Yeah I agree, many MMORPGs just use beta as a way to hype up their game. Sure they say feedback is important but most of the time they don't bother/have enough resources to go through the bugs.

However you also wrote "Guild Wars 2 needed you to pre-purchase the game to even get access or otherwise treasure hunt for a fabled beta key."

I disagree with this statement a bit. I can see why you think it was a bad idea to prepurchase to test a game. BUT there was very very very many beta keys given away. Youtube users who has less than 5k suscribers was given 20-30 beta keys simply for having a couple of GW2 vids. Some of the bigger sites were given 50k+ keys. Sure some of them were gone in hours, but I'm sure if you looked you could've found one or two.

Another thing, many people had prepurchased the game, tried it out, decided it wasn't for them and then got their money refunded. So no problem there.

And to your original point, these betas for guild wars 2 was just that. Countless times devs have stated that it is beta and meant to be treated as such. They actually listened to player feedback, unlike many companies out there.

Um, I didn't see anything on there about the actual gameplay. Just about lack of beta access.

The beta flopped? I was under the impression that there was an NDA and that discussing anything related was a no-no.

Anyone who gets upset with delays and issues in a beta does not understand that you are the frontline to bare the brunt of the issues so no one else does.  The world is full of TONS of games not in beta and ready to play so if you cant play right away, enjoy something else.

A game like this can not release without dealing with the nonsense, there is too many moving parts and with that you as a tester need to either step up or find something else to do so they can release the best product they can.

I know this is cheesy and said to death but it's the reality of things and the more people ignore the bitter they become.  If this game claims it hits gold and you still cant play without major issues I would say thats a fine time to get worried but they just left  Alpha!

@Yaoming: 50k beta keys? Maybe I missed the treasure chest of beta keys but I had to go through quite a bit of trouble to get mine. Also in a crappy economy expecting people to drop 60 bucks and then get a refund is a bit ridiculous but to each their own. Maybe it just wasn't my cup o' tea.

@jusomdude: Hard to explain anything about the game when its under NDA first off and 2 the beta never even started and players were strung along all day as to when it would start and how. Which is what the blog was about.

@Sirr0 same answer, Yes I am aware a game has delays and its all part of the process and there really isn't much to complain about seeing how simply if you don't like it, move along. The issue was more how they handled this supposed event and kinda jerked around their fans. Lot of let down people and very little commucation it would seem. Like I said it was poorly handled.

This means their beta sux and my patience for not being treated like gaming royalty is growing thin .... fini!"

sounds more like an OP epic fail than anything.  maybe they did read his facebook posts/tweets and decided to exclude him on that basis alone, i would image

maybe if/when the game gets to the open beta stage he should try again, but im kind of wondering if not getting into the beta was what he really wanted anyway.image

    It's closed beta.

So there will be unscheduled server downtimes, unscheduled character wipes and unscheduled changes to gameplay. The start may be delayed, the end may be delayed and the entire beta program may be suspended for a while if serious bugs are found.

Expect to be "jerked around" by the dev team. Priorities will change rapidly and unpredictably, and the dev's will not be notifying you a week in advance when changes, server downtimes, etc. are going to happen.

Do not schedule your life around your beta playtimes, schedule your beta playtimes around your life. Otherwise you will be frustrated and whining on the forums.

Access to closed beta is a privilige, and it is voluntary. If things don't suit you or your lifestyle, withdraw from beta. That is your right, and your only right.

I blame the few big name studios that used betas as a preview / demo for the masses for this sorry excuse for a thread.

If you followed planetside 2 at all you would have known they said they're doing waves of invites and everyone with a key is expected to get in 2-4weeks if everything goes as plan. And since its an actual beta its safe to say it'll prob take longer since betas are usually filled with bugs, server stability probelems etc.
