Base on google and some youtube video, my assumption is gold isn't very useful. So there's no desire for people to buy gold. The only huge gold sink is buying influence. Which is only temporary and the buff isn't enough to warrent the need.
Does that mean people won't buy gold? and conclusion is the gem price will sky rocket? since very few will sell it for gold, but there's many demand for it to buy say bag slot etc.

poeple differ from one person to the next.
I won't buy gold because it's a waste when i can just sell gems on auction house for gold. However somone thats idk rash or has the money to trow around might want specific items and gems all threw the game, and that person willing to shell out money for it will do it either way on any and every game they can.
I've seen gold sellers since 2002 ...somebody buys gold and power levelling services for sure
Do you really need to ask? of coarse.
People will trade both ways. Some will want gems without spending RL money and others will want extra gold and dont mind spending a few bucks.
Seems to be working as intended.
Gold is the currency of the auction house. It will be extremely useful. And yes, people will buy gold for cash...or gems if you prefer...but it's really cash . And yes, this will be considered P2W by many people.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Absolutely. the trading post uses gold. Alot of crafters will supplement their materials using gems>gold>materials.
WvWvW siege equipment isnt cheap either.
Yeah some will. They always do. Even in mmos that have you scratching your head as to why the fuck they would bother. Many of the recent mmos don't need one to even consider buying gold. Yet the farmers/spammers still make a killing.
Don't underestimate the need for some to want to fast track it and have bragging rights.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
The OP is talking about the gems for gold exchange, not illegal gold selling.
Will people trade gems for gold? Sure. How much of a trade will there be? I don't know.
If the opening exchange rate is similar to BWE3, I will trade 50-100 gems for silver right from the start, in order to buy weapons for unlocking weapon skills, gathering tools and Basic Salvage kits. Beyond that? Well, I'm not sure. I might buy more to fund some early crafting gains, but crafting aside, I didn't see the need to trade gems for gold for most of the early leveling process.
I think crafting and early WvW are the most likely optional, first week gold sinks that may fuel some gem for gold trading. Guild influence is another. Mid- to long term? I think it remains to be seen.
Pricing is controlled by Arenanet, based on supply/demand, but still determined by their full time professional economist. You don't select a price to sell at. They will adjust the prices to try to maximize gem sales, while also keeping inflation in check.

seeing how the set I want at level 80 = 120 gold EACH PIECE, I'll probably end up buying gold.
Why? Because I lose gold when I play WvW and buy blue prints and fix my armor and so ya at level 40 I was BROKE!!!! so I can't imagine being that much richer come level 80 and I wanna look like a BOSS!!!! oooh yaa *shines his nails*
Also there will probably be items I need for my Legendary Equipement which I might not want to go get and I might need extra gold to buy them off the AH.
So yes I most likely plan on using GEMS to buy gold to be Pay 2 Win cause for me looking cool = WINNING

Oh wow their cash shop sells ingame currency? How cute is that?
Call me old fashioned but that's the last nail in the coffin for me.
No lol, it's just that you can marketplace gems you buy with irl money on the marketplace for people who can't afford it. That's how I see it anyway.
I'm really sorry to hear that ...it would have been a real slice to have you aboard...on the other hand this has been discussed at least a 100 times in the last 6 months and I'm surprise such a knowledgeable individual wouldn't have known this before they started posting in the GW2 forums

The cash shop does not sell ingame currency.
The game facilitates the trade of gold earned ingame by players for gems (cash shop currency) through the auction house function.
That's a huge distinction, which is apparently lost on many people.
Basically, it kills the illegal gold farming market without changing the amount of currency in the economy, or creating inflation.
The cash shop does not sell gear (power) at all.
On topic: yeah, people will sell gems, it might not be for a price I would consider reasonable, but then I have nothing agianst just buying the couple character slots, outfits and bank expansions that I plan to eventually with real money if the exchange rate isn't favorable. Then again, I might have plenty of gold laying around to buy that stuff by the time I max my first five alts......
Yes i do think people will buy gold, and it is a reason (athough not the only reason) why I am staying away from the game.
Gold usage:
1. Buying anything and everything from auction house.
2. Buying crafing supplies from npcs (not all craft mats are drops/gather, things like thread and runes are NPC only)
3. Reparing gear
4. Buying fashion gear, the highest I've seen so far being 10 gold per piece.
5. Trait manuals
6. Lots of other stuff.
Gold, like karma, is something people are underestimating right now. You can never, and will never, have enough of either.
"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."
You must be really old fashioned because all mmos have had this service provided by farmers and botters since the start.
The moment buying gold is required is the moment the game get's uninstalled forver.
Just sayin
Well, I think gold sellers won't like it and if more of them don't play the game as a result, that will be fine by me. If we lose a few people who prefer to pretend people in their games aren't buying gold, well, that's fine to. A shame for them though, in a genre with so few stand outs to miss one of the most outstanding in some time for such a reason.

If in 1982 we played with the current mentality, we would have burned down all the pac man games since the red ghost was clearly OP. Instead we just got better at the game.
