And the cycle starts again

Here we go again.

  1. New game hyped and ready to release causing excitement on the boards.
  2. Game releases and it's hailed as the greatest thing since sliced bread
  3. It's fun for somewhere between a few weeks and a couple of months
  4. Game starts getting stale and I loose the urge to log in
  5. I start reading the boards waiting on the next hyped game to release
blah...

I really hope this game breaks the cycle.  When I first got into MMOs, I played Asheron's Call for 4 years and loved it.  I played City of Heroes for 2.5 years and it was great.  Since then, I've played nothing longer than six months (World of Warcraft).  Nothing seems fresh enough or good enough to hold my attention long these days.  I'm not sure if it's me that's changed or the quality of the games.

I've purposefully avoided GW2 beta tests and videos because I want the game to be as fresh as possible when I log in.  I don't even know much about the mechanics of the game.  Ah well, here's hoping....

I've played in all the BWE's and in all the stress tests. I admire your fortitude in avoiding GW2 betas and stress tests. God knows I could not resist; I pre-purchased my copy at 1:30am on April 10th.

Having played GW2 during the beta period I can tell you Deathstrike2 that you are in for an amazing game! I know there are many dissenting opinions out there and I hope they repsect mine as I respect theirs (this is all obviously based on my own personal opinions).

I'm hoping as well that GW2 breaks the cycle (been there done that) and is here to stay doting on us for many years to come.

Personally I think its the community and the guild you join that makes the difference whether or not you stick at a game. Well thats true for me, I've been playing World of Warcraft for about 2 years with a break for SWTOR, if it wasn't for the guild I'm part of, I wouldn't be playing for half as long. Some of us are going to play GW2 as a second MMO and should be fun to go over there with some friends and play that while waiting for Mists and when I've got nothing to do :)

So for me this game will already break the cycle for me, simply because its free, I'll just keep in the loot as more of a casual player when Mists comes out.

I really doubt that GW2 will break this cycle not because it is a bad game but because this is how we gamers are today. There are just too many MMOS to choose from. I remember when all i had was either UO or EQ....

Not to mention that gamers have become really jaded over the years and turned into a really really tough crowd to please.

I've done the same, and have similar concerns.  Heh, guess we'll see image

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Why worry about this, even a few weeks of fun is worth 50 euro..

Enjoy a game as long as its last and then move on, ...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

It's hard to tell 2-3 months down the road how I feel about the game.

I haven't had this much fun in the beta for many many years, so It's a good sign, but who know one day I might just log in and ask myself, why? then just log out again.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

I also avoided the BWEs, except for the first one, primarily to keep things fresh,  but I doubt the content in the first 10 levels compares to the rest of the game. I wanted to get a feel for it to see if it would be something I wanted to pursue.

I think it's a bit of both, games have changed and veteran online gamers have changed. I definitely have changed, now I look at features and analyze the games to see what the developers felt should be in there. I can also turn that off and just play a game to play it, but glaring issues such as B2P games like Galaxy Life on the iphone disappoint me, and primarily because I feel some of those games have solid core mechanics, graphics, and are just in general good games but then they are ruined by alienating people who don't want to spend money.

A little off topic, but the point is that I think it is a bit of both, and the older gamers see more of the scams, gimicks or the time sinks, and being that the gaming community is ruthless, there is no second thought to voicing their dissent.

And you know, that might not be it at all, maybe those gimmicks are just boring additions and gamers don't like boring things... And developers had to put them in there because they ran out of time.

I kind of feel like video games, online or off are like music, and according to Gram Parsons, "It's music. Either it's good or it's bad; either you like it or you don't."

People just expect too much of mmo's, even if it's a game desinged to be a long lasting experience you still can't expect it to last you for years, it's not possible to make a game that will never become stale if you play it everyday for an hour or every other day for 2 or 3 hours, and if you play even more often than you can forget about fun completely. It's not about the wrong design, wrong ideas or anything alike, its simply the gameplay that will become stale. Its like this with everything, smoking is fun at first but later it becomes a habit and when you think about it you dont even enjoy it anymore, same with drinking and such, and I know its not the a good comparison but it gets the point across. For the money you are paying you should be happy if it lasts you a month even. Worth it in my opinion.

Tell that to the guys that played a single mmorpg for like 10 years.

the only two major games I couldn't tell if they were crap from beta were Aion and AoC, both were more of an early acces than beta so that might explain it =P basically it was the amount of time. Gonna list the time in game it took me to know the game was crap or not worth it.

Rift-2 beta weekends, in all honesty its an ok game, wasnt for me and I think they paved the way along with Warhammer for DEs in GW2 and I thank them for that.

SWTOR-15-20 minutes of actual gameplay. I have played a F2P alpha longer than this pile of poo =P

TSW-small annoyances during the first day of gameplay but downright amazed at the level of laziness in creating the game when I created the two other factions. FYI I was an early beta member and played several beta events as long as I could stomach it.

Tera-1.5 days. Also I am from a grindfest gamer background so this either hindered my decision or helped it.. you decide.

GW2- 3 BWEs and several stress tests and I am still extremely excited and love the gameplay.. of course it isnt perfect, what game could be perfect for everyone, but it goes above and beyond anything out there now and on the near radar. ArchAge will be like this for sandbox and I am very excited for that crowd.

Hmmm can you name me one video game that kept your enthusiasm at the same level throughout its shelflife?

    Serious question.

    1)  Game cannot be "hype" due to previous successful launch - see GW1.

    2)  Suggest you look up definition of hype.

I might have fun with gW2 for a few months. then I might get bored of it. And? Big deal i will wait for something else. Why mmo players threat mmos like getting married. no, we do not have to play the same game till the end of our lives!

I pre-ordered GW2 as well, and I did peek in the BWE's and one of the stress-tests (the other one was the middle of the night for EU). I did like what I see, but like Deathstrike2, I don't want to spoil too much for myself. Max I hit was level 5 or 6 (didn't really leave Divinity Reach's area) and I liked what I saw so far. Now for me it's tie to wait for the end of the month and enjoy all the content as completely new.

And yeah, I hope GW2 will break the cycle as well and I think it might do so in some degree...

With today's divorce rate, technically they treat it as something more serious than most people treat getting married...

I think, though, the answer to your question is the subscription fees.   Paying subscription fees on top of box price makes MMOs very expensive, over time.  Then you have the large time investment.  After all of the monetary investment and the time investment, they expect something long term out of it because of what they have put into it.

I mean, if you put a few hundred dollars and a few hundred hours into a game and then simply didn't play anymore, you might feel like "oh man, i wasted all that time and money!" and get upset about it.

I don't view it that way, as I consider the time and money spent as recreation and it's not a loss as long as I had fun.  But some people take their recreation a lot more seriously than I do, particularly in the MMO scene.   GW2s design seems to try and reprogram people from the mindset of thinking of their MMOs as "effort spent" and instead view at as "having fun", so here's hoping they succeed.

It's Buy to play. if you don't like it it give it to a friend or family member. Hell, even wait a few months try it again. I went into the last BWE being very skeptical. Well, I spent tthe entire time in WvW and running around doing dynamic quest. was a total blast and I hate themeparks. it's been a long time for me since (vanilla Wow) I was excited about a themepark MMO.

Makes me wonder why buy to play model is not the wave of the future instead of freemium which is a shit model. subs are dying unless your blizzard and soon they will start looking at it i imagine. but haters like me or you just need to walk away or try it. I did and i'm hooked. but still waiting on archeage and the repopulation, but this will be something to keep me busy for sure.

Well, it's going to be easy to get bored in GW2.  Just like many other games released over the last few years.  Get to max level, then just regurgitate developer created content until you're bored.  Areanet don't care though, it's not like they have to keep you paying for a sub fee like most other games.

Wvw and sPvP tournies will keep me plenty busy after I 100% every zone in the game... yeah, that's worth 60 bucks and maybe 10-20 in gems for dyes and bag/bank space.

To the OP....your one redeeming quality of this game will be it is f2p. In my expert opinion thats the biggest draw for continued log ins by people months down the road even after they're board with features we have all seen already. GW2 is going to have a very similar release and post release as RIFT however due to the f2p it will fare a little better. You can see the desperation of MMO players by how aggressively they hype GW2. Its really only just an OK game. I've played it and many other games, I've successfully predicted the outcome of almost every MMO i've cared enough about to critique and GW2 is a hype machine at best.

The days of playing 1 MMO for years at a time are over.  Just accept it and enjoy yourself.

I'm not saying that's a good thing, just being real.
