Help! I need a new game...

So i am fairly new at the whole MMORPG thing... as a matter of fact I'm new to any PC gaming. The first and only MMORPG I ever played is FFXI. I have to say I love it, or at leat i did for awhile. The problem with me is, I cannot play as often as most MMORPG-ers. I am lucky if I can get online for a few hours a week. Now, for awhile it was all good. Now that I have reached a higher level, the amount of time it takes me to get a party is ridiculous. Being only able to spend a few hours a week, it sucks now because unlike the lower levels there is not much to do as a solo player. I started to read through some reviews of games on this site, and some of them sound way too involved and confusing, or they seem like playing solo is next to impossible. People I have talked have told me that i would be better off with an offline, solo game... I do however love to whole MMORPG thing, so my question is this:

What MMORPG do you think would be best for me? I do want the whole party/group thing, but I also want to be able to play quite a bit solo. I also want something that i can go back to whenever I can, probably a few hours a week, without feeling like I am missing the whole enjoyment of the game because i cannot commit to long playing hours...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

WoW, although I don't quite like that scene.. it's probably fit perfectly for you. Every class can solo.

Yea play World of Warcraft (WOW) you will like it. But once you hit level 60 and pvp for a little bit you will get bored.

i would not start at WoW if i was you...

    1) you need alot of time if you wonna reach high Rank at WoW's PvP system

    2) if you like really hardcore pvp find another game than WoW

    3) my opinion is that you get soo bored of the game so fast that it isn't worth starting on!

i dont really know FFXI but you should give City of Villains a try when it release, or you could try out EVE online if you like Sci-fi games whit great pvp ( the Game is not based on 24/7 gameplay you can go offline while your Toon train ) image

Id have to say WoW also. Altough it is true that youll have to devote alot of time to play competitively, its also true that a casual player can just log in and have fun. Also, if you roll a priest you wont have any problem getting groups.

WoW is kinda the "tutorial game" to the MMOs.  image

I would recommend City of Heroes over WoW anyday, for various reasons.  As long as what matter to you is fast paced combat, nice soloing and grouping (with your friends regardless of levels), great story, awesome customisation and a kick ass feeling.

If you want some basic tradeskilling system, to play in your inventory, a medieval fantasy setting...well WoW would be a better starting choice, but I recommend highly to consider City of Heroes.

    Others MMOs;

EQ2: Well, the guild is everything, and you are nothing without your guild.  Solo in this game is like allowing bicycles on the highway, but it is possible and I cant help but react the same way to peoples saying they enjoy solo in EQ2 then if they say they enjoy cycling on the highway...I am sure some peoples would enjoy cycling on the highway as well.

EQ: A classic, still my second favority MMO.

Saga of Ryzom: I am a new player into that game, but I am having a blast.  It is definitely requiring a HUGE time investment, but you are free to progress to the point you care and stop there, come back as you want.  It is using a system I would resume as a happy hybrid between Rolemaster and Morrowind, with no class whatsoever.  The game has many flaws, but since the company is a small silly company, I can accept their "must raid mistake" (Sorry SoE, no such free pass for you, nor for Blizzard, WotC or any big company like NCsoft, you got to deliver a game that doesnt shaft non-raiders and non-PvPers as far as I am concerned).  Like I said, I am having a blast and I play on the english server despite been a french speaker (awaken hours matters more then language).  The interface is a little crude, the options a little weird, but once you know them, the game is great and I am sure they will improve it a LOT in the future (like an automated hotkey to select player 1, player 2 and so on is definitely needed into the game, clicking the name in the group window is annoying).  They dont have the SideKick of CoH(ability to group with any level of players), but it is almost as nice...yet not as nice...since the noob is not really helping (in CoH the noob is unefficient, but he is helping for real), and for me to be able to help to some extend matters a LOT.  The guild forum is INSIDE the game, which make any guildleader incredibly happy! image

Horizons: I didnt like it enough to play it long, but it is definitely a very nice game, you can play a dragon and everything.  Yet, I didnt like the way they bring class...lot of freedom to shaft yourself...I like freedom, but to shaft myself to a point I wanna cry and need to restart...well...I am a customer and a big baby. :)  The interface is quite crude and unfriendly...the game has this "hardcore feeling".

DAoC: Well, goes play WoW and if you like it and want to play real RvR...that should be a consideration.  Not my type.

In the near future many games will be released (and not only MMO, Civ4 and Heroes of Might and Magic V(can it be worser than the 4th?); Civ4 is ruled by a great company, and they understand well to not over released and died from it like it happens to Myst and many other great product...no, dont expect Civ5 before 2010+...I am no employee, but we all see the release pattern...and they understand to not over doing it).

    Damague,

He wanted advice on a new game...not a detailed explanation on how a game did not measure to your expectations..

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

I'd have to agree with all the WoW suggestions. You can log in for an hour and actually get a few things done. You won't advance "fast", but you will advance. (Unlike FFXI where you'd have to wait longer than your week's playing time just to FIND a group, nevermind get into a group and start exping.)

There is more to the game than getting the highest PvP rank. But if the OP's goal in WoW is to GET the highest PvP rank, and he/she won't be happy advancing until that, yes, WoW would be wrong for him/her.

There's not much else out there, when it comes to casual MMOs. May want to try Guild Wars (even though it is NOT a MMORPG, it's kind of similar). There's a free trial for both, I think. I don't know much about the WoW trial, except that you cannot trade or have more than like 20 gold during it. Guild Wars trial is like 10 hours within 14 days. No other limitations that I'm aware of :)

    Guild Wars 10 Hour Trial

Good luck finding something that works for you.

I like both guild wars and wow.....there both really good games, and guild wars doesn't require a monthly fee.......WoW is jsut alot of fun good pvp and alot to do......

city of heroes is good but gets repetitive

    WoW
    -Rhalon 85 B.E. rogue
    -Rhalon 81 UD Mage
    -Doneski 85 Orc death knight

FFXI has PvP? Not unless you count Ballista, which you shouldn't. BTW, why is your avatar a turd wearing red shoes?

Moo! (Jumpgate is a very good space baced MMORPG that alot of pilots play only a few hours a week.  There are some things - mining, killing AI conflux, etc. - that contribute to the game overall, can be done by anyone, and do not require you to be on at any particular point in time to make a contribution.  Its learning curve is fairly easy but the more you learn, the more there is to learn. If you can fly a space ship in 3D then you can enjoy the various aspects for months and have a lot of fun learning new stuff as you are ready!)
