When did you become interested in GW2

bookworm438bookworm438 Member Posts: 647

With all the negativity in these forums lately about the most mundane things, I figured we should have a thread that's positive.

** This is not a debate of which game is better or even about the features (or concerns about the game). If you want to do that, go to one of the other thousand threads available.

So my question for everyone is when did you become interested in GW2? What drew you into GW2? Did you play GW1 at all?

For me: I've been playing GW1 since 2006 <which reminds me, I gotta log in an get b-day presents from my characters>. I don't actively play anymore, but I still log in occasionally to see what's changed. I became interested in GW2 pretty much as soon as they announced it back in 2007. I still remember the PCGamer article on GW2 back in 2007. I think the fact that it's based off of GW1 lore (still cant wait to go around and see what's similar to GW1 still), but as more of an MMO (with features that are different from other MMOs still) drew me in.

1 slow Sunday afternoon, my buddy and I were bored out of our minds. Found out its beta weekend 3, bought and downloaded the game and was able to play couple of hours before beta weekend ended.

    In love ever since.

When they released the manifesto and I found out that GW2 wasn't going to have the ridiculousness of the Holy Trinity, their chained DE system, and no shuffling people into a raiding gear grind at max level.

Hmm, pretty much the only thing I don't like is the transmutation stone system.  Since it is painfully implemented if you want to have a lot of possible looks.

I got GW1 when it first came out. I had some fun in it but it did not really grab me. The world was empty, ie: no other players around except in the cities. I was also disappointed when I left pre-searing Ascalon and headed into the wasteland that awaited me. I did not adventure much there. I rolled a few alts and spent 95% of my time in the starter area :)

When GW2 was announced, I paid it no heed. I never followed what was going on or read anything about what the game was going to be like. I "assumed" it would be a continuation of GW1 and never looked further.

One day, while surfing the boards here, I noticed BadSpock had written a review about the game. I decided to go see what he had to say. I found it very different from what I had expected. I started looking more deeply into it. I was not sold right off the bat. I am still unsure if I will get into it like I hope to. Only time will tell :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I got GW1 in 2008 and that's when I heard about GW2. I've been waiting for it since then.

I played GW1 when it was first released but never really could get into it. I got interested in GW2 when the manifesto video was first released.

My interest in Guild Wars 2 started when I watched Arenanet's MMO Manifesto, since then I was curious if they could pull it off or not.

I haven been looking forward to it since they released their manifesto video.

I got in to GW1 after that, because it fit what I was looking for at the time:

    - I was looking for a no grind mmo.

    - I was looking for a no sub mmo.

    - I was looking for a balanced CS.

    - Superb polish, balance and quality present.

Because of these reasons the only game that kept coming up was GW1 and it sure delivered, been hooked to both games ever since, the only thing I didn't like at first was the no jumping present but to be honest that doesn't bother me anymore.

even GW1 is completely different from the crop, you have to pay attention to the mobs you're fighting because if there is a healer in the group you will never kill them, target prioritizing is important for your very survival.

I've tried a bazillion other mmo's and none can compare to these 2 games, I've now stopped trying other mmo's completely and only exclusively play Guild Wars 1 & 2.

I read this forums for a while in search for good mmo, but it was only annoying and information here were so subjective, many times exaggerated, or simply false, nothing drew my attention.

But then, I watched movie clip on youtube which showed skills of all classes, and that really impressed me, so I started to watch more videos and interviews.

So, haven't played betas, got hyped up only by beta videos, about two weeks ago, and now I'm buying it. I'm happy I didn't have to wait years for this, cause that would be painful experience xd

When it was announced 5 years ago ... I don't think you realise how excited I am for this game
  • ariboersmaariboersma Member Posts: 1,802

I think it was Oct/Nov ish of last year, I had just been disappointed by what I was seeing of Tera, after I had been disappointed by what I saw of SWTOR when I heard about the game.. I started coming here and reading up on it and was as excited if not more than I was for TSW which I had been following for over a year at that time. Time warp forward TSW beta makes me sick its so bad and im left with GW2 but by then I had seen so much I was hooked and now I have played it several times and think its the best choice for me and those in my gaming circle of friends.

Everyone is so excited save a few still stuck in WOW.

as for GW1, I knew about it, heard bad things about it and never thought about trying it until HoM rewards were announced.. lets just say I really enjoyed getting my 33 pts and helping a few friends get their 30 points!

The manifesto video did it for me. The "if you hate MMOs, you'll really wanna check out GW2" part :)

The gamescom 2010 2 hour video with no commentary.  Just a gamer playing the game.  With game sound and all.  Was fantastic to watch.  Nothing being sold to me but the actual gameplay and I was hooked.

Before that though, I was very wary about the game as I had been disappointed with GW1 back at it's launch, thinking it would be an open world persistent MMO, which it wasn't.  GW2 has become what I wanted GW1 to be.

Once I saw "The Manifesto," I was pretty well hooked.  After that I watched every video on GW2 that I could find, from interviews to gameplay vids....whatever I could find.

I became interested when I first watched Anet's MMO Manifesto probably back in early 2009.  I kept tabs on the game's blog for a while and it quicly became clear that I agreed with almost all of their design philosophies.  I constantly debate the merits and inadequacies of various games' designs and features among friends and have subsequently formulated a pretty good idea of what my ideal MMO would look like--or what kind of MMO I myself would make if I were in the position to do so.  GW2 has very nearly matched my ideal game every step of the way.

    1) BWE2

    2) Yes... hated it due to the UI

A MMO is like life. It is something to cherish and enjoy upon in it journey. So why race to the end of it. In life at the end you die.

I played the first iteration of Guild Wars to the max and beyond.  Never nabbed the sequels but I did get EOTN.  I just loved  how ANet did it and have looked forward to GW2 since it was announced.
