EverQuest II: Splitpaw Saga Review

James Pittiglio offers his critical look at EverQuest II's "Splitpaw Saga" adventure pack. This add-on was made available approximately three months ago for a small fee. It is not a full expansion, and these differences are considered in the review.

imageReleased nearly three months ago, The Splitpaw Saga is Sony Online Entertainment's second adventure pack for EverQuest II. Since that initial launch, several nasty bugs have been sorted – including one particularly nasty bug that would cause an entire 'zone' to crash – to go along with some minor general changes.

It is important that one understands an adventure pack is not the same as an expansion pack. Adventure packs introduce a decent amount of content, with some new gameplay elements, for a nominal charge. Thus, players are never really 'forced' into buying these adventure packs, as the core gameplay and zones are more than sufficient to level a character throughout their entire career and satiate the thirst for content for most players. Adventure packs give a player more options, with new storylines and new content. They keep things fresh. With that said, let us look at what players get with this adventure pack.

This was an absolutely fantastic expansion pack. Tons of unique content.

the review was pretty vague when it came to actual content. Where do you recieve quests? What kind of quests are they? What are the quest rewards?

Anyway, looking at the pictures almost sent me into chronic depression. I dont think they could have made the enviorments look more bland and boring if they so tried to. Or maybe they did, hmm.

Great review.  I thought the solo quests and zones were really fun for a while.  It was quiet a challenge at first with the monsters mimic player classes such as templer or guardian.

Im wondering if the reviewer went inside the solo arena?  Lets not overlook this feature of this adventure pack.  The champion inside the arena is unsoloable for some classes.  This monster was on the list as one of the highest monster to kill players.  Probably the only thing that is negative about this adventure pack.

My own rating would put this at 6 out of 10 solely because of the arena.

Have played: CoH, DDO EQ2, FFXI, L2, HZ, SoR, and WW2 online

I don't understand this.  They are basically charging people for more contents that should have been free??  Is this another way to milk the people of more money??

I know MMO games change and evolve but to charge people for adding little of content that in my opinion should have been free just doesn't sit well with me.  Eight bucks doesn't sound much but it is the principle that everytime they add anything, they will charge people.  What the hell is our monthly fee for?

The adventure packs are simply extra content which you can purchase or opt not to if you don't like it. What they are is like mini-expansions; if you like them you can purchase them, and they are very cheap. If you don't like it you don't have to buy it and it doesn't affect the original game whatsoever. Period.

They don't charge you anytime they add anything, so the sky isn't falling. They update the game constantly and maintain the servers. They just revamped the entire combat system, which rocks btw, and that was added with no fee. They have added thousands of new quests since launch which were regular updates also. They also added dueling and numerous additions to the UI, as well as guild and gameplay enhancements. That's what your monthly fee is for.image

Also, great review James! Can't wait to hit level 20.image

Remember that you have to see things in motion to get the true glory of EQ2's graphics. If you want something a little more colorful you could try Banjo Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot or World of Warcraft.image

HAHA - The Difference between an addon and full expansion is that the addon is more likely to have more bugs but you pay less for them - Nice.
