    sadly enough, probrably wurm.

We need a competent dev team with solid funding to release a high qualitity true sandbox. None of the hybrid crap cuts it.

At first I thought this was a trick question, but maybe there is an answer...

its a tie really, between darkfall and mortal online.

sadly, they are also tied for worst fantasy sandbox mmo out there.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

DFO is a hybrid, not a full blown sandbox.

    WURM Online

It's just a shame that playing that game is literally a full time job if you want to have anything worth talking about. I LOVE the concept, but it's just much much too time consuming.

You could give Vanguard a try as it is free to play now and has inworld housing, shipbuilding, deep crafting, harvesting, a seamless world, diplomacy like a trading card game.

But i do not believe the game will recover from its doom of a very bad release and the ever low playerbase with almost no significant development from SOE.

A real good sandbox mmo that is state of the art is not online at this days.

There really is no "best" among fantasy sandboxes right now. Eve is the most populated. Darkfall is probably the most modern and maybe populated fantasy sandbox. I personally think Ryzom or Mabinogi offer a better PvE experience than Darkfall though.

There's some thread with a list of sandboxes a couple pages down. You could look there.

Off topic, but how many players does Darkfall have right now?

Eve Online isn't even remotely a fantasy game. However, I fully agree that both Ryzom and Mabinogi are fantastic.

Darkfall for PvP, Vanguard for PvE.
