I would re-post this on the other thread "WOW strikes first". They are discussing this very subect in light to GW2's release and it is seeign much more traffic :-)

No surprise on the date, saw it coming a mile.

What would be interesting is if ArenaNet pull a double whammy and release the first major content patch for GW2 on the 25th of September. Not really sure why Blizzard are trying to compete with a b2p game anyway, how can you compete when you're not fighting over subs?

i wonder what features they stole this time from others games for this expansion xD :P

You haven't been paying much attention if you missed WoW's version of Pokemon.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Who says they are?  MoP release date was published before GW2 release date was known.  They are applying the pre-expansion patch 1 month before expansion release date.  Obviously timed perfectly for a B2p game and not their own company strategy that has been proven over years of releases.....

If gw 2 succeeds i dont see wow going far away.

The problem is that every new mmo that  comes out is just descent. Not bad but not superb as well.

    AOE looting from RiFT/SWTOR

Challenge mode dungeons = RiFT (although RiFT is way more advanced with leader boards)

    Scenarios = RiFT/LOTRO

It's no biggie though as its industry standard to take ideas from your competitors.

OMG!!! Could this be a good indication of GW2 being the true chosen WOW KILLER!!!!

    Forbes seems to think so...

    snip

Not ture, GW2 was announced on the 28th of June while MoP was announced on the 25th of July.

This is clearly a strategic move by Blizzard, I knew the pre MoP patch would be around the GW2 launch because of the history of past expansions and the 1 month pre patch timing. They didn't need to make it on the exact day GW2 launched but they did ^-^

There's actually a surprising amount of good in this expansion, but WoW is getting old. There's no denying that. Still, it's a really excellent slew of content for its fans. I'll be checking it out.

About half of my guild has decided not to pick up gw2 because of these news. It may end up hurting gw2 quite a lot. Me, I'm dead set on spending at least one month inTyria.

So we get the D3 patch, wow patch and guild wars 2... The gaming gods are being kind..

A surprisingly excellent slew of rehashed content that you've completed in every other expansion...

The single worthwhile addition is the Monk, I've been in beta for months and it is the only thing I've found that would make the expansion worth a purchase. They really have done a great job with the class.

    Pokemon battles? Naga please.

New raids? Same old same old with a flashy new skin.

Class changes? Not exactly something everyone is looking forward to, as most classes have been dumbed down even further than they were with Cata.

Talent changes? Same story as class changes.

Don't even get me started on the whole Alliance vs Horde scenario, if you were hoping that MoP brings the "war" back to warcraft, think again.

What do you mean "not fighting over subs" ? Ofcourse they are fighting over subs, if a WoW player thinks GW2 is better and swaps over to GW2 they have no need to keep WoW sub running, they cancel it, Blizz loses money. So they release a big patch at GW2 launch day trying to keep their customers away from GW2 and subbed to WoW.

I never understood the logic behind different payment methods not being in direct competition with each others. They are always in competition, for subs, for cash shop purchases, for time-spent by players in game / for active players.

New content for sure, but in my opinion, Blizzard went too far with this patch.  The revamped talents and skills was too radical.  You should write an article on that. :p

You make a good point.  They are fighting for player's time, not really subs.  The more time a player spends in their games, the more money they make.
