I live in Europe but was gifted a NA version of the game from GameStop. At the time of purchase I wasn't able to find any information on any region lock; I'm not saying there wasn't any, but I did look and couldn't find anything. Later on I found out that I wouldn't be able to play that copy post release. "Fine," I thought, "I can buy another copy."
But apparently it wasn't that easy. You see, I had linked my GW1 account for the HoM rewards and told by support on May 7th that, "It will be possible for support to assist you with unlinking and re-linking Guild Wars accounts for the Hall of Monuments." Now I'm being told otherwise.
Neither GameStop nor ANet will offer a refund and ANet won't unlink the GW1 account. Not only will I have to buy a second copy just to be able to play the game at all, I will have lost my 30 HoM points in the process.
I've never been as disappointed by any customer support as I am by this.

Now that really sucks. Despite not being as much of a fan of GW2 as the vast majority here I really am surprised that their customer support can't pull such a seemingly simply thing off. I know that I wouldn't settle for the loss of HoM points. I'd suggest asking a 2nd, maybe even a 3rd and 4th time. I do hope that the customer support won't be the weak link in this whole GW2 madness.
Keep politely pushing for a solution from the NCSoft Support team. Some of them are more willing to work to help customers with difficult support issues than others. You just need the right person to get assigned to your case and you have a chance to get it resolved.
Did they say they would never be able to fix it, or not at this time? I know there is a lot of work being done on GW2 and NCSoft account services now. They are making the changes needed to allow people who weren't able to link HoM when they set up their GW2 accounts to do so, as well as to address other account services limitations. It's possible they can't do what you want right now, but may be able to do so closer to release.
It would be pretty dumb to have a system that wouldn't allow linkage tobe changed, or to allow a US copy to be switched to an EU copy, while keeping the same account.

"Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to adjust the region at this time." - Aug 3rd.
"We are not able to unlink serial codes from Retail purchases." - Aug 8th.
I've been in contact with them for almost two weeks, with six different people replying to the latest ticket alone and it has been escalated twice. They say I need to turn to GameStop for a refund, but their reply is that they don't offer refunds for MMOs or games where a pre-purchase gives access to a beta (where GW2 is both).I'm guessing that those who got their region changed bought the game directly from ANet? GameStop is on their list of recommended retailers, though, they ought to be able to fix this
I certainly hope they will find a solution for that. I can't believe that a company aiming for such a major release with such a hyped product let such an embarrassment happen. I wish you all the best with getting this fixed in time.
Thank you

My sympathies OP. That is a really annoying situation.
Actually back in the day when Guild Wars was region locked (NA, EU and Asia) Arenanet granted you up 3 regionchanges free of charge.
I know a few who originally got their region changed from EU to NA because they preferred to play at the times where NA was typically holding halls for regional favor of the gods.
I hope your perceverance with customer support will eventually pay off.
We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!
(repeat ad infinitum)
You know, I'm not sure. My best guess would be that it's because of deals they've made with publishers and retailers. If they don't have a region lock, people would buy from wherever it's cheapest as opposed to where they live (it's more expensive in Europe than in NA (and yes, I've offered to pay the difference for a region lock)).
Block the trolls, don't answer them, so we can remove the garbage from these forums
Send a support ticket.
I had a similar issue. My problem was not region-lock related, but I wanted to unlink an account and link it to another one and support did it in a flash!
They asked a buckload of questions (probably to make sure the accounts were actually mine) but the answer I got was pretty fast and everything got solved in a day
that makes sense but in my case i used to live in Japan and could play my european version of GW1 and played with my UK friends , nothing was locked for me maybe they changed that
thanks for the explanation
I have a suggestion. It really shouldn't matter if your accounts are linked (yes I know it does since this is the way Anet/NCSoft has it set up) since all you are really wanting is the promised goodies from your account. Ask Anet if there is a way to allow you to get access to the goodies. A flag that can be set on server or something. My point here is that by focusing on a problem (not linking retail versions) rather than a solution (getting you the goodies) someimes limits people in their response to a customer service issue. Good luck, keep your cool, and help the company help you.
That's not a bad idea, I'll ask that. Thank you
I'd also call arenanet instead of ncsoft, clearly arenanet support will be more willing to help.
also, as I understand it, it shouldn't matter if you have a NA or EU version of the game, since this was covered extensively
a while ago, they said there's no hard region lock at all, what determines where you can play from is your homewrold selection otherwise people who travel and such would be unable to play, arenant explained that you can switch your account from NA to EU in a matter of minutes, it'll cost you some gems to do it but that is it.
switching your homeworld from a NA one to a EU one essentially transfers your whole account to an EU homeworld.

@Taugrim explains why the fanbois don't get it
The lack of hard lreigon lock means you can play one ithe rUS or Us servers form anywhere. There is different sort of region lock which is tied to login server however. EU versions go through EU datacenter only and US ones go through the US datacenter only. What it means is that EU version won't run in US and vice versa.
However, Arena Net has stated that if you are traveling or changing location You should contact their cusotmer support and they will try to sort it out for you on case by case basis.
If others have been able to get the accounts unlinked, I don't know why they can't do so for the OP. If they can unlink the HoM from the US account, then you can create a new account with an EU key, link your HoM and be all set. Getting a refund from Gamestop will then be an issue with Gamestop, not NCSoft/Arenanet.
I think one issue was that you were "gifted" the US GW2 account. I can see that Gamestop isn't going to give you a refund if you didn't even buy the game. The person gifting you the game would have to get the refund. Then, it would be up to you and them if they were to gift you an EU copy.
That may be the way to approach NCSoft. Just work on getting the HoM unlinked and then work out a way to trade your US account for an EU account.

OP needs to skip ncsoft and talk directly to ANet's support.
Also, he doesn't even have to mention he has 2 different versions of the game. Just say you want to unlink from one account and link to the other, ANet happily does that in less than a day.
It's solved. In the worst way possible, but at least I'll get my HoM points back.
My third contact with GameStop was this weekend, and they agreed to cancel the purchase. Note that it's not a refund, just a cancellation, since they don't refund purchases that give you beta access. This way they'll let ANet know that the code is invalid and that will automatically unlink my GW account.
The information in the last sentence is the only help I got from ANet, despite repeated contact and having various ideas for solving it (refund, changing region and just unlinking the accounts).
The story of how I paid twice the price for GW2. Mildly put, I'm disappointed.
I actually find this hard to believe. The Gamestop part and definitely the Arenanet part. I also don't see how a cancellation would get you anywhere on it's own.
You said the US gamestop purchase was "gifted" to you. You wouldn't be the person to ask for a refund and there is no way they would give someone in Europe, who didn't actually buy the game, a credit or refund for a US purchase. The person who gifted it to you would have to be the one to approach Gamestop. Why didn't you ask the person who gifted you the game for help getting this resolved? I think that entire element is fishy.
Also, I know that sometimes NCSoft support can be slow and frustrating when you have a complex issue that they don't have a proceedure already in place to adress, but it almost always gets resolved eventually. I know others have been able to get their HoM unlinked and linked to a new GW2 account, so I don't really understand how they could not have resolved it for you as well. Unless, of course, you just couldn't provide them with the information required to prove that you owned the GW2 and GW1 accounts.

Even I dislike Gamestop myself and never buy stuff from them anymore,
I must admit that it's logical that they won't refund you the game.
You used the code after all and so they can't sell the game to someone else anymore making this copy of the game being useless.
What I don't understand on your part is:
- How were you able to use the code to register the game on the NA site?
Were you in the US at that time and registered from there?
The reason I'm asking is that no matter if I'm trying to buy the game online( I don't need it since I have my code since the 7th april already ^_^) OR going to the ANet register site, I always end up on the german site because it notices that I'm located there.
Same thing with the Hom! I have to change the link myself by replacing the "de" with "en" on the browser if I wanna check my HoM in english.
Also when I wanted to buy a US version to gift it to a friend from the USA, all sites including the ANet shop automatically redirected me to a EU version of the game.
I was able to select a NA version on one site only and even there it brought up a info about the region lock.
So I'm wondering how it worked for you. O_o
Does your NCSoft account has the correct data of yours aswell or does it say that you are coming from the US?
Might have something to do with that if that's the case when it comes to the linking aswell but not sure.
Too bad your version isn't working.
I hope they will be able to short this thing out.
Well in the 8+ years I'm a NCSoft customer, I needed their support like 4 times and all 4 times they helped immediately so I don't know why you would call them crappy.
You had a issue that couldn't be solved or did you just hear someone else saying they are crappy?
