere. The only place this would not apply is auctionhouses.
5.The crafting would change as well.Everything would have different values and different affects much like SWG.
6.If a "capital" is under threat of border change an "epic" battle is scheduled. All Players would be able to participate.Sign up for a date and time to be determined be Blizzard and wich ever side wins gets to walk into the capital city with no threat and kill the king. Here's the catch the king is uberstrong and almost impossible to kill.
So there ya go what do you think?

ShadowBane-Play to Crush
Come my Friends, I can see ShadowBane is what you are looking for. It will satisfy your need to kill
yea Shadowbane is a great Play to Crush game and the new lore server just game up this monday!
its Hardcore pvp!
You have some good ideas, but the problem is getting Blizzard to actually code something that ambitious. It would take too much time and effort on their part, so chances of seeing it happen are pretty slim.
If they just did some minor tweaks to the current PvP system(booting people for a day after dying, item and/or cash drops) and package it to a new server, I would not have a problem going back. God knows they have the resource to put up server after server after server.

I tried the twenty days free for Sahdowbane not more than a month ago and stopped playing after about 2 hours.. I know that gameplay makes up for graphics, but damn. The game was just plain bad looking; very dated and clunky feeling. The interface was a whole 'nother story. Irritating as hell was the first thing that came to mind. I just didn't want to invest the time into learning a game that I probably wasn't going to end up sticking with in the longrun.
I am not saying SB is a bad game, its just not my cup of tea.
Well i just figured it takes Blizzard so long to put a patch through if they start now we might see it in a year.
