I miss those days sometimes, the trolling seemed to occur less back in the day or rather we weren't as jaded
I've been posting and reading usenet and modern forums since the late 90's and it was exactly the same back then.

Well my observation wasn't the net as a whole but rather focused on MMORPG. I dunno maybe I just payed less attention to the trolling back then? Although it could be said that when we were much more niche back then, there were mostly MMO enthusiasts amongst us?

It was there you just didn't know what it was. Everquest dumbed down UO and killed what MMO's were meant to be, WoW dumbed down EQ, SWG was the best game eva, SWG was the worse game eva etc etc... you were young and full of optimism and life the world was a big wonderful place to discover not a cynical old git worrying about first world problems.

Originally posted by J2Khouri I also noticed the words "Sandbox" and "themepark" didnt seem to exist back then.
Thats because the MMO world was a Sandbox world. In my opinion WoW introduced the first linear MMO and in essence the themepark sub-genre. It is why I have for as long as I can remember split the two sub-genres into very narrow definitions. Linear equals themepark, open world equals sandbox. Its really that simple.
Playing: GW2 Waiting on: TESO Next Flop: Planetside 2 Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.

I actually have more optimism for the genre and gaming in general as I get older. I'm able to approach the genre with a much more objective mind and I think that is what has helped me appreciate it more. Although I do see what you describe in others as they age.
Yeah, but it changed in mid development. It was originally supposed to be a great Sandbox with a lot of really great ideas. The Dragon you could play would perma-die, and it's body parts would be extremely valuable, and you started out young and would grow over a long period of time. There were other special races like this too, Angels and Demons, Sphinx, I forget what else. You could only have one of any of these special races, and they all could suffer perma-death. All the standard races too, plus 2 competing underwater races.
And the standard races would have special bonuses for their environment too. For example, the Slith (lizard race of the great deserts) could run faster on the desert sands than others. The cat people who lived in forests had some special benefit too. This was to give them each an advantage in their own terrain so as to fight off PvP attacks better, make more sense.
Construction and resource area control, along with a justice system for PKers, was to give players plenty of reason to not turn the game into a rabbid free-for-all (a la Eve in some ways).
As maxed in Sandbox as could be made.
The boards were very active with thousands of active followers from the start.
And NCSoft was going to put something like 2 million into it to get to the next stage, where they'd seek more funding.
But then the number 2 guy in the company forced the number 1 guy out in a board of directors coup. NCsoft quickly cancelled their funding, and the game was turned into a semi Themepark style with casual players running loads of Dragons that never died, just like any other character. Once all the followers realized what changes were being done, they almost all left (me included).

The term themepark didn't exist until fanboys needed to invent a politically correct term for "WoW clone". And thus, a genre where each game is 96% the same as WoW, was born. And all games that aren't WoW are called sandboxes for some reason. Even DAoC and EQ.
Yeah that was back in the day before gangs of predorder players would come on here trolling to defend and advertise the game they had already paid for. {sniff} I am a bit misty eyed here.

Yeah they are funny here's my first post...enjoy

This new trend is turning me off
Why is Wow and Guild Wars getting smacked with sooooo much trash talk, Wow is a nice game I finally played it and I liked it, Guild Wars is a great game for what it is( and yes it's not a game for everyone), SWG was very fun as well until SOE did what they did, UO got to old school (but I enjoyed it as well), and EQ got whatever it got to turn people away from it, and DAoC was fun for a time also.
Theres going to be mmo's for all kinds of people for all kinds of reason's, bitching and complaining about who's doing what to what game is childish. I play GW alot (but why you dont like it doesn't matter to me or anyone else) just like those who play Wow your opinion of how bad or terrible it is doesn't matter, but here's alittle news flash the game that you people are waiting for will never be made in your life time. if this genre is still around 100 year's from now. so get over it, go back to one you already own or buy a new one or don't play these games anymore and be quiet, dev's and publishers are going to do what they want with or without your opinion or your permishing.
This is real life------you have no control of what the gaming industry is going to do with or without you.
Evil will always triumph because good is dumb....
Fending off the trolls like a boss. Nice lol.
Interesting, a lot of talk about "Horizons"
I had never even heard of that game but back then it seemed like there was some buzz about it.
Give it a go its still going under the name of Istaria you can play a dragon if you want thats what most of the population do anyway.

Whats interesting to see is how differently free to play was treated back before WoW ~

Once upon a time....
I don't know if it was on here, but I remember a post from years ago...
The post was about RF online. You know in this game isn't auto-attack
"This game sucks, not point and click = not fun."
Thinking about it now so funny.... people actually wanted point and click back then..
Lol some good ones. Thanks for point it out. I didn't even notice the Last link.
Like...
"Isometric" MMORPGs
Free EQ server? response- lol yeah right
World of Warcraft or Diablo 3
"I'm holding onto Blizzard to bring back that loving feeling. World of Warcraft looks great. I just hope it's not going to be another EQ/DAoC clone."
No such thing as WoW clones. Its EQ/DAoC clones!
Only the names of the games have changed, everything else is exactly the same.
