The PlanetSide 2 closed beta has officially kicked off as of today, August 6th. In addition, John Smedley has also revealed that PS2 will indeed be a Steam title.

@RedditSide Planetside 2 will be on Steam. Yes it will

    i read that 1st beta testers will be planetside 1 veterans. Im not lucky with key but i cant wait to see 1st Gameplay video :)

    According to Smedley, 1st wave is current PS1 subscribers, after that is inactive PS1 playrers.  Given how few current PS1 subscribers there likely are, I'd expect the 2nd wave to start fairly quick.

    they are indeed going to send out a whole bunch of invites probably 100k in the first week

    We are go for beta at 2pm. Flagging has started. This is for current PS1 subscribers and All Access members. PS1 vets later.

    They sure have a disorganized way of getting information out there. Nothing on their website or faceback, but random tweets from devs.

    Smedley said that anyone currently holding a BETA key will be in within 2 weeks.

    That's because it's "closed beta", but not really a beta just yet. Real beta starts in 2-3 weeks, that's when the flood gates will open and tons of invites will be sent out.

    As I said before... This is to TEST the game, as in find bugs and report issues... Not to be used as a demo. You want this game to be great? Then do your part and help make it great by providing feedback.

    servers should be up within 2 hours. slight delay due to fixing a last minute issue that came up. nothing to see here...

    with the PS2 beta we are launching our new forums. Soon to come to our other games if we like them!

     

    So it seems the servers won't be up until 4PM Pacific now. Forums still aren't back up yet either, they're upgrading them.

    Hmmm...

    1. First AAA MMO to launch as F2P (no purchase required).
    2. First game to use SOE's new Forgelight game engine.
    3. First SOE game to use the new forum format.

     

    Soe is pushing hard it seems...
