GW2 client STILL being blocked by AVG firewall

stragen001stragen001 Member UncommonPosts: 1,720

Just before the first BWE I had trouble getting my GW2 client to download and eventually found a workaround. Then, when the BWE started, I found that the AVG firewall was blocking the GW2 login servers.

If I turned off AVG firewall all was well.

Since there were several posts about it on the AVG forums, and it was regularly included in their weekly bulletins, I figured that the issue would be resolved by the time launch came around. It is now a week before launch, and on the last stress test AVG firewall was still blocking access to the GW2 login servers.

Has anyone else had this problem and knows of a workaround, without turning the AVG firewall off, or is there any official word for AVG or Anet that this will be fixed for launch?

    Just open following _destination_ports_: 80, 443, 6112, 6600

Advanced firewall settings, System services, User Settings or something like this.

    Just add a new rule:

    Protocol TCP,

    Output,

Local port - everything (from 0 to 65535),

    Remote port 80,443,6112,6600,

    Remote addr all networks,

    Allow all.

P.S.: should be ok with adding just 6112 and 6600 of course.

though some ppl mess their https settings somehow... just a precaution lol.

Erm, that seems like a really bad idea. Basically stopping the firewall scanning those ports? And 80 is http and 443 is https.... I would want my firewall to be scanning these for threats!

Is this an official solution approved by AVG or ANet, or just a workaround you have discovered?

I don't know about AVG but personally never used any firewalls since my router is loaded with DD-wrt, but recently I been using microsoft one just for the hell of it, never had any issues.

I also  experienced this problem  with the avg  firewall.   I hope  that there is a good answer on this  soon.

Man you asked for what? A solution? You has it now.

If you think thats a bad idea - go ahead and turn it off completly.

I don't want to argue with a low educated (in computer science) person about how firewalls work, sorry.

But they are not scanning the whole internet for sure like you believe.

Why not save your self the hassle of having a software firewall and get a router with a built in firewall they work way better anyway?

Also AVG is not a good firewall.  I would use something better which would also solve this problem.

Also you could learn how to use a firewall and create a rule that allows GW2 to work.  I know crazy to think that you might have to do some work.

PS - We live in the information age, if you cannot take 30 minutes to google how to create a rule on your firewall than you deserve not being able to play games with your firewall on.

Erindal's response is the Anet response (it is stickied on their forums, albeit, they off-line ATM).  Regarding opening specific ports in the firewall, this is pretty common in my experience with games (required for WoW and Rift for example regardless of firewall software being used).  I kinda view a firewall like a bullet-proof vest...doesn't do a damned thing if someone is really out to get you.

This is the best thing you can do, this will help you manage everything related to networking in your home lot easier and SAFE.

Go to http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato/  check to see if your router is supported

Go to http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index check to see if your router is supported

Pick one of them that you like, install on router, remove all firewall related software. enjoy!

I have no experience with AVG firewall, but can't you just create a rule that would allow all outbound traffic for GW2 client?

How does any program requiring net connection work if you can't?

Ignoring all the idiotic responses.... this however is very useful. Thanks. Wasnt comfortable allowing 80 and 443 so I have just opened 6112 and 6600 which works fine and allows me to contact the login servers (Except for the fact "There is no beta event in progress" LOL )

I no longer use AVG but from my experience when i did and was useing online apps, every single time the software had an update i would need to allow the program past the firewall. Now i dont know about you but every time ive started GW2 ive had an update. AVG is always gonna ask for permission again when the .exe changes.

Yep did that, also wanted to remind people that adding the application in the control panel for the windows firewall helps.

I use an app called Gamebooster which i use for every game, turns off all the crap windows has running in the background before getting into games.

And finally Avast antivirus causes issues with the game, so i turned that off as well. haven't found a work around for avast yet

If anyone didn't get the signal before, now is the time... AVG firewall IS crap.

Just use the Windows 7 built in firewall.
