In what way is the thief underpowered?

kDeviLkDeviL Member UncommonPosts: 215
I played a thief in bwe1 and completely loved how strong it was in sPvP.  After that I stuck mostly to WvW on a warrior.  One thing I kept hearing was how bad the thief was in PvP after some huge nerf or whatever.  I'm really confused because today I was running sPvP the whole time with (almost) the same build that I had in bwe1 great if not better.

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?

thief is amazing who said its underpowered?

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

people were probably trying to go toe to toe with a warrior or guardian, not zipping in and out of combat.

    It's not.

However, when has that ever stopped people from whinning? =/

The only real issue thieves have, is that in some ways they are less versatile than other classes. Also, if you don't spec for it, initiative can be a problem, as it's really easy to burn through it and then be stuck rather gimped for a while. However, all of these 'issues' can be worked around by any decent player capable of thinking for themselves.

This was my first stress test playing Gw2 ever. I rolled a thief, ranger, necro. The thief was by far the best class i played. I was in love with the thief as soon as I switched it's traits/talents up a little. Didn't do to much WvWvW because honestly I was lvl2. Instead I spent all my time in structured pvp. The thing I realized about the thief was you have to be in and out ALOT!!!!! My friends scammed me though grouping with me before we went in, and then letting me know they could see me the whole time as they kept beating me. THey let me know at the end..... FUCKERS

I like the thief.  It is the only class that has a completely different mechanic.  None of your skills have a cool down, but they cost initiative and you only have so much. All other classes have skills with cool downs.  A thief with full initiative is a dangerous foe. A thief with none is weak.  It is a fine line for anet to balance initiative regen rate.

The thing about the thief is that in order for it to truly shine, the player needs to invest significantly deep into a couple of traits. Before that, it's very easy to run out of initiative. In other words, it's a bit of a rough leveler, especially in WvW.

Also the steal skill is nothing more than a glorified shadowstep which makes it virtually useless for a thief who prefers to stay out of melee range (short bow/dual pistol). While other classes have F1-F4 abilities that are useful for range and melee, thief's is only really useful for melee.

Those are my gripes with the thief otherwise It's a pretty fun once you trait it properly.

It's such a fun class in both pve and pvp. I truly love playing my thief!

It's because, during the first BWE, the thief was very strong with its signets build. You had passive initiative regeneration, +runspeed, might, etc. basically a total of 4 passive buffs, and 4 cooldowns that you could pretty much spam and make yourself near invincible.

This did need to be nerfed, but they nerfed it way too hard, they completely removed all but 1 signet talent trait for the thief, when before there were 7-8.

Nowadays, you have to do venoms(poisons) to be successful, until people have enough time to theorycraft a viable Sword+Dagger build.

Shortbows are also awesome by the way, if you haven't tried it yet and happen to have great timing, split the bomb right above the target and you get 4 explosions in a 3 foot radius.

EDIT:::Also, in melee with any kind of boss in PvE you're screwed as a thief. The bosses are currently balanced towards the sturdier melee classes (war, guard) and therefore aren't balanced to give ANY leeway to a melee thief. Just wanted to let you know that in PvE, you're going to either die A LOT or go ranged.
