Guild Wars 2 lore is extremely complex...

interview/Q&A with the head lore/continuity designer for guild wars 2. she talks about how much effort they put into creating the backstory of guild wars 2, making it seamless with the guild wars 1 history, and even the two guild wars 2 books that came out. when they redesigned the sylvari they made sure to talk to the novel writers to ensure that the changes were reflected in the books as well. impacts in the story from the novels and in guild wars 1 are felt in guild wars 2 personal story, DE's, and dungeons. She is actually writing the 3rd installment for the guild wars 2 novel series which should be done by the end of the year.

I haven't been this excited about lore since the first time i discovered star wars 15 yrs ago.

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

Yeah, the lore is not only expansive, but about as well conceived as any I've experienced in any fantasy game. People who want to take the time to track down every bit of lore, talking to every NPC they can find, are going to have a long process of discovery ahead of them.

You don't have to talk to NPCs to get quests or figure out what to do next, but there are a lot of NPCs with interesting conversation trees for those who want to know more about what's going on in the world and how the inhabitants perceive the events that are ongoing.

I really have to give Arenanet credit for fleshing out details that may only be sought out by a small percentage of the gaming population. The cohesive lore tends to benefit the immersive design of the game world even for those you never bother to read the available text.

Nice post! And I definitely concur.

I'm not usually a lore buff, but upon taking a 2nd look at GW1 I was thuroughly impressed. The original game didn't exactly start out w/ a ton of lore. It had enough, but was hardly the most expansive game I'd seen at the time. However, what they did do was leave themselves a lot of room to expand upon what they created. Given the ~7 years or so that they've had, they have definitely utilized that time to expand upon what they already had. It's fairly impressive that they not only kept track of what they already wrote, but have also built upon it and kept it consistant with GW2.

I just wish he would continue the series. :/

If you're interested in learning more about GW / GW2 lore, check out Wooden Potatoes. His channel is ongoing, and he's a huge lore buff of GW 1 & 2. His videos aren't structured in the same way, but every video is basically on a certain aspect of one of the games. For example, he has a video on him doing one of the meta events in the plains of ashford area in GW2. While playing through it, he explains what's going on, and what the lore significance of it all is. He also has videos about certain world locations, characters, gods, dragons, etc. It's really all quite impressive.

The four links in the initial post ARE from WoodenPotatoes.   The comment you replied to is referencing the fact that he has not yet finished the Lore series he started with those four videos.   I agree with those who have said they wish he would finish them.  So do I!

His channel is great, pretty much I have watched all of his GW2 videos.   I don't think I have seen him mention regarding why he hasn't finished that Lore series.

I prefer Ree's new haircut and color, it makes her look younger than in this video.

Also, it was so cute when she announced she was gonna write the 3rd novel haha

Thank you for the links. These were very helpful :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

what made gw1 satisfying was finding hidden villages or hard to find towns that revealed or expanded on the lore through their scenery as well as the random npcs that would just spout some seemingly meaningless banter.

I don't know about anyone else, but after watching the video that was linked in the original post one of the things i added to my to-do list when playing is to look for  Killeen's grave.  I think it's so awesome that it is somewhere in game and that potentially you could even run into one of the other characters from the novel visiting it.

    Ah, my apologies didn't realize.

In that case, he actually has mentioned why he hasn't done more of those. I'll see if I can find the exact video (it's one of the newer ones), but he basically mentions that with everything going on w/ GW2 around the corner, and the amount of videos he's had to sift through, he just hasn't had time to continue it.

He also mentioned that the series isn't finished, but rather he is going to wait until after the game launches to continue it.

Oh! Awesome, I must have just missed it when he talked about it.  Good to know he does plan to finish eventually.  I thought he   just stopped wanting to do it or something and was a little disapointed on the lack of any information or update from him.

Now I know I just need to be patient.

I knew about Wooden Potatoes stuff but never watched it till now. Those videos are really well done, very professional.

About the lore, yeah I really like the lore of guild wars. I actually think it is very underrated. What I especially like about it is how you learn all of this while in game.

    Killeen > Caithe.

Caithe is just your usual lesbian thief, she feels so bland compared to Kileen, which has such a creative and fun personality

I think that caithe was bland because ghosts of ascalon was a well written book and destinies edge was shallow on character development. More of an author thing than anything else

I agree completely.  I fell in love with Killeen when reading The Ghosts of Ascalon and was heartbroken when she died.  I will definitely be looking for her grave to pay my respects in game.

I hope to run into more Sylvari like her!

I suggest reading the books, the're pretty good. Even though the first one(Ghosts of Ascalon) is better, the second one is much more important as its about the overarching story and I really liked the ending.

This is why i like the Guild Wars & Warcraft series.  Their lore is pretty good.  I just couldn't get into Rift's lore, or lore from other MMOs.
