I was wondering what the interest among computer game players is for RTS games that don't follow the WC3, SC/SC2 model.
I am thinking of something with features from Majesty, Warlods Battlecry 3 and Dominions 3.
Dominions 3 posseses a complex system of magic skills and upgrades and spells and summons as well as requiring you to keep garrisons in strategic provinces. Further its difficult to easily reinforce an army in a remote place without significant investment in magic and powerful flying units.
I would like to see an RTS game in the fantasy vein with a complex magic system like that. Also both it and Warlords Battlecry have a sort of avatar character that can build most builds and can learn diverse magic and do things like summon units.
I really like the idea of the more strategic issues in turn based strategy. Instead of focusing purely on APM and tactical micro you would need to choose which of many battles to micro, or to micro only certain powerful units. This is common in Dominions although as a TBS it isn't really micro but more like spell use and such on special units.
Imagine if you couldn't just run around with one or two big armies. Imagine a whole battle could go on in less time than it took you to reinforce that garrison. You would have to garrison the most important areas like a resource production building that is far out and exposed. Maybe put extra defense on an area with many research buildings or a very expensive mages guild.
For moe RPG features you would have the hero and the magic system, much like dominions but also RPGey, and you would have other things. What if each kind of unit had 7 divergent kinds all of which had 2 or 3 upgrade lines to follow. You had an archer, you could select the range or damage or attack speed(to proc poisons or fire or something) subclass to focus on. There might be upgrades like poison for all non mage or builder units, there might be class based upgrade like better wood or strings for bows and cross bows, or better arrows that only affected some ranged classes, or maybe special arrows only for one class, and then even more upgrades to choose from for the 3 subclasses.
You could argue that there might be problems with so much upgrading and unit customization but I would argue that given the slower TBSesque speed of the game where you don't have to worry about 450 apm, it wouldn't have a huge negative effect on the experience.

If you like Civ 4, then download the Fall From Heaven mod

It completly recreating Civ4 in a fantasy setting complete with leaders, civilsations, units, buildings, map features, a magic system, quests, map events, heros, dragons and few more new game mechanics.
If you continue to make sweeping statements like you know what everyone everywhere thinks about a certain topic then I am going to shout at you.
It easy to type 'I think this is the worst game ever'
Rather than the 'This is the worst game ever'
